PC/Windows NLE Mess - Jan - what can be done?

Jarred,
my apologies. I was misled by so many posts asking "How do I view the footage?"
As you've rightly said, it's early days for not just the HVX but also the XLH1. I'm not really that interested directly in either but like you I'm peed off over the lack of MXF support in Vegas (apart from the XDCAM variant), why's that, well what we're mighty interested in is the InfinitCam VCR (and camera if we can afford it) from Grass Valley. But shock horror, although it doesn't use DVCProHD natively it does use the same MXF wrapper.
Where we are interested in one or the other of these cameras is for use in conjunction with that VCR, the box isn't cheap but the Zip disks that it uses are, I think it's an ideal partner for either the Panny or the Cannon.
As to all the other FUD floating around about noise etc, did anyone really expect a camera at this price point to be perfect? Anyone seen raw CineAlta footage? It doesn't look too pretty, to be honest if you didn't really know what you were looking at you'd swear the stuff from the Z1 was way better.

Hello, Hello!

Goodness, now haven't we had quite a bit of fighting and name-calling over such a basic thing. Jarred, I'm surprised at you! Even you got into the mud all over this one! There's no worse way to convince people that a platform (or camera, or car, or pet) is the best choice than to phrase things along the line of "Well, once you come to your senses..." or "When you wake up, you'll finally understand." It makes people feel defensive, over nothing.

For a little perspective, I'm dropping into the mix... some film footage! Here's a small excerpt from the BBS Documentary I shot. (The movie site itself is at http://www.bbsdocumentary.com):

http://bbsdocumentary.dreamhost.com/machines.mov (4mb)

As it is, my intention is stick it out with Vegas, and I'm sure things will settle out. I prefer my nice commodity hardware, especially storage, and I'm not really into Macs, having gone in and out of that world before. That said, of course, there's nothing really stopping me from picking one up as one might pick up a firestore drive or some other solution; it's a free country!

Video people are silly sometimes.

LOL. If you can't afford a 2gig G5..I doubt you can affford a quad AMD box. And you still are stuck with windows:embarasse

 us film guys ........

But...we hang out here just as much as the video ones.....so panny MUST be doing something right.

Well, I don't do this stuff as my sole livelihood. I'm sure I'd be more uptight about certain things if I was. Which of course is why it's not. I went to film school, got my degree, and was quite content to go into video games and systems administration, and then shoot stuff on my terms.

But I've seen quite a few discussions in the month I've been cruising this site (and others) where I see people either:

Swinging the big numbers game ("No, you say it's 405vebbles and it's 202.5vebbles doubled")
Dropping the "Come back when you're a professional" P-bomb
Never being satisfied about anything, ever, even once.

Of course, I should be aware of all this, having done a documentary on bulletin boards, right? :)

So...are people grumbling because they ordered/purchased the camera, assuming Vegas would be able to handle DVCPRO-HD or mxf, and now realizing it may not....?
DVCPRO-HD has been around for 6 years. It's not new. Could vegas ever handle varicam or cinealt footage before? Why would it now?

I guess the reason people cutting on mac are saying "hey, checkout FCP!" is because it can handle almost every type of video worth shooting (and some that aren't) ....uncompressed SD, DV50, DV, DV100, HDV (in some forms...not sure about 24F or 30F) mpeg2, uncompressed HD, AVI's etc etc.

I would really, really listen to Jarred & Barry here....they seem to be so revered on all topics......except edit applications.

There is no comparison between Vegas and FCP.

sorry if i sound a little agitated.. I'm just getting tired of people going off thinking they know the entire story when they dont even take a minute to read what comes in the box.

Jarred, I agree we all should just calm down and quit spreading bad information.
You said you tried Avid and it didn't work. Which version? What hardware configuration? That is a rather broad statement. Sounds like your bitching about something you don't know anything about.

"Primer" was cut on cheap ass PC with Premier 5.

And the filmmaker (Sean Carruth) really regretted it. Here's an example of his comments (from Filmmaker Magazine):

Carruth: I cut it on Adobe Premiere on a home system. I probably shouldn’t say anything negative, but it’s not something I would do again. It’s just not a program made for that at all.

Filmmaker: What about doing the sound editing and mix?

Carruth: Premiere is not great for sound, so I had to use a lot of different programs. I used Sonic Boundary and Soundchords to clean stuff up.

Elsewhere I read that he had COMPLETE crashes of his system where he lost the ENTIRE project while editing. That's not fun.

I cut my feature on Final Cut Pro on Mac OS 9.2 (not considered a "stable" operating system) and I only had three crashes in a year and never lost a frame - just restart and keep working.

ummmm - if he was cutting a feature film - he should have a process in place so a crash NEVER causes loss of a project - backups nightly - weekly sent off site. All can be done with free easy to use tools. Silly him.

sorry - just an aside

everyone remember to never only have one copy of any data that is important EVER.

Ah the never-ending workflow debate.
I've been working with FCP since it came out so I'm kinda sticking to that. All those hours getting to know it inside out have got to pay off. :)
I know avid good aswell. Nice if you need basic cutting fast, but I feel Avid has to drag along their old design to satisfy long existing costumers. Once you get into FX avid is not fun...
The rest I don't know, except Premiere. But god knows I won't be touching that again. :)
Basicly, look at what you need and try and talk to people who are experienced with apps you don't know yourselves. And other then that, it's a free world indeed.

I remember days and days and days of convincing Esperman to get a mac with final cut pro. We had been through so many different PC applications together it's crazy. Then I went to FCP 2.0. I was early, but it was way better at the time than Premiere or Cinestream (which is what we were using then)

When OSX came out it really changed things and I've gotten a lot better with it. The funny thing is it's like someone who owns a Tivo. You can tell people how great it is, but until they actually sit down and use it, they don't really know what they are missing.

A Mac is just another computer. It's not a closed proprietary system. If anything there is more freedom in it, because you don't have to use antispyware, you don't need antivirus, you don't need to be on top of security patches that might screw up your editing station (although that did happen to me once on my mac)

FCP on a mac is very good. I've used Vegas, Premiere, Avid express, speed razor, digisuite with speed razor, and out of all of them, I am more productive with FCP. It may not be for everyone though, it just works the way that I do. And I've been able to stick with it for 5 years, whereas on a PC, I switched from app to app trying to find one that works well, consistant and which allows me to get things done. I didn't find it until I switched to mac back in 2001.

I budgeted and planned on shooting a Varicam feature and edit on my laptop over firewire with the 1200, but then this HVX came out and it made my powerbook purchase EVEN more of a right purchase.

All of you guys saying, "Oh panasonic released P2 cards, now I need a Reader and a new PC editing application" It just fell into my workflow like a victoria secret angel.

I have no extra cost involved, which is the reason this to me is the perfect camera.

Way to jinx it !

We may enjoy these freedoms now but as Macs gain popularity we're bound to suffer those pains as well.

Nono, luckily they are ridiculously overpriced for most people.
I galdly leave them thinking just that... :)

Hell...took days and days and days just to talk me into shooting DV!! LOL

Yea that's right. Macs are too expensive and burn out after like a year or two anyway. And for that year or two they're totally unreliable. Don't waste your time or money!

They also aren't worth creating a worm or 'Love' strain for anyway.

I build my own systems - not a problem. I built a Dual Opteron system last year for rendering for $1200.

impressive. minus windows, that's like $1000 for the hardware.

I just upgraded my PC to a 64 bit athon, although I only have win 2000 so it's not taking any advantage of it, but hey it renders my 3-D app really fast now, compared to my PIII 866!

come to think of it, it probably would have cost the same amount of money to cross platform upgrade my software...

Considering PC parts can be migrated forward, saving you a lot of potential reinvestment every time you upgrade (case, power supply, HD's, etc.) it's understandable how someone could afford an upgrade to a new PC but not to buy an entirely new Mac.
