Please recommend a slider/glider for GH1

the idea was to save weight if it was able to fit the aluminium igus rails i would just go and buy some linear bearings to fit. but they dont. would have also made life easier to mount to a tripod too. just have to source some aluminum rail extrusion wit the same profile to match. unless there is some special interaction between the bearings and steel that is better than bearing to aluminum.

Bearings have steel balls inside them.
I do not think that aluminium rails are good option here.

Forgot to add, portability would be important too because these are mostly family stuff. I am now thinking of about 500 bucks also if it is worth it. That Philip Bloom one look nice but don't know if it will be an overkill for me.

I thought it could fit in a pocket...

I like Indysystem things, but this item is not good.
It is cheap, non-smooth thing.

Can you please tell me which of the Indysystem sliders would be good? Or any other ready to use slider with a good reputation in 300-500 range?

The linear bearing slide you posted look interesting, but I can't figure out how to make it into a working one. So for my use, I think I will be better off with a ready made thing.

Thanks a lot.:)

The Igus (Zaza) slider is actually being sold directly from Igus on Amazon now. http://www.amazon.com/DryLin®-Linea...DIT8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1292364772&sr=8-6

It is under $200 and already has everything assembled and pre-drilled. Just got mine today, and like everyone else, am very impressed with how great the slider is for the price. The also sell sliders that are not pre-drilled for $150. So if you handy you can save even more $$$. Seems like the best option out there right now (for the price).

I have read a LOT of bad things about the 2ft indisystem slider. Do not get it.

just received my slider and today, did my very first slide. The instructions that came with the slider says that the gliding will be smoother after using it for a little while, so this first glide is still a little stiff, but not bad for first attempt (if it stutters at all, it is the vimeo video not the slider. the motion is very fluid on the actual video):

after looking at all the sliders, i decided to spend more and get this Atlas 10 slider from cinevate. it is beautifully built.

I purchased the E-Z Slider at www.e-zslider.com. Very smooth, easy to use. I love it.

My Indislider Mini is smooth. It's just a matter of learning to use the gear you buy, and not cry if your first test slide doesn't look like Hollywood movie dolly shot, 5 minutes after you open the box. Practice. Practice. Practice...like all things video. ;)

The OP has a budget of $150 and is using it to shoot home movies. The Indislider-Mini is $99 and turn-key. It's also very lightweight.

I've never used the slider on a paid job, never needed it. Mostly just a few shots of my cats, and it otherwise just collects dust. But for $99, I couldn't resist, and am pretty happy with it. :D

I use a Manfrotto 577 adapter so that it instant attaches to my tripod. It's light enough I could probably shoot a entire wedding+reception with it attached to the tripod, if I were so compelled to do such a thing.

whats your view on which will be more weather resistant, the linear bearings with steel balls or the igus drylin bushes. Recon a good coat of silicon spray lubricant will aid in rust prevention of the linear bearings? Also, had a careful read of the ebay sellers description of the rails, says its chrome plated aluminium rails. so thats a plus weight wise.

I don't know.
Non painted aluminium is not good for bad conditions.
As for "chrome plated aluminium rails" I don't know that you mean.
Rails on my link are solid steel rods with aluminium support.

I came a bit late back to this thread. Thanks for the making it live again and all the new suggestions. I am reading around a bit more to understand what I will be getting or not getting with the choice I make.

Will be back after with more informed questions later :)

Thank you all!

Bearings are very rough

Bearings are very rough

Under $150 you can only buy two 1000mm rails with linear bearings.
It'll be about $100 for rails + 4 bearings.
Smothness will be better compared to Zaza slider.
Weight for 12mm rails will be, of course, larger (due to steel rails).

I bought this and am very dissappointed with the bearings. The rails are fantastic but there is no way to get a smooth slow slide. I even shot them with some silicon lube but they are still rough. I don't think the bearings are built with lubrication. The are very tiny, about ten in two tracks inside each bearing housing. They appear to be just sitting in a line together in a track with no lube. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
