F55: Sony F55, Red Scarlet or Arri Amira

Once you get to 4K Raw and grade properly, the difference between cameras become minute.

Owning gives me time to have practice, experience and confidence with the camera. I don't want to feel rushed like I'm on the clock.

I'm thinking about buying the Alexa Mini but everywhere I look to get a price or purchase it it says I have to put down a deposit. Does that mean they are on back-order?

If so, the delivery might interfere with our Garden Club meetings. If I'm not there next Thursday, tell Beatrice I was whacking off to an Arri, ok?

This is not aimed at the OP or anyone in particular so please don't take it that way. As someone who has been doing this a while, I'm amazed as to how many young guys and gals buy really expensive cameras rather than rent. Renting can be intimidating, I get that, with the COI requirements and so forth. But if you're going to be a filmmaker you have to cross that bridge eventually. Any kind of equipment rental requires a COI. A wise person told me once that if your camera can't pay for itself within a two year window you shouldn't buy it. Why? Because at the rate camera tech changes you'll have a paperweight on your hands by the time it pays for itself. Ask yourself how many people are renting RED One cameras these days or want to buy one. Or even film cameras! An Arri SR3 was the bomb for many years. Now they are on ebay for nothing.

So that being said. If you feel a need to buy a camera, get the best inexpensive one that fits the need. FS5, FS7, Blackmagic, etc. and spend some budget that you saved on a few nice lights, camera rigging like shape handles or a follow focus, lenses. Stuff that will have life for many years down the road. Because in 5 years the latest camera tech today will be low tech, and in 10 years will be useless. That's my experience anyway. I still have a gen 1 Redrock follow focus and matte box that still gets much use. The Redrock spinning lens adapter I bought with that stuff is in a box that I can't seem to throw away yet for sentimental reasons... but it's worthless. But at the time it made me money and paid for itself in the first year or even 6 months.

It's a tough decision for sure. We all want our stuff to look the best it can be. With a mid level camera and an awesome DP will make your stuff look so much better than an awesome camera with crap lighting and camera work.

Best of luck.

Kevin

You want to buy an Amira or an Alexa Mini or an F55 because you have 40,000 sitting around and want to make your own indie films, but can't decide what or how and "but I'll miss the stealth factor of my Sony A7s" or something like that...is this post a joke?...It's hard to decide whether this is a real question...if it is, rent a few cameras period!...you certainly seem to have no shortage of money!

Everyone is falling for this guy. He's clearly trolling and baiting this forum.

Ya, I've considered that. But I chose to think that he just hadn't thought this through. However, I'm now just following this thread for entertainment reasons. I doubt I'll post again in this thread (which perhaps some will appreciate).

Is it just me or does this footy just look "non impressive" ? I suppose it's technically fine but "look" wise ....blah. Looks like some poorly lite soap opera footy to me. bland and flat.

Lighten up, Francis.

I'm a troll? Trolling? What does that even mean? Some little guy who lives under a bridge? Trolling for opinions? Yeah. The response has been great and I thank this site and all its wonderful contributors. It might help someone facing the same choices I have.

Half of the video is LOG so it's supposed to look like that, and the other half is "graded". Regardless, I've never liked the 4.6K.

Took the words outta my mouth. Terribly (if at all) lit, appallingly (if at all) graded. A great example illustrating that 'the camera doth not maketh the man'. Appropriately bizarre post in a totally bizarre thread IMHO!

I had that thought as well.

"It might help someone facing the same choices I have."

The advice may help the next person who has $40k to spend on a camera with no need or desire to recoup any of that expenditure? The next person jumping from a Sony A7 to a $40k+ camera system despite their being inexperienced and having little knowledge of high end cameras??

WHO does that??

He could have been filming ProRes...I don't think he mentioned RAW anywhere.

Sometimes RAW and LOG are used interchangeably though.

Not all will agree, but have you considered buying a used Sony F3?

If you find one with the bodyarmour, slog444 key and get a zacuto eye, Vlocks and Oddysey 7Q its basicly as close you can get to an amira thats not Arri (besides F35).
Shoots great 1080p 60p in 10bit. Great lens mount. Great image. Best lowlight I´ve seen. Perfect indie camera.

2 big and bulky for my taste in solo-operator style though.

I do. Someone else might take a different route. Good to have the discussion though.

I don't see the point in buying a 4.6k until BM has finally resolved the magenta corner issue 100%.

The overall color science could also use some help. It's not the most color accurate camera on the market.
