GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

I've never seen anything so soft coming out of the GH5, it looks like a VHS recording. I couldn't get anything that soft out of my GH5 if I tried. Further, the GH5 is a sharper camera than the GH4. I too had the RX10iii and in my A/Bs the GH5 resolved more detail than the RX10iii with less of in-camera sharpening artifacts that plague the RX10iii.

My suspicion, based on your posted video with the 14-140 lens (which was good), is that a) there's something wrong with your 100-400 lens or b) there's something wrong with your focusing with that lens.

f/8 should be fine but I would not go any narrower.
Could you upload one of the unaltered GH5 clips to Vimeo?

For now i have no vimeo space, all the buildings in the clips were a good distance away, there is no problem with my focusing with the 100-400mm,its plain to see on my TVs and pc that even with the 14-140mm lens on my GH5 the RX10 MKiii resolves more detail https://vimeo.com/214202000 i showed how on the GH4 with the 100-400mm and RX10 iii the results were similar unlike with the GH5.

I guess the rest of us do not believe the output you got. So either there is something wrong with your GH5 or the way you have focused it for those shots. You might try using touch focus in manual with peaking on low, I have mine set for RED, and for those shots the whole scene should light up red when in focus. Set recording to UHD 150Mbps and see what comes. If it is still just as bad then I would return and get it fixed as it should definitely be better than the GH4. What have you got the scene file set to? Have you tried the different scene files ? The WB and contrast is definitely different on your last vimeo files. As lots have found with the autofocus issue having a camera with lots of controls can make a difference positive and negative.

You could use Google Drive to load the original clip. We are trying to help you analyze the problem.

I have this lens and have no issues wrt sharpness. Overall I like the lens although I do not like the excessive flair and stiff zoom control.

Cary, is it possible you could post an image so that we could see what you are experiencing with the GH5/100-400mm? Thank you.

The GH5 clips are all lighter, with lower contrast than the Sony's, which will give the appearance of lower res. What "style" were you using in the GH5 - eg Standard, Cine-D, etc? And did you make any offsets in your "style" choice regarding contrast, sharpening, NR?

That is true but I do not agree that is an explanation to the differences.

I downloaded the clip and compared their histograms, both the GH5 and Sony have hardly any shadows and the contrast difference is there but is minimal.
Making the levels equal did not make any significant changes.

What we really need is the original unaltered clip, but it seems flinty is not going to give that one to us.

If anyone would like to see what the GH5 & 100-400 lens combo should look like, here are just a few of the many examples available if you search. Razor sharp and unquestionably superior to the RX10iii. After seeing these, if the damn thing weren't so big & heavy, I'd order one. There is something radically wrong with Flinty's setup.

What do you meen an unaltered clip a still, the clips are unaltered,i have no vimeo space,it was an overcast day when filmed. When i am out filming wildlife there is no time to spend ages setting up each shot but the shots in the test time was spent.Google Drive to load the original clip i have never done that but will .

Flinty, have you ever tried a different copy of your lens to ensure there's nothing wrong with yours? If all 100-400 lenses looked as bad as yours, I would have had an easy time finding many examples similar to yours. Quite the contrary. I couldn't find any.

Some of the videos I linked were of wildlife, where it's reasonable to assume that they were taken at or near the full 400mm. The videos I linked are all dramatically different than yours, much sharper. There are many others, I just linked the first ones that came up.

Everyone here is just trying to help you to get to the bottom of what looks like very different results.

As i showed elsewhere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qgVAnZIYC0 with the lens on my previous GH4 ,poor GH4 focus compared to the GH5, what do others think of the sharpness, even on MY GH5 i am not saying its VHS quality by a long shot just the RX10 resolves more as it does with all my lenses.

Your Vimeo video was processed by an NLE (Vegas?) and re-encoded, an unaltered clip is a clip that comes straight from the camera, it could be trimmed but it is not re-encoded or processed otherwise.
Perhaps something went wrong when you processed your GH5 clip in the NLE?

It still looks very soft at the maximum focal length on the GH4. The GH5 is a sharper camera, so there's no way, assuming no defects in lens and/or camera mating, the GH4 would be sharper. The GH5 video you posted may be the softest I've ever seen from a GH5 with any lens...assuming it was properly focused.

Since the other videos were, I'm sure, shot at 400mm (at least in parts), I can only assume there's something sub par about your lens. Flinty, it's simply not unusual to have a bad copy of a lens. It happens all the time.

As for resolving power, my GH5 certainly had better resolution than my RX10iii. The GH5 doesn't have the significant in-camera sharpening that the RX10iii and that may be what you're seeing. If you like the RX10iii better for long shots, then just use that. We're just saying something is not right with your setup and my suspicion, based on the excellent results others are getting with this lens, it may well be your lens.

Yup. The sensor's resolving power is not the limiting factor in these shots...something is off before the light hits the sensor. With everything working as it should, the GH5's resolving power (no OLP, sophisticated subsampling) will beat the other cameras every time. (Owner of a GH3, 2 GH4's and a GH5)

I have no GH5 yet. This is from Imaging Resource GH5 shooting report. This is from 4:3 ratio (about 4900 pix wide) but even better is full sensor width (5184 x3456) 6k mode which is actually 5.2k and 3:2 ratio.
