Philip Bloom's first test

Hmmmm.. Weird! I'm kind of unimpressed. I don't see any banding or any artifacts but I don't like how the highlight rolls off. And there's loads of oversaturation on the edges of the light's. Maybe that's just Vimeo compression though?

Lol. Yes, and it's a quick a dirty shoot and post. And web streaming. But that's at 3200 ISO! On a real video camera! Stunning. The world of video cameras will never be the same.

I'm reserving my judgment for the color and highlight rendition for another test. I'm just happy to see a fairly clean 3200 ISO test.

Highlight rendition? I think Phil was showing that with the AF100 you can blow your highlights out completely ..... with a match and have a fairly clean shot at very high gain. At 3200 ISO, it looks about as clean as my 5D at around 1200. Also not sure of the WB used. But Im thinking this could be cleaner if it wasnt so on the red side.

Seems we might starting getting some tidbits flowing through whilst Philip has camera in hand.

if you can call a compressed mp4 native.. sure

It might not be recompressed. As far as I know, vimeo doesn't reprocess h264 footage on upload. And, as the AVCHD footage IS h264... it could/should very well be native.

EDIT: Actually, it does have to be recompressed since he put the stuff before and after (text) and such. Bummer.

Id like to be clarified by his statements its cleaner at 3200iso than a 5dmkii, but not as sensitive.
Pretty contradicting since iso is a standard and all cams should perform similarly in sensitivity at similar iso.

If its cleaner at 3200 then it is much sensitive.

Am I missing something? Overall, it's kind of impressive, seeing as it's being tasked the way it is, but no banding? I'm seeing banding all over the place. (especially around the flame and his fingertips) and whats up with the purple and blue around the match? Is that the oversaturation you're talking about? The dark areas and the lack of noise looks good though.

I'm also a little worried about the lack of sensitivity. The camera has a DR stretch mode. I wonder if that was on or not?

Still, these are all pre-production models. Bloom said in his blog that he'll be going to Japan next month to test a real production model. As far as I know thats the only test I'll take 100% seriously until all of us get to play with it.

PS anyone know if that little shotgun mic is going to ship with the camera or not? If not, is there any internal mic in the camera?

Why is it that everyone who has the camera posts these "quick and dirty" tests? If you don't have sufficient time with the camera, why post any footage at all? What a waste of time...and it gets the boards in such a frenzy:

USER 1: "Why did I pre-order this camera?!?!"
USER 2: "Don't be an idiot! It's just compressed test footage and he only had 30 seconds with it!"
USER 3: "I've decided - the DP is just doesn't know how to frame/light/etc and the camera is God's gift to the world."

and so on.

I know Phillip Bloom is a tester of equipment and a good DP, but surely you people have better things to do...like, oh I dunno...shoot? Than to pick apart a couple hour test.

I am NOT suggesting that any of the people operating the camera are bad at what they do. In fact, I congratulate them for having achieved a level of success in their career that Panasonic deems them appropriate testers. However, I do think it is a horrible decision to put the camera in anyone's hand before its finished...that's just asking for trouble.

Because I have just got off a plane from the US. I have barely any time with the camera. I am tired. I need to go to bed and everyone wants to see something. Hence, a quick and dirty test. I will be doing my proper filming on Thursday. My only fully day with the camera. Surely quick and dirty is better than nothing at all?

yes there is a crappy internal mic...
