No PDAF means no fast autofocus for Canon lenses. Damn.

SLOG3/SGAMUT3 is nice. Hopefully this will fix the sickly sgamut colour from the A7s. No 10bit output does undercut the usefulness of LOG shooting though :(

Mention of full pixel readout for 120fps HD suggests this sensor can read faster = less rolling shutter. Hopefully a lot less.

Assuming it's the same sensor. If it makes a nicer picture that would be a bonus.

With the price jump I'm thinking purchasing a PIX-E5H may be a better way to spend my upgrade money.

You are wise to think that. An external monitor/recorder is a much better investment then upgrading cameras

8-bit is definitely enough for slog2, but slog3 is a lot flatter. At 8-bit, you go from 29 values per stop of light with slog2 to 20 values per stop of light with slog3. That's prone to banding. People are going to complain. And I'm not going to care at all: I'd rather fight banding than clipped highlights.

If you shoot using a monitor, an external recorder is amost a must: they are so great and so cheap today that it's difficult to pass on them. And if you're getting an external recorder anyway, then the a7S II "just" adds slog3, IBIS and better images at high frame rates. Which is a very relative "just" because slog3 is a big deal: the a7S II probably has a couple of stops better DR than the a7S. Slog3 is Alexa territory (with everything else compromised, because, yes, 8-bit).

Other than the ibis (and maybe internal 4k), I feel a lot of this could have been given to the a7s in a firmware upgrade. Of course I don't know that, but I mean a new picture profile certainly could, and 1080/120 certainly seems feasible even if it's just HDMI out. Starting to feel more and more that Sony, while innovative, isn't a company I want to heavily invest in at this level of camera. They'd rather just release a new camera than improve the one that's already out. I assume many people will disagree.

Instead of two different cameras with two different sensors but roughly the same output, Sony should have made one camera with 10-bit, SLog3, 220 Mbps XAVC-I. Maybe it will come on FSII or some other camera above it in the $12,000-$15,000 range.

I still can't get over the fact that they omitted phase detection. If they had just given the A7SII what the A7RII had for focus points, this camera would have been a no brainer. But I enjoy PDAF so much that I really can't go with the A7SII. I never find myself shooting above 12,800 ISO anyways.

I'm waiting to hear back about the rolling shutter performance. I have an A7RII on pre-order and the rolling shutter will determine if I switch my pre-order.

Does phase detection af only matter when the entire sensor area is used for auto focus? The only auto focus I ever use on my current A7S is the large size square in the middle of the screen where I quickly af on that then let go of the focus button and leave focus locked. So I'm wondering if the lack of phase detection af would even matter to me since perhaps it doesn't benefit that style of af use. Aside from that, I'd the A7SII is a likely buy for me.

If sensor or the way it is read from hasn't changed I don't think we will see an improvement in DR. SLOG2 on the A7s already holds more DR than is usable. Heck there is barely a difference in useable DR between CINE4 and SLOG2.
SLOG3 will just waste more precious 8bit data recording unusable shadow noise at the expense of important midtones.

Phase Detection is quicker (instant!) and more decisive than Contrast Detection, from my experiences anyways. For the original A7S for example, using 25 Contrast Detect Points, when you drive focus there is a delay, it is not instant. And in some cases it doesn't drive at all! Yes Phase Detection has its weaknesses, but I have always enjoyed Phase Detection over Contrast Detection.

I use it mainly for documentary work where I need to pre-focus in an instant.

Here is a great example:
