i think you are misinterpreting what is happening with the intel hardware. Just because intel is producing the hardware doesnt mean it is the SAME hardware used in a PC. It will prob still be locked down. In addition, FCP would need to be modified and recompiled to work on the windows OS - using direct x and/or whatever APIs are available on a windows platform.

Wrong my dear. It will be the SAME hardware as in a PC. What will be done is to recompile the MacOS so it runs on an Intel processor. Apple has been doing this already for more then three years to get a smooth transition. There is an OS X 10.4 version out that runs on such a platform and it has been distributed to all interested developers since May 2005.
And YES, this OS X (Intel) will not run on a normal Intel PC. However there are reports on the internet that it has been hacked to run on normal PCs as well.

No, FCP will only be recompiled to run on an OS X for Macs with Intel processors, not to run under Windows. That is the trick.

What you are misinterpreting is that Windows will run on these Intel Macs as it does on any normal PC. I think the technical term for that is "Dual Boot". Both worlds in parallel! I've seen it an a developer's IntelMac just recently.

how about a fairly new intel box - will that work?

I dont understand the strategy they have with allowing that.

Either way FCP wont on top of win. So you would have to boot into mac and then you have all the file imcompatility issues that come up if you have other apps (AE, avid etc) on the win os.

Only if it's made by Apple

The point is that you switch to mac, and if there is something that doesn't work on mac, you boot into windows only for that application.

Since Mac Os X there have been very minimal file incompatibilities, and most that do show up, are because people don't think. Instead of exporting out a Final Cut Pro video file, export a quicktime. Same wrapper, same format, same everything but it's playable on windows. Also, if you do with mac and final cut pro, you don't need Avid anymore. AE works just fine, and I bet you could get a cross platform upgrade for cheap, or some companies off them for free.

It sort of like, if I have a Pages Document (mac word processor), I should send a windows person a .doc file instead of the .pages file. All I have to do is hit export word doc.

No. Mac OSX (Intel) will not be designed to run on common intel boxes. However, Apple has yet to disclose how they want to achieve that. Taking into account that all developer versions have been hacked so far to run on any intel box rest assured that this will happen again.

Gives Apple a chance to build cheaper and faster Macs then they were able to do with the PowerPC architecture. And to better penetrate the corporation market, being bi-compatible.

Not necessarily, with the Mac being the master of compatibilty already today. I am working on a mixed network and we juggle files of all formats back and forth without any glitches. works just wonderfully.

compatilbility works great within your network where you can control how and what the users do - prob is when you involved other people - how many times has a mac user sent me a .doc file that I cant open on my pc or a stuffit file that I cannot unstuff on my PC.

I am a technology specialist so i know it can be done but in reality so many issues come up when dealing with the general public.

Wait - i think i just disproved myself - i guess i am saying if i dual boot and maintain the proper quality control on my files I could theoretically use all the apps i want on either OS.

Ok - fine Ill do it but only if i have to --- sigh

im using virtual pc for mac.. to run the windows programs that didnt work for me before.. and its pretty good guys.. much easier to go that way.

I too just go Virtual PC for my Mac, and it runs windows well .. surprisingly well ...

But I own a Quad Core G5 and the computer is reading my processor as an x86 533Mhz processor ... so don't expect to do any heavy intensive tasks with it ...

I have that all installed on a PC of mine upstairs. It boots up and runs quite well.

"And to better penetrate, be bi-compatible."

I heard that!

So that means you could run your Windows version
of AE on your bi-compatible MAC?

Great Info, PKraft!! I am quite an optimist about running a version of Mac OS on PC. To the question about what might be their strategy I belive it is not so well hidden: Apple, hopefully (Help god, pls!!) would try to compete with MS on the OS market for PC's, hope I am not dead wrong. In any case, Mac OS on Intel processor is a major step in this direction. If the beautiful scenario

Intel PC + [genuine] Mac OS + pleasantly working FCP

obtains in the next year or two I, and believe a lot of people from PC world would be most happy. Btw, I am not that sure that the virtual machine is that bad a choice. Jarred and other people mentioned that had VPC installed on Mac, I guess, so why not reverse and instal virtual PC, Mac OS on it and FCP? Given that you have enough ang good PC hardware and given that the machine and the OS recognise it properly this would be a solution worth considering.

It's in the best interest of all parties concerned (Panasonic, NLE companies, users) to make this happen. So why is it not? (In Vegas's case, the Sony conspiracy, but it Sony really going to sacrifice Vegas installed based to protect camera sales?).

Yea but its weird because somehow i doubt Sony makes that much money off of HDV products. How many FX1's ad Z1' could they sell? i bet it only makes up less than .5% of their total profits, now, think again, how many people honestly buy professional NLE's. Not too many. I dont see the reason for them to hold off adding support. Then again, maybe thats exactly the reason, they dont think too many HVX's will be sold, so its not worth the R&D.

Having worked for Sony for a number of years, I can tell you that applying engineering/math-related logic to Sony's moves is a dead end.

Anyone remember when Apple tried to have other people make hardware for them? Disaster! They will NOT have OSX for any pc - only for Apple branded ones.

They didn’t pay attention to the licensed hardware manufacturer that was Apples fault.
OSX is based on Free BSD now. Darwin openS will make quick work of drivers.

I love OSX I just hate "Apples hardware manufacturer approach" its a bold face Lie
More so now that they are not PPC

WRAL in Raleigh, NC The first station to Broadcast in HD will be installing Edius system in the news dept beginning in the next few weeks.

I have used an Edius HDV NX system since March and find it to be a very good system. I shoot HDV With the FX! Edit with Edius 3.5 dual core 3.4 2gig ram 500 sata raid 0.
When my HVX 200 is shipped I will be upgrading to Edius Broadcast (499.00)

I am a former Toaster Flyer, Adobe 1.5.1 Cineform Aspect, and Apple FCP 4.0 user
