For video this would mean more resampling of the image to get to UHD - no thanks. It's 12mp for a very good reason as it's near 1:1 capture of UHD.I really wanted more mp. 18MP would have been a sweet spot for me.

If sensor or the way it is read from hasn't changed I don't think we will see an improvement in DR. SLOG2 on the A7s already holds more DR than is usable. Heck there is barely a difference in useable DR between CINE4 and SLOG2.
SLOG3 will just waste more precious 8bit data recording unusable shadow noise at the expense of important midtones.
At $3,000, it's an excellent buy for a given image quality andf workflow .... unless you already have an external recorder. Then the improvements are marginal at best.As an a7s owner with a Shogun I'm pretty uninterested in this. I'd rather get the a7rii but realistically I'm gonna wait until the dust settles on the new 4k stuff next year. Then probably either get the C300ii or FS7... FS5 looks interesting too.
But the a7sii just seems like a cash grab at this point.
I agree actually! Unnecessarily constrained indeed. With the a7s if you shoot a raw still in slog2 mode, it appears to have the exact same dynamic range as a raw still taken in ISO 640 with no-PP. This matches up closely with your tests indicating slog2 is running at ISO 800 with a curve applied. So be it 640 or 800, neither is the sensor at it's best (http://blog.kasson.com/?p=6172).Check my rant here.
Summary: ISO 3200 is an unnecessary constraint on the a7S, it could have been 400. Forcing a higher ISO reduces the available DR. With slog3, ISO 1600 is the bare minimum (it's no-PP ISO 100 with a much wider gamma curve applied to the sensor output). And it's also the absolute best combination the sensor can work with in terms of DR. It's exactly what I was asking for after those sensor tests.

I am currently shooting on an A7s and a FS700 internally. While the A7sII has a lot of the features I was hoping it would have, the cost of upgrading would be similar to the cost of a Shogun. Given that a Shogun could give both the A7s and the FS700 a new lease on life are there any opinions on this versus upgrading to the A7sII?
Yeah if you can live without ibis, 1080/120 and slog3, a7s+shogun would seem to be more worth it.
For me there is a fourth important upgrade - the second generation Hand Grip.
I find it more natural to my grip. The A7S' hand grip is too anemic.
There is also a fifth upgrade: Tweaked color tones, especially for skin tones!
There is also confusion if the ISO noise has been improved. A rep on Cinema5D vaguely said the ISO noise levels have been improved.
I think you answered your own question. The Shogun will definitely give you more bang for the buck. People are currently all hyped up about the A7S II, but in the cold light of day, it's essentially the same camera as the A7S, with the addition of a worthless stabilizer (for video).
