New Cinema EOS camera announcement

... It sort of reminds me of an early competitor to Photoshop that many of us Multimedia Wonks used in the early 90's - Debabelizer did exactly what you are describing. I wonder if Adobe is working on a technology convergence. Something the Old Macromedia would have called, Author in One Format & edit in Many? ...

OT: Ah, those were the days! (One of the Technotes I wrote for MM back in the day.):

[Shudder!]

:-)

Just a thought for those "underwhelmed by the C300 specs on paper" - why not get out and actually use one. I wont try and sway you with my thoughts on it - just suggest you try.

It is clear now that the 5DM2 was an inadvertent revolution that Canon seems utterly determined not to repeat. They behave like a company with no competition. After the dissapointing 1DX, C300, and 5D3 announcements I have little hope or excitement left in my reserves for whatever they announce next. Hype does not spring eternal. Three sputtering balloons, one after another, each one flatulently deflating on arrival, is enough to convince me that Canon's hype machine is full of hot air.

It was not a disappointment to me at all!

Speak for yourself.

People tend to be negative, even before they know what it is that's coming. These are usually the people that will never buy these cameras, A; because they usually only have $800 to spend, and B; because they can't do anything with them even if their lives depended on it. These complainers are not professional shooters, they are professional complainers. It's just noise and trash that fill these forums.

I for one, am very happy that Canon, Red, Sony, Panasonic, Arri etc.. are giving us all of these different tools to work with.

Stop bit chin', because your riff raff gets old real quick!

Disappointing....I guess that is disappointing to you. A lot of people here in town(Hollywood) are looking forward to the 1DX for it's attributes. The first 4 C300s that went out of our store went straight to features as the "A" camera. The 8th camera went the HBO show "Luck". The 5D III is obviously aimed at the still shooters and we are getting a good amount of pre-orders...Canon has said there will be a series of Cinema EOS cameras for the future with cameras hitting different levels for different applications. The 5D II was a wonderful accident on the video side and Canon is capitalizing on that by providing many options now and in the future, depending on your needs.

I suppose the 4:2:0 (if it happens) will be the way Canon "limits" the camera, as they did with the no clean live HDMI out from the 5DM3.

The more I hear about both the 5DM3 and the cinema DSLR mystery cam, the more I like them. Both will be very useful in their own way. In my case, I might buy a 5DM3, and the (probably more expensive) cinema DSLR would likely be a rental item.
They won't be ble to compete with 4:2:0, why bother to release 4K then? Moreover, it will be coming from their cinema division, right?

Well, they need to sell glass...

Found it !

c series is full frame not aps-c or s35, codec is Motion-Jpeg

The model will be equipped with a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and, enabling the recording of 4K video* (at a frame rate of 24P, with Motion-JPEG compression), will make possible the type of exceptional image quality and sublime imaging expression to be expected from the next generation of "EOS Movies."

Am I missing something in this announcement? Where in it does it say it will DEFINITELY be a part of the EOS Cinema lineup? From the article it seems like it's pure speculation on the part of Engadget staff...I may be naive (in which case, please correct me), but if NAB is for broadcasting and Canon's broadcast approved camera is the XF300/XF305, who's to say it won't be a video camera still? Maybe an XF with interchangeable lens (XL H1 upgrade?)

What you're seeing is a frenzy of confusion in the rez war waters occupied by price averse tech entitled rather whine than create do nothings brought upon by Canons rather quick delivery of all the bounty one could ask for.

I think it was already mentioned - my memory is not precise but it may have been during the announcement. My understanding is that the c series DSLR's would shoot 4k to jpeg. I don't know if this would be still jpeg with 2nd system audio or motion jpegs with audio.

edit: this would make sense as the technology already exists to shoot and record 24 x 4k jpegs per second to a card and we would get 8bit 4:4:4 RGB

MPEG-4 AVC standard supports up to 4k 4:4:4 14 bit high profile encoding at 300Mbps, 60+fps.

I believe Luck shoots primarily on the Alexa. They're probably looking at the C300 to replace the 5DII and 7D they use on certain shots.

@Razz, yes but I never mentioned AVC, canon doesn't use the AVC portion of h264, instead they record h264 to a quicktime container

for c-dslr
Motion jpeg is iFrame, separately compressed jpegs, no temporal (across time) compression

Agreed! If Canon enters the 4K camera market, they will do it at 4:2:2 and as for the "bit" I would hope it would be 10.

They already stated as per my earlier link Motion Jpeg is iFrame, 4:4:4 and 8 bit
(assuming specs haven't changed since Nov 3 press release)

Well, 4:2:2 at least... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

That's the Canon C-division standard as of now.

:) yeh I was meaning the bit. I would love it if it were 10 bit as well. AFAIK jpeg (and therefore Motion jpeg) is either 8 bit, 16bit or 24 bit
