Suppose I should work on that poster.

Got the score back from the composer, the guy's amazing. Mother grabbin Mandolin.

Actually, my mother gave me that mandolin!

Thanks for the compliment! I've never really done that sort of simple strummy thing in a film like in the middle of Kinship. I'm glad you're liking it. But really, it's the opening with that mandolin that really rocks! Go make another movie that I can do that on the whole time. :) I can't wait to see the final, and maybe a long cut with the river scene.

Nice stills and banner, wheres the poster? I just caught this thread now, i like the title and location. Lookin' very good.

Hey Chris, I'm Anthony.

This was really endearing. I thought the acting was great too. The music added to the story as it wasn't cheesy or ver the top. You brought it in, in al the right places. Overall the story was great and the extra twist was a bonus. It just worked well. My one catch would be I think he would have been torn up taking that metal plate off. He would have been more emotional. The joking around felt REALLY natural and that's really what sold me. The younger one had an Emilo Estevez via Young Guns feel to his performance which is a major plus. Nice work.

Anthony, I really appreciate the comments. You may thank Randin Graves for doing such a fine job with the score.

I was really blessed to find two really great actor's in Ohio. I hear yah on your comment on the chest plate, the best take had a car alarm ruining the shot.

Good twist! Overall good job from the costumes to the acting to the dialogue. Did you shoot HVX with stock lens? Because it looked good.

Thanks Matt for the comments. By stock lens on the HVX, do you mean the one that's stuck on the front, then yes. We did position the camera far away and punched in to give a shallower depth of field as possible with the HVX. You can tell where some of the flatter shots are b/c we forgot move the camera further back. My biggest gripe with that camera is the low light capability is less than desired.

I do remember the low light being an issue. I still have my hvx but i havent used it without the letus in a few years, but the stock lens is pretty solid. depth of field is hard to achieve though. you did a good job despite limitations!

I really enjoyed this film and the story. The acting was pretty good and the costuming was spot on. The guns were okay, but they definitely worked. This was a story piece all the way and I thought you had some really good elements here. I can tell you put alot of hard work into it, so good job.

Strong story, strong visuals (some focusing problems) but good angles that showed a great understanding for the language of cinematic storytelling. Your actors were great and I really believed them. You had a really strong opening and a pretty good ending. The only part that didn't work for me was the middle. It was going so well and then... it just... stopped. No action or forward movement, just a lot of dialog that bogged down the movie somewhat. While the actors pulled off the dialog brilliantly, the structure of it and lack of movement slowed it all down since it was mostly character building exposition. This could have been handled differently while keeping the initial tension of the piece up.

***SPOILER***
The power of the act pointing the gun at the back of his brother's head was dulled and then completely stripped away when the brothers kept on arbitrarily pointing guns at each other. It stripped away all tension and took me out of the movie since they were doing it so casually especially in a time when most gunshot wounds, accidental or intentional either resulted in amputation, death or a crippling injury. Iit also distracted from his first thought of betrayal and allowed us as the audience to just shrug it off and then completely forget about it.
**END SPOILER***

Great effort and attention to detail especially in costumes. Great casting and overall a good film despite my few quibbles.

I was happily surprised. I totally bought into the characters and loved their stories. It really gave me a feel for who they were. Good actors and nice writing.

It was told well and the end came as a bit of a surprise, a welcome one.
A little rough here and there but the total package was quite good. It sucked me in.

I hear you about the middle but based on constraints I went the route I went. I took out a whole sloshing thru the creek scene. I tried to keep it from being two talking heads with a sort of choreographed dance.

You make a good point above. They made their 'decision' already so it was no big deal if the gun went off or not. I tried creating tension with the older brother wondering if the younger brother knew he was being betrayed. I'll have to run another cut with less gun play.

Thanks! I had access to the real deal which you see at the end but for safety reasons I didn't want to use real stuff during the middle scene.

Hah hah! It takes a writer to appreciate a writer! Thanks for the kudos.

Nice stuff. I liked the whole story. For a moment I thought it was betrayal fest all over again, ah who am I kidding this film's better than that. :)

Kinship

One of the better stories in this festival. Also some of the better acting. Those two elements make for a very compelling watch. It wasn't technically flawless, though your sound mix was excellent. Would like to see you produce something with some better gear and maybe a larger crew. Nice work here!
