If 2540p can't be used with there official compression code, then he should have said "If you shoot anything under 2540p, it would be a mistake to not shoot REDCODE". Not: "Anyone who does not shoot REDCODE is making a mistake" In general, this would mean, anyone who does not shoot REDCODE for any reason.

It's just a matter of the way he worded it.

Still though, why even offer 2540p? Thats not that much better than 4k, you can't use REDCODE compression... It's kind of like including the option to shoot 2k and 2.2k... Whats the point?
As modular device, I believe it will help for potential updates (future proof). Anyway, I second your point. Your attention is our welfare.

Well, then let me make this argument: If you can't record REDCODE in 2540p, what is the options? RAW uncompressed? To my knowledge, there a very few systems that would be able to hand such data rates. So we have the option to shoot a format which pretty much 100% of the population can't afford, If it's even possible to record RAW uncompressed 2540p data in any kind of decent frame rates, I'd be surprised. With the cost of recording RAW uncompressed 2540p data, you could easily shoot your project on 35mm film for cheaper.

So unless this 2540p option is strictly a "Wait till we get the ability to record it" thing, thats fine. But I don't think billing 2540p as a current option of recording is the right way to go about it.

Maybe I just dont follow 100%... I dunno. So for 99.9999999% of us, the sensor actually is not S35mm sized and does not actually have 12 mega pixels. More like about 35mm sized and maybe 10 mega pixels. Don't get me wrong now, thats still pretty frickin amazing for a $17,000 camera... so I'm not complaining to much.

I also don't see how this REDCODE is going to effectivly compress 4k data into 27MB/s? There has to be some MAJOR compression going on, seeing as how the actual Uncompressed RAW output 323MB/s.

Also, RED needs to update there website... According to the "Specs" Redcode is not supported in anything over 2k, yet is says 4k is available with REDCODE in the "Format" area. 2 pages on the same site tell me 2 different things.

Hi Landon,

Just a big raid! People handle uncompressed 6k and above every day, just not at home.

Dude, just because most people can't afford to shoot uncompressed 4K doesn't mean it shouldn't be developed. What if David Fincher wants to do it? He would have the resources to set up a big RAID and gett the best quality 4K out of this camera. So would James Cameron.

Me? I'll use 4K REDCODE Academy aperture cropped to 2.35:1. You know why? Because it's still a lot more detail than the freakin' Panavision Genesis!!! 35mm, S35mm, whatever. You do realize that Superman Returns was merely 1080p?

Again, they should absolutely include 2540p as an option for those that can afford it. Thankfully, those of us that can't still have an amzing camera to play with!

Whats up with your "I will accept nothing less than 2540p REDCODE" rant.
Take a chill pill with a side of 4k Redcode will ya?
It was already explained to you why 2540p red code is not currently possible. If are not happy, go find another 4k camera that can do 2540p compressed.

They never billed it as a "CURRENT" option. Nothing is current until the camera is shipping. As the RED team has stated a million times. They are in development. All specs are subject to change... YOU CAN COUNT ON IT.

yeah..amazing isn't it. You can thank the geniuses behind RED who are making such a feat possible.

Landon, I mean no disrespect, but it's obvious you are new to this project. If you spend a few days reading some of the thousands and thousands of threads on the Red camera for about a year now, all your questions will be answered.

I'll try to give you a head-start.

1. This open dialog development path with anyone interested enough to ask a question, or make a suggestion is an experiment Team Red boldly decided on from the very beginning. Because there so passionate about this project that wanted to take in as much input as humanly possible. Why? To make the best damm camera ever. At what cost ( to them )? Hundreds and hundreds of hours of personal time sacrificed, which could have been spent with there families, at the gym, pleasure reading or just going out to see a movie, etc.

These guys are working night and day to bring us, the customers this amazing camera. So, guess what? They do not have time to update the Web page everyday. Things are changing constantly.

2. When I and about 250 others put our faith in this project at NAB with a deposit, we didn't think we could afford to shoot 4k for years! We were doing back flips for the possibility of shooting 2k. But thanks to the genius of team Red and there relentless work ethic, we all be shooting 4k Redcode from day one. And we have seen the footage on the big screen and we are thrilled.

3. Please understand that many of us here have been on this board practically everyday for a year. So, if you can do some research on your own and ask about things you don't understand in a humble manner, you discover there are many members here that are willing to answer questions and explain things. Even if they have answered the same question hundreds of times this past year.

Good point SAM. I have to remind myself that people haven't been glued to dvx as I have been for the past year. It just annoys me when individuals post pointless rants. This Landon fella could have easily asked why 2540 red code wasnt available as an option with Red Code..instead of criticizing the red team for even having it posted in the chart as an option. Ah well.. back to work.

Agreed.

I think we're all getting a little burnt out.

Landon,

To your credit, you signed up for this forum using your own name. You’re apparently not hiding behind a pseudonym or handle. There's another side to that coin though - a Google search. A quick Google search of public information, for the name Landon D. Parks reveals that you apparently are an 18 year old student, tour guide, and filmmaker - assuming that there isn't more than one Landon D. Parks in Bloomington, Indiana. If that is not you, and you are someone else, please correct me on that.

Life is full of learning experiences. Nobody is born knowing anything. Online forums can be one of the best sources for learning. Good forum etiquette, especially when you first join a forum, calls for use of the search function to get up to speed on the issues that have been covered recently, and a measure of humility in approaching the existing forum members and the owner of the web site. To bait and troll existing members doesn't cut it even if you're a longtime member of the forum, much less when you have just joined. There's a mistaken notion that because forums are on the Internet that they are publicly property. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is private property. Jarred Land owns this web site as his business and private property. Permission to enter is subject to the rules he has set, and is revocable at any time at his discretion. Nobody has any "right" to use this web site, unless Jarred grants him or her access. A few pages ago on this thread, Jarred explained the 2540p issue to you accurately. Since you apparently insist on not using the search tool to review past threads, and seem to be intent on baiting and trolling this forum, it would not surprise me to see Jarred remove you from the membership rolls if that behavior persists.

I think you have a decision to make: 1) Use the search tool, be respectful to the existing forum members, and have this forum be a good source of learning for you 2) Continue on the course you have set and potentially be removed from access to this forum and web site.

Constructive criticism and respectful dissent are encouraged by the forum member rules. Baiting, trolling, and flaming are not. This is an awesome forum, with a good cross-section of knowledgeable professionals, progressive intermediates, and curious novices. You seem to have a good mind for 18 years old, and could potentially be a valuable contributor to this forum. As a former moderator for this forum, and someone who values everyone's opinions (even though I don't always agree with them), I'd like to see you stick around if you can play by the forum rules. If you can't or won't, then at some point you may be banned, which would be a loss for you and us.

What’s it going to be Landon?

Very nicely stated Gibby.

I recognize Landon from the cinematography.com boards. He's young, and has some wild opinions, but generally means no harm, from my experience. I was amused to see him here on dvxuser.com, shaking things up as usual. :)

Hi,

Landon used to be a major poster @.com until about a year ago. I think he fell out with a Mr Boddington amongst others! I am sure that Landon will shortly be fired up and able to answer any possible question concerning the Red One camera.

There are some wonderful threads to be read on .com (and elsewhere) if anyone is interested.

Stephen

Edit Landon used to call himself Features Director and upto last week Director / Producer. He changed is signature when I asked him if he had ever used a professional camera.

I am having problems with a link but topic 11264 page 5 'Hostel' @.com could be a laugh.

Haha I was just going to say Stephen, your post reminds me of a recent Southpark:

'Hello. We martogs want you martogs to know that this martog over here is a martog.' or something like that, anyway all the nouns and adjectives were I think 'martog'. Very confusing but quite amusing.

Yes, I'm the Landon D Parks that comes up on most Google searches. My profile HERE reads Tour guide, student and filmmaker, as well as states my age and city and state of residents. As you will notice, of all the forums I have posted on, at no time have I not included most of this information in my sig or profile. I'm not hiding behind anyone, I'm real.

I think you have a decision to make: 1) Use the search tool, be respectful to the existing forum members, and have this forum be a good source of learning for you 2) Continue on the course you have set and potentially be removed from access to this forum and web site.
I didn't mean to attack the RED company in any way. If I did, I'm sorry. I can occasionally get carried away with my thoughts, but at no time did I mean any real disrespect for the RED company or its Team of talented members. If you will recall, I have praised them for there design of the camera features, for the most part. I have had some compaints about it, but then again, I can't be the only one who thinks its NOT prefect yet.

Edit Landon used to call himself Features Director and upto last week Director / Producer. He changed is signature when I asked him if he had ever used a professional camera.
I'm a Director, not a cameraman or Cinematographer... So my ability to have ever been behind any camera at all is irrelivant to my job title as Director. So really, "Feature Film Director" does not state in any way that I have ever been behind a camera at all, it simply ment that I am involved in a feature film project, which I'm going to directing. I removed the "Feature Film Director" tag because until I actualkly START working ON the film (Filmming), I'm not going to tote myself about as a feature director yet. After some review, I thought it was skipping ahead to much. It had little to do with your comment to me about never being behind a professioinbal camera, I changed it because I updated my profile on this site with my personal information, and changed my format and layout of my signature at the same time.

I think he fell out with a Mr Boddington amongst others!
Ok, I didn't Fallout. I got 2, full time jobs.. It's called not having much free time to work with. Only recently have a gone down to 1 part time job, hence why I'm back posting some more. Just not on Cinematography.com.

love is in the air.... can you feel it?
I feel it man! I feel it, lol. People always tend to love me, especially when I challenge peoples opinion from time to time. Again, I mean no disrespect to any of these people, I just do occasionally get caught up in what I'm saying and maybe get a little to red faced.

I think I remember a quote from many years ago that was something to effect of "The first thing you have to do when becoming a photographer, is call yourself a photographer."

of course... my calc teacher in college always told the engineers in his class "At my graduation they told us 'just because you've been pretending to be engineers for 5 years doesn't mean you're engineers yet.'"

So go figure. It's an interesting (completely unrelated discussion) about what title you give one's self. I know I wear so many hats, I always get a little bit confused myself. I had a project director get so flustered and confused once he asked me to write my own job description for my new contract. ;)
