New Cinema EOS camera announcement

The 4K camera will shoot in cropped APS-H mode as stated in Canons own press release but it will have a FF sensor suggesting that it also will shoot stills using the full area of its sensor.

We have to remember that the 5DmkIII is a still camera first and as such vastly superior to the 5DmkII in functions, speed and image quality. That's why I'm getting one. As a bonus it has improved quality and features even in video mode.

Found it !

c series is full frame not aps-c or s35, codec is Motion-Jpeg

I'm sure that is it. Last years press release laid out what was coming in 2012. Then they are shooting with it now. Some where in the LA area and abroad. Getting there short films made for the NAB screening as Canon did the months before the C300 release at Paramount studios. Keep you eye’s out for it, as I’m sure someone is near by with this new “mystery” 4K camera. Oh yeah keep you cell phone cameras ready to take pictures. The rumor sites would love that scoop..

Well if this is true then how much and wouldnt it hurt the c300 if it is anything but expensive

Would you still buy a c300 if this shoots 4k 10bit 4:2:2 and cheaper? The c300 would be a sitting duck.

hmmm ... I think the c dslr will miss out on a whole slew of features that a camcorder like the c300 can offer. Its a camcorder ... I mean that says it all, this is a dslr body. We'll be lucky if they get rid of the mirror and give us an electronic viewfinder and constant waveforms but I doubt it.

Why would the c300 be a "sitting duck"? You do realize the things filmed in HD FAR outweigh things that require 4K. Will this new camera have ND's built in, XLR, SDI, waveforms, peaking, C-log, gen log? Forget 4K for a moment. If the 1Dx had 422 8 bit, would you buy it over the C300 "IF" you have a budget of an HBO mini series? Stay in the broadcast world while you think about that. Do you think Canon planned to sell the C300 at 5Dmk2 levels? Who has the bigger audience? The theatre or the home television?

I wonder if this Cinema Dlsr has a newer processor, like a DVdigic 4. Once Canon gets moving on the video processor, it's game on. DVdigic3 is 3-4 years old and it's really good. My guess would be that this camera will be a XF codec at 422/8bit full frame HD with a windowed 4K. HDMI out with waveform and peaking. No ND's and a module for XLR. Still with DVdigic 3.

Good points but DVdigic 3? Don't think so.

Thats why I'm hoping for DVdigic 4. If this announcement is even a camera, then it's built and has been tested. So I think the c300 would have the DVdigic 4 if it were ready. Therefore, my prediction is DVdigic 3.

A sitting duck.....right now Canon cannot deliver as fast as demand is, because it is a flying duck. And once the C-DSLR comes out it will give us all more options, but it is a different camera. And it won´t be a DSLR priced camera, but C-DSLR priced (5-7k?).

So the C300 will do just fine. From the clips I saw so far it is just so long ahead of any DSLR out there, it will keep selling in the mid-range production landscape and might indeed go higher (TV series).

The landscape is shifting. We just finished a big production with EXs and 7Ds and I talked the producer to use one F3 (we had two C300s on order, but they arrive too late). First they didn´t want to pay the extra price for the F3. Once they saw the rushes they were sold. Next time they will shoot F3 and/or C300 only. It will not take long and the DSLRs won´t be sufficient anymore. Once a client viewer sees the difference he will realize the inferior picture quality of the DSLRs.

I expect the C-DSLR to be much higher in resolution than the current ones (including MK3 and D4 - they look very soft) and finally to have a real codec (XF) or allow 4:2:2 via HDMI. They might even stick in several HDMIs. I would´t expect too much audio-wide, because it is a cinema-tool (while the C300 aims also at the broadcast market) and we will need a dual-system with it. It might have onboard audio, but no proper pre-amp.

Canon is setting up a line of cameras for different uses and users. The 5D is a still cam, the C-DSLR will be a great cine-Cam, the C300 is a great A-Cam/broadcast workhorse and the "C500" might be the 4K-RAW cam we all have been waiting for (but won´t afford ever).

most people dont care about those. have you seen how many dslr/fs100 shooters are out there?

I care about those features thats why i have an af100.

I wouldnt buy either. heheh.
if they cripple the 4k cam with less image control then yes i wouldnt buy that.
4k can be resized. it wont fit all workflows but people always find a workaround if the quality is really good.
I for one wont care about the 4k cam unless it has c-log, 10 bit 4:2:2, 1/3 the price of a c300 then id buy that.

yes sitting duck is a bit harsh but c300 sales definitely is gonna get some hit if they release something like what i said. but maybe thats what they want based on where they positioned the camera which is professional level.

well if its at c300 level of resolution and all c300 features.. why bother with the c300 at all? :)
im not bashing anything im looking at it logically. whats the catch when we get a 5-7k c-dslr with all the bells and whistles of c300?
so i guess my main point is, whatever thats coming out on april is either at the same level of c300 at the same price point or lower priced but crippled. it cant be better than the current cam.

same way i see fs100 is to the f3. ( what im trying to get at )

Well, there will be some technical catches.
We saw an image of something that looks like 5D and has that "C" label on it. So it will be a DSLR.

The C300 is a camcorder, the C-DSLR is a DSLR. Formfactor, audio, stills, cooling/longtermshoots...those are the differences.
If you shoot shorts and commercials only, the DSLR is fine. If you want a camera that is flexible and can also shoot a concert in a hot dancehall in one take....you´ll need a camcorder.

It is not the resolution and the "bells and whistles" of the C300 that makes it what it is (and why i ordered it)...it is the stuff that is basic that DSLRs are missing. Some say it has a $10.000 fan or XLR-input or ND filters. Oh wait...suddenly it is only $3.333 per each feature. Add the codec, add the dual-slot recording, add (VERY IMPORTANT feature) the professional viewfinder, add HD-SDI out and Timecode sync and dare I say the resolution..wow....the list goes on and for some people (like me) suddenly the price is worth it.

I have been shooting world-class free skiing from a helicopter yesterday and the choices were EX, 7D, 5D or F3 (as I said my C300 didn´t arrive in time)...I took the EX, because no way would I judge focus with a DSLR-LCD on such a critical shoot and the F3 has no stabilization on the lenses.

If you need long-shooting-modes and XLR-inputs and all the other stuff then there really is only one cam out there competing...the F3.

The C-DSLR will never be such a versatile camera and it won´t be built for that. I mean I will have my C300 rigged with dual-audio and monitors and recording to the Atomos Samurai, but if I want to use it in a helicopter or just on stage of a rock concert, I can slim it down and still have a viewfinder that allows to check critical focus. And I will record to a proper codec in-cam.

But that doesn´t mean the C-DSLR won´t be in my flight case at christmastime ;-)

EDIT: the FS100 is a great hybrid BTW. If that is in your budget it is definitely a superb cam!

I don't think we've even seen enough of the 5dmk3 to give it a definite judging. Or at least in the hands of a few that could make it truly shine. Heck, I bet they are still turning the sharpness all the way down just out of habit. But there are tons of complaints about it's price at $3500 (just like the $16,000 camera everyone thinks is too expensive). And now without even knowing what this new camera is I'm already seeing judgment of what it should be and for how much. Lets assume it's the 4k xf422 8 bit at $9800. I see pitch forks in the town center! But a camera at $3500 with a pretty unique image? All I see of it are comments of it being so close but yet just not the camera they "hope" for. How much would that camera have cost 5 maybe 6 years ago?

Don't expect to be blown away April 15th. Expect another camera and decide if its for you and your business model. Wash, rinse, repeat...
