GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

I just got my GH4 last week and I'm incredibly excited about this upcoming "surprise". Seriously though what are the chances that they can enable 10bit internal recording? Are the UHS3 cards able to handle that? That and a log profile would push it to 11 for me.

The UHS3 cards don't care if it's 8,10 or 12bit. They only care what the data rate is.

Yes it does.

comparable to this.

8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 95 MB per/sec, or 334 GB per/hr.
10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 127 MB per/sec, or 445 GB per/hr.

I'm not a camera engineer, but I work in a large post production house in colour grading support, so vaguely know what I'm talking about.

Panasonic currently use the h264 codec, which doesn't support higher than 8 bit.

x264 does support 10 bit and is a much more efficient codec, but requires licensing and I would assume would need a different hardware encoder....

It strikes me as odd that Panasonic would opt for only h264 8 bit 4k/1080p, when if we compare to the 5d mark III which is older, and less video focussed... presumably it has a weaker imaging processor... and via hacks can render 1920x1080 raw at 14 bit 1080p..

the BMPCC which can do 1920x1080 raw to SD cards, or 1920x1080 all flavours of prores and DEFINITELY has a weaker processor...

This surprise they have coming is I think 10bit x264 4k 100mbps, 10bit ProRes 1920x1080 up to 60fps, or 1920x1080 RAW 10bit... perhaps even a HDR mode, the camera is capable of shooting 96fps at 1080, you could get a pretty decent 24p HDR with 4 steps of exposure, or just two like magic lantern and drastically reduce the ghosting effect.

LOG is just a LUT and virtually no performance hit, can't see why they wouldn't just include it in all of the above modes i just pulled out of my ass.

Just my guesses... Sorry. I'm boozy.

h264 most certainly does support higher than 8bit. In fact, it supports up to 14bit, and x264 is just the open source library to encode using the h264 format.

Does higher bit depth = higher date rate?

Depends on the codec used. All else being equal, yes the 10bit codec will have a higher data rate compared to 8bit but there is nothing stopping them use another more efficient codec. I'm not saying they should use prores but as an example, ProRes is all 10bit but there are different flavours of ProRes with highly varying data rates.

We we know that the GH4 architecture can handle a data rate 200Mbps. Wouldn't be hard at all to squeeze a 10bit codec into that at all.

saying all that, I don't think this is the surprise. I'd love to be wrong but even the GH4s biggest competitor in terms of 'camera of the moment' is the a7s. It's 8bit only, it doesn't even output 10bit out of its HDMI port like the GH4 can so not sure why Panasonic would see the need to upgrade it.

I think it has to be either 4K 200Mbps and/or 10bit 4:2:2.

Leading up the the GH4's announcement the buzz was all about 10bit 4:2:2 and magic lantern raw from Blackmagic and Canon respectfully. Although the A7s was announced shortly after the GH4, their features are so different that I wouldn't really call them direct competitors. I think Panasonic sees Blackmagic and Canon as its main competitors and has set up the GH4 to challenge their cameras.

Remember when the specs came out for the GH4 and many people were confused as to why 4K was at 100Mbps while 1080p was at 200Mbps? I think that Panasonic plans to unlock hidden potential within the GH4 to compete with the rumored 7D Mark II announcement at Photokina.

What are the benefits of 4k 200Mbps? I don't see any large image quality differences with the 1080p 200Mbps right now, while I know the 10 bit will give more latitude for tweaking colors later on.

I would gladly take raw. For my work it would be overkill most of the time but I could definitely see myself using the extra latitude when needed.

Whoah. If they enabled RAW video recording, then why would you even need the YAGH or Shogun solution?

Because RAW recording does not give you XLR inputs, sdi's, TC output. Even now, the YAGH only gives you what you can already get out of the HDMI port......

There are plenty of people (most TV productions) that don't want to deal with RAW. Outputting to a Shogun and recording 4k in ProRes is still the best option for most productions.

stinkin $400 GoPro can do RAW (sort of), why not our GH4? :) sounds good to me. But if they accomplish RAW, surely 10bir or 422 or both could be options as well.

So if they add RAW what file format is that? Cinema DNG? I've never worked with it before.

Personally I would love ProRes to be added.

I would not like it if it was RAW, if I wanted to shoot RAW I would've got something else like a BM camera. The main reason I stuck with GH4 is because of the more compressed files that still have some latitude in post, RAW brings on a new set of headaches from storage to computer horsepower.
