Philip Bloom's first test

Jan i would much rather you send a af100 ASAP to Mark aka plasmapm or whatever his name is on this forum. he's the other expert with a good following who is bipartisan and was a user of 7d/5d until gh1 hack during which time he was one of the first to run full blown resolution tests on his video series that proved gh1 is resolving far more resolution than 7d

Hi,

The reason I have not sent the camera to any shooter/reviewer is that the camera is not ready. All of these images that first draw great responses and then deep pixel analysis really drive me a little crazy. I have given about a year and a half of my life to the development of this camera and to have it brought down by a premature review feels virtually heartbreaking. It will be what it will be, I cannot control it. I am going on vacation to Italy tomorrow so I am going to be even more removed. Am not taking computer, promised my travel mate that it would not be a working vacation. ;-) Hoping to chill and have fun.

My review cameras arrive in later November.

Best,

Jan

Jan who cares do you realize this camera is probably already sold out on pre-order? These tiny reviews are not going to dent it it will probably break sales records and you're going to be rich, let's hope panny gives you commission of some sort LOL.

But seriously on that note, Jan can you PLEASE tell us how many of these things you guys are going to be rolling out in the first wave? Will I need to pre-order one in order to get it any time in 2011? Or will I be able to walk into B&H on december 27 and take one off the shelf or even in january?

Jan has stated many times before that if you want one, and you don't pre-order one, that you will most likely not be able to get one until January or even later.

thanks. i keep asking her the same question in over 3 threads now over the past 4 weeks and I never seemed to have gotten a reply but I may have been missing the replies and forgetting about which threads i asked them in.

is this true jan? say it ain't so. just don't have the $ to pre-order it yet

edit: well how long til people stop taking pre-orders? I may be able to pre-order it in mid december or something...is this possible

Jan have a good trip you have earned a vacation, and even if the Af-100 gets no better you have done a great Job enjoy yourself !

Jan,

Have a great vacation! You have already done more for the panasonic community than all the others combined. Like all the previous ground breaking panasonic gear, we all know the the AF100 will eventually find it's home, and allow professionals to actually make a living using it. In the end it's just a tool... an affordable, home run at that!

Frankly if you don't pre-order now you will not see it until January end.

Rather than focus on the shortcomings of a prototype, why not focus on the possibilities?

Yep. I see a very nice camera coming our way that can be both: a real workhorse and a wonderful toy. It seems to have if not all then most of the features we missed with dslr-cams. The price is reasonable. It's rather small and versatile. We can attach a lot of lenses to it. And besides a strange design from an aesthetical point of view, the handling seems to be extremely good. So I think it may have the possibility to open a whole new segment in the market. And I am rather sure to have a lot of fun with it and hope to get mine early December.

And besides what pixel-peepers and codec-sniffers may find objectionable about a not yet finished camera (and even where they may be right at times): There is a price / performance relation - at least in the real world - and for me this relation seems to be okay if not truly great from what I have seen.

But maybe that is because I am "old school" and for me a tool needs to fit definable requirements rather than being a "wonder weapon" that fits all and every demand....... ;-)

"Af-100 is a GREAT camera. Not a DSLR killer as touted by some, but really very good. Read my review this weekend with footage!! "

hopefully he means that in the way that it's nota killer due to price range... That you pay for what you get and those who cannot afford the AF100, the DSLR is still the best bang for the buck.

No, Philip probably alluded to two of my articles

and the follow up: http://frankglencairn.wordpress.com/2010/09/21/is-vdslr-really-about-to-extinct-i-think-so/

For motion production the AF100 will be far beyond the capabilities of DSLRs at a very reasonable price. Shaping up to be a sweet camera.

Skew on a wide but not on a tele? It's possible, but it depends on the relative magnification of the object. If you're panning very quickly on a wide shot, and slowly on a tele, you could get that result.

I did a skew test on a prototype AF100, and it is substantially reduced as compared to other cameras that I have available to test with. No real numbers until I can test a production or production-candidate model, but the difference was substantial and quantifiable.

It was a misunderstanding. The comment about the long Nikon was about the physical aethstetic of the camera compared to putting some of his shorter primes.

Common phil. You have the AF100, which means you are not allowed to sleep, take breaks, bathe, or anything else that doesn't involve shooting, testing, and uploading the footage 5 minutes ago ;)

philip said he will be uploading all footage this weekend. fortunately in england time this weekend starts in a few ho urs.....but he may mean sunday who knows
