GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

I haven't been cleared to say anything definitive about this.

All I can say today is that you will not be disappointed.

Illya,

As it stands now the DVX200 can be matched perfectly to the GH4 using the “Like GH4” scene file provided by Panasonic, I’m wondering if Panasonic will offer a specific scene file for the DVX200 or one of their other traditional video cameras that will match the GH5? This was a big incentive for me to buy a DVX200. See the info noted below.

DVX200 Check List For Multi Camera Shoots

Tests made on 5-19-16 proved that both the Panasonic AG-DVX200 and the GH4 cameras could be matched perfectly for multi camera shoots, see the following filmed at Encore Broadcast. https://vimeo.com/167443202

DVX200 Settings;

Make sure that you have Firmware Version 1.65 installed in your DVX200 camera and set the Color Palette to NATURAL then install the Panasonic Scene File commonly referred to as “Like GH4” this should be installed so that it replaces Scene File 4 in your DVX200 camera. Then always use Scene File 4 for multi camera shoots that include a GH4. Noted below are the actual settings for the “Like GH4” Scene File.

MASTER DETAIL +10
DETAIL CORING 1
SKIN TONE DTL OFF
V DETAIL LEVEL 0
KNEE APE LEVEL 3
RB GAIN CONTROL SETTING
CROMA LEVEL 0
CROMA PHASE 0

GH4 Settings;

When our tests were conducted the GH4 camera used for the test had Body Firmware Version 2.4 and the Photo Style was NATURAL.

Good question. I have no information about this, but will ask.

I hope the GH5 will be more configurable than GH4. Now there are many useful things impossible to assign to FN-buttons in GH4 leaving FN-buttons unused. Also the red video button and useless EV-button should release for better use (programmable).

I’m a big fan of Panasonic GH cameras, first a GH2, then a GH3, now a GH4 and soon a GH5. That being said I’m also a realist and can appreciate the value of owning a full-featured traditional video camera. In that regard Panasonic recently gave us a gift, a “Like GH4 Scene File” see yesterdays post at 5:53AM where I’ve provided details on this and how it can be used to match the Panasonic DVX200 to the Panasonic GH4.

Previously if you wanted cameras that matched you bought two identical cameras. It was either that or struggle trying to match whatever you had in post. Fortunately someone at Panasonic decided to bridge the Professional/Consumer Products divide and create a “Like GH4 Scene File” now we have the best of both worlds, a great A-Cam the DVX200 and a fantastic B-Cam the GH4.

Thanks Panasonic and we hope for more of this kind of support in the future, perhaps a “Like GH5 Scene File” for the DVX200 or its successor.

There's an EV button? I've owned this camera for over two years and never even knew about it!

It is called a EC comp button too (exposure compensation, the +- button near the shutter).

It is logical you dont know it because it has no use never. It is just a decoration. What a waste of the best placed button.

Any chance that it will have some of the same high end specs as this camera? DJI ZenMuse-X5s

...Most of it sounds likely, though I don't expect RAW recording with the GH5. ( the DJI camera requires a SSD drive to record RAW, and I can't see the GH5 supporting internal SSD recording )

Internal RAW recording is not out of the question if it's compressed. The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera records RAW to an SD card with 3:1 compression and it looks great.

That is for HD. 4k greatly increases the data rate of raw. 4x as much for example. 260MB/S or 2080mbps. That is well over 2x the data rate of 4k ProRes422 HQ which is already pushing the limits of what SDHC cards can do.

A scaled HD raw mode on the GH5 would require a crop of the sensor much like what the ETC mode currently does on the GH3 and GH4. You can't really scale raw since the nature of raw is unprocessed data from the sensor. That is why cameras like RED can only do a lower resolution mode as a crop. Also keep in mind from what we know the GH5 does scale the 4k video since it is said to not have a crop factor. You can't have a 20MP sensor shoot 4k video with a full sensor without a form of scaling. That means no possibility for raw. It could do a 4k crop mode just like the GH4 but again the data would be too massive for a SDHC card or any other compact affordable media right now.

This is also likely part of the reason why we haven't seen BMD create a 4k micro camera yet. It isn't as much about the sensor capabilities but how they could record 4k raw to media on those cameras. HD sensors make sense right now for raw capture since the data can be manageable as that resolution.

What it would be nice to see however is the ability for the GH5 to send a raw signal to a external recorder that can handle raw recording. It would still require a 4k crop of the sensor but then Panasonic could let an external recorder handle the raw recording which would make complete sense.

A device like the Inferno could be used to handle the raw recording up to DCI 4096x2160
