I just didn't know much about him i guess. I read up on Hemingway to.

Thats quite a sad story.

No worries. I don't know a whole lot about him either. For all I know, I've got the rights to the great Poe empire.

Edgar Allen Poe is credited with creating the murder mystery with The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would later base much of Sherlock Holmes on Dupin, Poe's super sleuth, and even use Watson as Holmes's narrator just as Poe did with Dupin's sidekick.

The mysteries don't hold up as well (IMHO) as the Gothic horror shorts / narrative poems, because they go into excruciating detail not only explaining the means of deduction but by providing metaphors and other examples that illustrate the means of deduction which are also explained in excruciating detail.

His poems are pretty timeless though (again IMHO).

Not that I am advocating a Poe Fest per se, just one of many ideas I threw out there, but the poems would pretty much throw it wide open as they would just suggest a theme (rather than a whole story) as a jumping off point.

... Not that I would suggest people not do the things like the more narrative poems such as The Raven, but almost everyone could find something to loosely base a film on in the lesser known / less narrative poems.

For example ...

SPIRITS OF THE DEAD by Edgar Allen Poe:
Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

Hmmm, my mind has been turning on a variation on "Cask"...

I almost did an adaptation of that for HorrorFest, although I also incorporated Telltale Heart. Those have always been two of my favorite Poe works.

As for NextFest, I think it should be 48 hour film contest with specific obstructions assigned at random or something. Maybe these type of contests are being done a lot lately, but I've always wanted to take a stab at one.

Well then in that case, instead of PoeFest, we could do KoontzFest, because he's a far superior writer of horror than Poe ever was. And if people don't like horror, there's also GrishmanFest, and ClanceyFest. I'm just thinking out loud here though. Just trying to single out all the literature greats.

Two words.
(Which have been used several times over in this thread)

Wow. I bit on that one hard. :cheesy:

Rights just seem to be a concept that even accomplished filmmakers around here can't seem to grasp over and over again with, for example, Macgregor's work being DQ'ed in Dramafest for using Seinfeld audio clips on a TV in the background.

I just had a thought. What if we get rid of a theme and just have everyone make whatever genre film they want to, but with certain guidelines or obstructions to show that the filmis made for the festival and not a pre-existing film. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I can already hear the mods evil laughter as they prepare the links on the film download page...

westfest would be sick.

french new wave-fest (shorts heavily influenced by Truffaut, Godard and their ilk)

post-deconstructionist-fest (?? what)

docu-fest would be badass.

2 of these are "ironic jokes" that in hindsight (after viewing what I typed) aint very funny
