Well, then let me make this argument: If you can't record REDCODE in 2540p, what is the options? RAW uncompressed? To my knowledge, there a very few systems that would be able to hand such data rates. So we have the option to shoot a format which pretty much 100% of the population can't afford, If it's even possible to record RAW uncompressed 2540p data in any kind of decent frame rates, I'd be surprised. With the cost of recording RAW uncompressed 2540p data, you could easily shoot your project on 35mm film for cheaper.

you do realize that large productions that use RED will have something called a "budget", right?

I didn't know there was the capability to do on-location recording of 4k RAW uncompressed data. With that cleared up, I can see HOW the format works.. But to be honest, it seems like it would be cheaper to just shoot film instead of paying hundreds of thousands for a huge RAID setup... Plus the logistic of lugging it around on location.

It may be possible to shot 4k RAW uncompressed, but not very economically feasible. In my opinion anyway.

Landon, is the glass is half empty or half full? Why worry about the high cost of 4k raw uncompressed? Even if I could afford it, I really doubt I would shoot it. We will have 4k Redcode, and it's very affordable.

In one or two years new technology will be in place and the cost of 4k raw uncompressed will be reasonable as well. But for now, Redcode is the way to go.

If you're thinking that anything less than 4k raw uncompressed won't look good, I attended the LA screening, and you could not tell the difference from the raw uncompressed clips and the Redcode clips.

You may not fully understand this until you see it for yourself on a large screen in a proper theater, but 4k Redcode is outstanding.

Redcode is truly visually loss-less and does not have artifacts like the compression were used to seeing.

IMHO most poeple will be shooting 4k Redcode, because the price to performance ratio combined with the flexibility in post just can't be beat.

Wait until you see it, you're going to be blown away.

...and end scene.

Hi Landon,

ok, everybody has the right to tell their opinions, but why do you say this:

I'm a Director, not a cameraman or Cinematographer... So my ability to have ever been behind any camera at all is irrelivant to my job title as Director. So really, "Feature Film Director" does not state in any way that I have ever been behind a camera at all, it simply ment that I am involved in a feature film project, which I'm going to directing.

And continuously frequent camera-forums ???
I´m a director and operate on the productions I´m working at ( I´m not a dop ), so I have a certain interest on the tech stuff.

I removed the "Feature Film Director" tag because until I actualkly START working ON the film (Filmming), I'm not going to tote myself about as a feature director yet. After some review, I thought it was skipping ahead to much. It had little to do with your comment to me about never being behind a professioinbal camera, I changed it because I updated my profile on this site with my personal information, and changed my format and layout of my signature at the same time.

Hi Landon,

When I joined cinematography.com you were the 5th or 6th highest poster on that forum (total posts). I guess at the time you had some aspirations in the field of cinematography.

I asked earlier in this thread if you had ever used a professional camera, that could equally have been as a Director.

I'm a technical person as much as I am artistic. I want to be envolved not only with the actors, but the technical side of it as well, such as what camera's are used, what format is shot, what mic is the sound guy going to use, etc....

Thats why I frequent camera forums as well as general filmmaking forums.

PS) To my knowlege, I'm still a member of cinematography.com.... I just have not been there in a long while. Yeah, at one time I was like #3 I think, for a very short time.

Actually, you can shoot 4k raw onboard thanks to Redcode! Even though the footage has been compressed, you get all of the benefits that working with raw has to offer. The only thing that will probably be cost prohibitive for many people at the outset is 4k uncompressed, as that will take a large raid to handle. But make no mistake - RED's IBC announcement was the news that brought their camera to the next level. 4k raw for all! :)

Duh.... Of Course, I know that. It's late, I meant 4k uncompressed. Thanks for the catch. I'm going to fix that now.

And I couldn't agree more about the IBC announcement.

Cheers

No worries, Sam; I essentially assumed as much. It's just good to make sure the terms are correct as people come on here from all over, pick up little snippets of information, and then go run and tell others on other sites or mailing lists and it quickly becomes "common knowledge" on the internet (whether that knowledge is accurate or not). Of course, that's not always a bad thing - the fact that one can actually shoot 4k raw right out of the box with Red is pretty darn remarkable, and the more people that know, the better! :)

By the way, I've got RED ONE #80, so it looks like we're going to be bumping elbows at the Red factory come launch time!

LOL. I was thinking the same last night when I responded to your post.

I'll keep an eye out for you, I'll be the one with the silly ear to ear grin.

Happy Holidays.

Or how to communicate specifically what you want. I know just enough about cinematography, that I can appreciate what it is my DP does for me and that I can't do it. ;)
