Philip Bloom's first test

But that doesn't make sense?

How can there be more skew with a wide lens with objects close up, while a longer lens exhibits less skew? That's just backwards....

exactly my point i thought skew is present far more in a longer lens. i barely get any skew with wide lens on GH1 but pop in the kit lens at 140 and move it a tad and it'll skew.

unless he just tested it more violently at the short end than he did at the long who knows. point is who cares, why is it 'worrysome' as someone said that this cam has skew? It's a CMOS sensor it will have skew 100% fact. The RED ONE has skew, everyone knows that, you will never get rid of it without global shutter so what are people expecting zero skew or something?

it's worrysome, but more confusing, because the logic doesn't make sense to me. That's all. Wider lens should not skew as much as longer lens, so it's most likely what you suggested.

I believe the reason skew seems worse on longer lenses is because the subjects generally take less time to cross the frame as in wider shots, but if the subject is close enough to the wide angle lens to cross the frame equally fast, there should be just as much skew.

Perception of skew is going to depend a lot on what is upright (or not upright) within the frame. A wide, panning shot of a stand of pine trees is going to really call attention to itself where a longer lens move across the same, but proportionally larger subject, will appear less skewed.

Because the camera isn't 100% final, any video posted now isn't showing what the final product is able to do. Thus, I think I can safely say that whatever we see today, the final will have to be equal to OR better than today's footage. It's only logical that if Panasonic can improve on it, they will, BUT it it has reached the limit, than it's the same. Given that there are so many parameters to work on, a better image is more likely.

sorry Bob but I gotta disagree with you. Barry Green himself said when he first tested the AF100 at the expo that there's potential for the final image to be WORSE in some ways than the prototype when he was referencing dynamic range. He said that he tested it at 10.5 stops of dynamic range and that there was a possibility that yes the final sensor will have the same or even MORE, but there is also the possibility that in the final iteration of the sensor the engineers will be forced to play it conservative and scale it BACK some in order to reduce noise, etc. So with that same mentality in mind, there is always the possibility that to give it a more pleasing image, less noise, etc, there are certain things that could be dialed back for the final release and as such the image may be WORSE than what we currently see. Probably not super likely but not an impossibility either if you follow this logic.

bloom where are you dude the whole world is waiting. We've all been slapping f5 at your blog for the past 8 hours. It's getting night time over there across the pond I hope you aren't crapping out on us

Nobody's whining.
exactly we're just giddy and can't wait for the cam and can't wait for the tests. I've already put all my family and friends on notice that they better be ready to pony up some big bucks for me to "borrow" on december 27 and pony up some cash rewards for christmas rather than socks and sweaters. LOL!

Nobody's whining.
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

ok here's my theory: Bloom loved the camera so much he said fu## these tests, he grabbed the cam and high tailed it out of the country. Philip we know you've eloped with the cam cus you can't wait til Dec 27 to have it, we have a police sketch and warrant out for you!

Lol. He's probly holding back until he cuts something really good. I don't blame him. I mean, he knows that thousands are waiting for his verdict/footage.

That and with such good low light at 3200ISO, he's probably doing some night shooting. I would!

Really: I hope he goes out with that camera and with those lenses and chases the night....

The proper order of Bloom's Tweets (feel like I'm debating ancient texts, lol) is everything.

1. Shootingaf100 with @DocuMovie. Currently got 7-14mm lens on. She's an ugly duckling but will pics be swan like? #fb http://yfrog.com/eq9u0j

2. #af100 looks better with bigger lens on it like this Nikon zoom. Skewing is minimal. Hurrah! #fb http://yfrog.com/65jkonj

3. Ok managed to get some nasty skewing with wider lens closer up to object. Better but not perfect #fb #af100

So he wasn't saying that the zoom lens made the skew better. He was saying the zoom lens made the camera look better. Then he posts that he can get nasty skew...

what?? He got skew to show on an CMOS sensor? ???

Skew is a similar problem to "jitter" created when a 35mm film camera is paned faster than the "recommended panning speed", now that we are getting video cameras that look like film we need to remember (or learn) proper "filming" technique. When you move a 35mm film camera too fast the end result can be quite disturbing, there is not one proper speed for panning that is why there are charts for "recommended panning speed" which depend on the cameras frame rate and lens focal length, for example for a 90 degree sweep of a static scene where the frame rate is 24 and the shutter angle is 180 with a 50mm lens then the pan should not be less than 23 sec. while with every thing staying the same but using a 35mm lens then the speed of the pan can increase to 18 sec. and with a 100mm lens it will take 1 min. Panning faster than the "recommended panning speed" will result in a pan full of jitter and quite disturbing to watch. Excessive movement with a CMOS camera creates a Skew or a jello look this can be overcome with proper camera technique, it is up to the camera operator to know the limits of his tools so that he/she can create the best image. Until someone makes a CMOS camera with a global shutter then we will have to put up with skew, even the RED has Skew. Since some cameras are better than others the question should be not if there is skew but how bad is it compared to other CMOS cameras.

I feel like there should be a Super Bowl party at my house right now, but for P Blooms AF100 footage.
