Sound problem when recording with P2!!!

I called panasonic and they said they are aware of the problem and are working on it...and I am like well don't you think you should have let your customers know about this...I spent a day just trying to figure out what was going on....I mean if someone just told me I could have figured out something.....I really didn't know about the slot 2 fix till after the shoot....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

i don't know if it is every camera or what the deal is. I'm so confused still to be honest!?

I am wondering if you record to firestore if this will happen. I could have gone to it and not had any audio issues. If that idea would have worked, in that case i could have just rented a firestore and my interview would have been saved. Now I am worried that I am going to get in big trouble from the main client.

I'm pretty disappointed in Panasonic on this one. I understand things mess up, but they should have really told us about this.

Why is this on a thread on a message board and not being told to the Panasonic owners??????

I love my hvx, but this is disappointing to say the least

I am sad :(

I'm even more confused now -- I just tried every possible combination on an HPX500 and I cannot get it to beep! This is the 500 that was beeping before, and now it's not beeping. I tried 16GB, 4GB, and 8GB cards, tried it on AC power and battery power, with front or rear mics or no mics, and no matter what I do I can't make it beep. Which is encouraging and irritating at the same time! It's encouraging to know that the beep can go away, but it's irritating to not know why the beep went away!

But, to those of you who are currently beeping -- try turning the "ACCESS LED" menu item off. This was a suggestion from Mikko, based on the notion that someone else said that the beeping seemed to be synchronized to the access LEDs, so maybe turning 'em off will silence the beep?

Am I right in understanding that this is an issue with the "new" firmware used to upgrade to 16GB P2 cards?

I still haven't gotten around to upgrading my firmware (hasn't come up) - and now I'm thinking I'll hold off if there is the potential for this.

I am happy for you Barry that you could not get it to happen again on your hpx 500, I honestly hope it never comes back.....but honestly sometimes it doesn't happen on my camera and the majority of the time it does. That to me is a scary prospect. Not knowing if your audio is going to be working properly when doing pro shoots.

I tried turning off the "ACCESS LED" and it didn't change anything for me.

I guess my question is, is this something happening in all cameras or only certain ones. Is this something directly related to 16gig firmware update? Does anyone like Panasonic have answers?

I am wondering because if I didn't have this interview I wouldn't have tested out my audio for any issues. Perhaps it has been this way the whole time I don't know? I have these pro sony mdr 7506 headphones so I could really hear everything going on, maybe too good. Is that why perhaps others don't know of the problem. When I play it back on the tv, the beeping on slot 1 you can kind of hear if you are looking for it. Stuff on slot 2 is far fainter and less likely to hear on a standard television. The time i really hear it is when I put on my headphones and perhaps now I am so accustom to looking for the noise that I can pick it up rather quickly where others might not really hear it or look for it.

I am just not sure if this is a specific issue for me or for everyone?

I just wish someone would come out with some definitive answers rather than me trying to pinpoint the problem and figure this out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing that's what caused it, but am not 100% sure.

I'm not happy about it either. I'd rather have it corralled and controlled and know exactly when it happens, and exactly what causes it to go away.

It's good to know that it *can* go away, but it's vital to know WHY it went away. And I can't know that until I get it happening again, and find a way to make it go away.

Disappointing; I had high hopes for that.

Don't know.

No statement has been issued, nobody has mentioned anything that I know of. As far as I know there are no answers yet.

My exact circumstances; using 7506s I could hear it if I tried. It may have been there before, I don't know, but I'm sure it's not there now, so I expect that it's not always present and that's why people aren't hearing it. But it does show up, I've heard it, so it definitely does happen occasionally. But I can't figure out how to make it happen again and that's really annoying!

That we don't know. The forums certainly aren't awash with thousands of customers complaining about beeping, but we've seen enough different reports (maybe 10 or so) to know that it's not an isolated incident.

I just wish someone would come out with some definitive answers rather than me trying to pinpoint the problem and figure this out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, I'm in the same boat. Nobody's giving answers so I'm trying to figure it out too. If you can come up with any circumstances that affect the beep, share it so we can try to get to the bottom of this.

Barry,

i just want to say thanks so much for all the help....in this matter and every matter. Means a great deal to me!!!!!!!!!

I am wondering if this is a more isolated incident with only a few reports maybe it is a few defective cameras?

that said I don't think everyone is being as anal as we are about the audio so perhaps it exists in a lot of cameras but they aren't picking it up or monitoring it to know. I feel if I didn't have those pro headphones I perhaps would not have heard the beeping.

if anything new comes up I will let you know...I have emailed Panasonic technical support a couple times and am waiting some news.

Interesting idea that I want to try is if you record to a firestore drive. Would that fix the issue? I don't have a firestore, but its an interesting idea and a temporary fix.

That's probably true. The beeping is very faint, so I bet people have it and haven't even noticed.

That would be a very valuable piece of information -- it'd let us know if the beep was being introduced at the P2 level or if it's already encoded regardless of the recording method. I doubt it though, as all the reports say that the beep is much more pronounced on slot 1. In fact, all the reports I've heard except yours say that the beeping only happens on slot 1, so -- it sure seems like it has to be related to the cards...

Just for additional diagnostics - can we hear from people what their camera's date of manufacture/serial number is, as they report whether they do or do not have this problem? Also, perhaps, the sdame info for the cards...

OK... I have some additional data... (just got 2 16GB cards in the mail)

1) I hear beeping over the headphones at the same level when recording to either slot; I hear the beeping physically when recording to Slot 1, more quietly (almost inaudible) when recording to Slot 2.

2) The rate of beeping is definitely proportional to the data rate being recorded... 24P, 30P, 60P all have fast beeping; 30p beeping about half as fast, 24p a little slower

3) In these experiments, I find I also have noise when recording to the 4GB card! Not beeping; sounds sorta like a 1200baud modem signal, if memory serves...

4) These noises are physically audible (if you're real close) and present in mic-level and line-level audio, at the headphones, and in the recorded files

5) Beeping/screeching is the same level or LESS if anything in mic level signals compared to line-level signals... meaning the noise is entering the signal after the Mic->line boost, before the preamp

6) I don't hear the PHYSICAL noise when playing video on the cards in either slot. Can't say anything about the headphones there, 'cause all the recorded stuff beeps. If anyone with a PC can put some footage ith known, clean audio (or, better yet, absolute silence) back on a card, we can be fairly definitive about whether playback introduces any beeping.

P.S. my HVX is fairly early (delivered March 2006), SN#C6TC00xxx R; the cards just got here!

Well, the beeping is clearly audible (for me, at extreme gains) in the headphones, clearly stopping and starting when recording stops and starts, and when inserting a new card for a second or two. It's also physically audible (much more so in Slot 1 than Slot 2 in my case, even though it's electronically "about the same" in the headphones). So, in my case - clearly introduced somewhere in the audio system after the mic->line level boost, but before the gain pots are applied. Definitely in the analog audio stages, pre-A/D conversion (since gain pots affect beep/screech volume).

Being as the noise clearly stops and starts with recording to the P2 cards, I'd guess that the noise would be a problem when recording to the firestore only if recording to P2 as well. I haven't specifically tested for this, but I've done a LOT of work with HVX audio recorded only via firewire without encountering the beeping; noticed it clearly as soon as I recorded to cards.

I almost always record double system, so this would be not too terrible if it was only electronic noise - but the physically audible beeping would make my nice new, finally-able-to-shoot-long-form dual 16GB setup useless for concert-hall settings. It's like a watch alarm... as soon as you notice it, it starts growing more and more irritating! Darn, I REALLY HOPE there's a way out of this, 'cause I CANNOT use the camera (with P2 cards, anyway) the way it is.

Been gone a lot, but as I read this, is there a chance this has been introduced with the firmware upgrade to accept 16gig cards?
We haven't done the firmware since we only have the 4 8gig cards.
I never heard of this until people updated their firmware.

Try it for us, Ted! Just put on your headphones, set your inputs for line in, set your gains to max with nothing connected, and hit record!

As I said, I did hear significant noise with a 4GB card, but not beeping - more like sqealing - but definitely starting and stopping when recording to P2.

Great info, and I've forwarded it on. Question for you now -- can you find a way to make it go away? I can't tell you how annoying it is that I can't make the beep happen now on this 500, because I wanted to test all sorts of stuff but I can't get it to beep again! In some ways that's good, it means it can go away (or it means that I'm so old I can't hear those frequencies anymore... hmmm...) but repeatability is the key to diagnosing the problem, and I can't get it to repeat... most annoying... :)

Well... you know how it is... for a while I was convinced that the noise was much less, or not there at all, when set to mic rather than line input, but persisting I assured myself that the preamp hiss was just masking it. I thought it was lower or nonexistent on the built-in mics, but ditto - more so. The ears get used to it, or make their own strange high-frequency sounds, etc... so, sure, from time to time I thought it was gone, but if I concentrated on my hearing, for long enough to let all the sound sources sort themselves out, it was always there.

As for the physical sound... yes, the level of that also seemed to change or be subject to ear fatigue, etc. But in trying to localize it, I actually used a shotgun mic to "sweep" the camera... if you try THAT with enough gain, you'll have no doubts as to whether the physical beeping / screeching is there. (I don't think it was at all conclusive, but the sound seemed strongest when the shotgun was targeted at either the P2 slots or the mic/line switches on the front of the camera. ??)

It would have been nice if I had tested thoroughly with the 4GB card right before upgrading the firmware... but then, there were no reports of noise with the 4GB cards, and the "type" of noise made by the 4GB is a lot more like typical low-level computer-generated electronic noise.

I would like to hear from everyone else if they can hear SOME noise with 4GB/8GB cards, pre and post-upgrade; my suspicion at this point is that this is a fundamental electronic issue and NOT solveable via firmware.

Also, I'm certain, but it would be nice if someone would confirm for the record that the 16GB beeps change rate with the recorded data rate.

bump - anyone can confirm any of this? Especially screechy noise of 4 (or 8) GB cards in non-firmware-upgraded HVXs?

I got busy today but will try and check on the 8gig non-firmware upgraded status tomorrow. I'm interested as well, but personally hope it was a firmware "bonus". :) I'd be ticked at myself if I let this go un-noticed! :(
If not I should get it done anyway.
