Re: A7SII ANNOUNCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i will try to update in A7sII from A7s because of the IBIS only !
I have tested it in A7rII and is doing a very good job.

Here is a test i did a few days earlier...

As far as i'm concerned the IBIS is the central most important difference. The biggest issue (IMHO) with the A7s are the micro jitters that happen when hand holding and with the slow sensor read out it produces very visible jello and wobble. The IBIS will get rid of those jitters for the most part, as seen on the A7rII. It is essential for this form factor. The Slog3 etc is icing on the cake.

cheers

When will sony update their firmware with anamorphic modes, so we can use 2X anamorphic lenses. As all other brands have it like GH4, NX1, 5D III ML.... Seems like a easy firmware update to me..

When? Probably never. Sony doesn't have a great track record for adding simple features via firmware update, especially if they have a new version of a camera coming out. You'll likely need to get an external recorder that desqueezes.

Hey toxotis70,

Could you do a stabilizer test where you walk around (and maybe even run) with a wide angle lens on the camera? Every example I've seen of Sony's IBIS in this scenario looks very poor. Thanks.

thats too bad. Well a external recorder will not fix this I think. As the image output needs to be 4:3 and not 16:9.

It's not an internal gimbal. It takes the small jitters out.

I think you answered your own question. The Shogun will definitely give you more bang for the buck. People are currently all hyped up about the A7S II, but in the cold light of day, it's essentially the same camera as the A7S, with the addition of a worthless stabilizer (for video).

I film with my A7S exclusively handheld (A7S + K2M + bottom handle) which makes for a very small, light and unobtrusive setup. The stabilizer will let me use my 55mm 1.8 lens for video which I currently can't do, that's quite valuable in my book but your mileage may vary. Likewise having internal 4k will keep my setup light and small, also quite valuable in my book as I do not want to use rigs, monitor add on's and other such things.

It's improved upon that if you use slog: sgamut3.cine is A LOT better than the plain sgamut that the a7S has (sgamut is heavily non-linear, sgamut3.cine is perfectly linear by design, that alone makes it usable-without-an-official-LUT).

And I also want to see a test of IBIS with somebody walking with a wide angle lens. I know it's not an internal gimbal, but can it look like one if you're careful enough?

IBIS doesn't replace a gimbal. Its only for removing micro-jitter , so you can then make stabilisation in post.
I dont have any more A7rII... i gave it back, so i will wait for A7sII .

Just wondering, are you able to film 1080 in APS-C and FF? Any other modes? If so, do you need to shutdown the camera to switch?

Thank you.

Well, on the A7S you don't have to shut down to switch modes. I see no reason why the MK II would be any different.

I'm not sure about the technical aspect of the internal stabilization of cameras or lenses. There are many camcorders with insane stabilizations internally which work just like a steadicam but never ever does a lens or big sensor camera come even close to it. I suppose you should forget about getting that level of stabilization from a big sensor camera for now. Anyway the stabilization provided by sony is great on itself so no complaining there.

Samuel: I'm sure you could if you practice your ninja steps to walk a few meters with the camera very steady and get it decent. I suck at walking and i think i have managed to take a few steps with a wide angel or standard focal length with stabilization and make it work for me. A 14 mm on ff is very very steady

There are two ways to get to APS-C on the A7-Series of cameras:

1) In the menu (under the icon that looks like a gear in tab 5) you can activate [APS-C Crop] = On
2) Set[ClearImage Zoom] = 1.5x

Both options above can be done without switching off the camera (unlike Nikon). However only option 2 allows you to switch WHILE recording and is CUSTOM BUTTON ASSIGNABLE! Option 1 requries you to stop recording and go into the menu to do the switch.

In the A7S I saw no difference between using either other than slightly more rolling shutter when using option 2 but only with super quick and jarring whip pans.

Note that IBIS works better with a native E-Mount lens with built-in OSS since it uses the OSS for pitch and yaw. If the sensor does pitch + yaw the image will be distorted on pan movements and movement in general.

EDIT: I just recieved my A7RII and put my Batis 25 lens on it (has no OSS) and the IBIS works really well, I did not see any lens distortion from the pitch/yaw movement. So it looks like IBIS is better on the A7RII than the A7II!

Any confirmation that ALL video modes in the A7SII (4K, HD // FF, S35 // 24fps, 30fps, 60fps, 120fps) are done with ZERO pixel binning?

Anyone know the bitrate of 1080@120p?

I'm deciding if I should go with the A7SII or just buy a second A7S.
