Re: A7SII ANNOUNCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For video this would mean more resampling of the image to get to UHD - no thanks. It's 12mp for a very good reason as it's near 1:1 capture of UHD.

Supersampling usually means a sharper, better image, and makes better use of a UHD storage container...

Pros and cons for each. 1:1 allows huge pixels to capture light, super sampling allows sharper images with potentially better color. A7r2 is the Sony mirrorless for you if you want the latter option, a7s for the former.

If sensor or the way it is read from hasn't changed I don't think we will see an improvement in DR. SLOG2 on the A7s already holds more DR than is usable. Heck there is barely a difference in useable DR between CINE4 and SLOG2.
SLOG3 will just waste more precious 8bit data recording unusable shadow noise at the expense of important midtones.

Check my rant here.
Summary: ISO 3200 is an unnecessary constraint on the a7S, it could have been 400. Forcing a higher ISO reduces the available DR. With slog3, ISO 1600 is the bare minimum (it's no-PP ISO 100 with a much wider gamma curve applied to the sensor output). And it's also the absolute best combination the sensor can work with in terms of DR. It's exactly what I was asking for after those sensor tests.

For those asking for more Mpix: unless you want them for stills, I really don't see the point. Yes, 4K-from-6K is even sharper, but have you seen how sharp the a7S 4K is? It's insane. A completely different league from its already-pretty-sharp 1080p.

As an a7s owner with a Shogun I'm pretty uninterested in this. I'd rather get the a7rii but realistically I'm gonna wait until the dust settles on the new 4k stuff next year. Then probably either get the C300ii or FS7... FS5 looks interesting too.

But the a7sii just seems like a cash grab at this point.

At $3,000, it's an excellent buy for a given image quality andf workflow .... unless you already have an external recorder. Then the improvements are marginal at best.

And, clearly, Sony's trying to squeeze everything they can out of the same body, the same sensors and the same processors but everyone else does it too and for much longer product cycles to boot.

I agree actually! Unnecessarily constrained indeed. With the a7s if you shoot a raw still in slog2 mode, it appears to have the exact same dynamic range as a raw still taken in ISO 640 with no-PP. This matches up closely with your tests indicating slog2 is running at ISO 800 with a curve applied. So be it 640 or 800, neither is the sensor at it's best (http://blog.kasson.com/?p=6172).
Couple that with the A7s non-standard sgamut colour and the fact that Sony never bothered releasing a proper LUT for it, and you can't really blame me for being suspicious of the new slog3 addition.
I'm happy to be wrong though, maybe it will be implemented perfectly, tweaked for 8bit and Sony will release official LUTs...

That's where I am with my FS700/7q combo. Nothing has me like OMG! I have to sell my ish and upgrade! Some days the weight gets to me...but other than that I'm pretty content in this 4k world. If anything i'd like to add a package like yours to my current arsenal.

I have compared the A7S II and A7S on IBC. And the slog3 does render out some better colors. I did not see any DR improvement inside the building. However I could not take it outside to test properly so..

You're looking at this from a purely video perspective. I'm looking at the photo side. I don't need 42mp of the A7RII, but I do need more than the 12MP of the A7S.

Ideally, I'd like 24mp with the A7S's low light capabilities. Done. That would be a camera I'd leave Canon for.

But on the topic of video, supersampling is almost all benefit, no negatives. Why don't you want that?

I think you're missing the point that more mp invariably means that all things being even, you'll lose light sensitivity to a lower mp sensor with larger pixels.

I am currently shooting on an A7s and a FS700 internally. While the A7sII has a lot of the features I was hoping it would have, the cost of upgrading would be similar to the cost of a Shogun. Given that a Shogun could give both the A7s and the FS700 a new lease on life are there any opinions on this versus upgrading to the A7sII?

I think you answered your own question. The Shogun will definitely give you more bang for the buck. People are currently all hyped up about the A7S II, but in the cold light of day, it's essentially the same camera as the A7S, with the addition of a worthless stabilizer (for video).

Thanks guys, that is pretty much what I was thinking especially when you add 4K out of the FS700. I think the Shogun also does 1080/120, the A7sII does 1080/240. HFR is nice to have but I rarely use more than 100 FPS anyway (Shooting PAL).

Yeah if you can live without ibis, 1080/120 and slog3, a7s+shogun would seem to be more worth it.

For me there is a fourth important upgrade - the second generation Hand Grip.

I find it more natural to my grip. The A7S' hand grip is too anemic.

There is also a fifth upgrade: Tweaked color tones, especially for skin tones!

There is also confusion if the ISO noise has been improved. A rep on Cinema5D vaguely said the ISO noise levels have been improved.

I've heard/read that the noise has been improved, certainly the A7rII has better noise than the A7s. Also if Slog3 is 1600 by default then there will be better noise as a factor of that regardless if the camera hardware has improved or not. That better colorimetry is promising too. All in all i'm hopeful that all these smaller changes will improve on the A7s so it produces closer to what the sensor is capable of in stills model.

I don't think there's anything groundbreaking in the Mk 2 but i do think it sorts out pretty much all the issues with the first version.

The only thing that hasn't been mentioned anywhere is whether the read out is improved, i.e. the rolling shutter. It's written that the performance is *better* that the A7rII but there's no context to that statement

cheers
Paul

When will sony update their firmware with anamorphic modes, so we can use 2X anamorphic lenses. As all other brands have it like GH4, NX1, 5D III ML.... Seems like a easy firmware update to me..

Why do you think IBIS is worthless? I havent personally see it in action, but in theory it seems to be one of the big selling points of the camera because it works with any lens...right?
If you add 1080/120...better AF and ofcourse internal 4K...it looks like a good deal for 500$ more than the original A7S (according to BH prices).
