If Nikon fails...

yeah around 10 times as much unless you go for the 2/3" fixed lens version, which i'm guessing isn't exactly what you want since despite low video quality and lack of manual control you got the d90 exactly because it has a big sensor and interchangeable glass.

(of couse some people seem to have missed this and recommend a "real" videocamera like the hvx or similar to unhappy d90 customers, which is simply ignorant. we got the d90 because we didn't like our "real" videocameras but spent all our time fitting adapters and inventing film look post techniques, right?)

While I do agree with Matt that the reason why I got the D90 was to have film like DOF with out adapters and low light capabilities. But the 2/3'' still has interchangeable lenses, and we don't yet know it's sensor low light capabilitie. But the advantages of shooting variable frame rates up to 120 all while in a RAW format is well worth the extra Benjermans to me. And then I could always rent a S35 scarlet and a Nikon lens mount if I wanted some really low light capabilities or shallow DOF.

We will just have to wait and see.

Nikon do need to get thier act together on the video front becasue professional photographers - those that are buying D3 D3X etc are being asked to 'squeeze of a bit of video for the website' now by thier clients

And those pro photographers dont want to own two sets of kit

historically AF, D1, etc nikon have been a year behind canon but come through with winning products so I have high hopes of a D3v or D4 being a killer camera

Yep, perhaps it´ll be a killer camera. But the d3x costs around € 6.300.- at the moment (nota bene only for the body). According to the latest roadmap leak we can expect a d4 earliest in the second quarter of 2010: http://www.photographybay.com/2009/07/09/nikon-2009-2010-dslr-roadmap-leaked/. And as you can read in this roadmap it could possibly have only 30p. And who would pay around € 6000,- for such a cam here.

If nikon can´t meet our expectations with a d300s now, hopefuly announced in 2 weeks, a d400 could be the one next year (2. or 3. quarter). But until then nikon has to reckon that perhaps a few (or a lot?) loyal customers will jump ship. Especially those who want a significant better video mode right now.

not the cheap one.

We will have to wait and see. That's where I find the most interesting recent potential for the next innovative (affordable) camera. It kind of depends on the equipment that you match with it.

Either way, I think the scarlet would be pretty awesome. If the mini primes are affordable then it would a pretty awesome little setup to pick up. And you could always use your D90 for the dream sequences, etc. And Nikon lenses will always be good when working on larger formats of any device.

And I think it will be the next iteration of the D700 that brings the video to the forefront with Nikon.

Why is there so little talk of the 5d mark ii? People blow it off because it has no 24p but it far outperforms all of the other contenders. Phillip Bloom says it as do MANY people who have tried all of the cameras. Plus it is the only one being used on serious professional sets (at least as far as I have heard) and rumor is they are using it in someway for ironman 2, be it BTS or extra angles or whatever. Does it have weaknesses? Sure.

no time to talk, too busy enjoying shooting with it and our computers are busy doing 24p conversions. Nikon have their work cut out for them improving on the MKII but it will be pretty lame if they don't given they've had almost a year to do it.

As a professional photographer 6300 is a chunk I could bite - its a small monthly cost over three years

Im not getting it because no video

I would spend that on a decent combo cam with D3x photo spec

BUT I would only bite with full video control, variable frame rate and a sollid codec - preferably RAW

On the codec Id be happy with DX size jpg low (6mp) which smash ANY crummy video codec image apart - the D3 already bursts them at 13FPS - with the mirror going -50% of the way there, all they need is a locked mirror, doubled frame rate and (much) bigger buffer

For a 'stills only' man IMO the D3x is pretty much a 'forget upgrades' camera - its defo good for its physical life

I wont buy it because im no longer a stills 'only man'

I would pay 6000 for a forget upgrades camera with video attached

Again look at history nikon are one year late always and then top canon

Steps in development..
Early 1990s Auto Focus - nikon late
Early 2000s First Digital - D1 - late but half cost of canon equiv
Mid 2000s Full Frame Digital - nikon late but the D3 works unlike the buggy AF canon
My hope
Late 2000s Digital Motion Camera, Nikon late but have pro spec

It seems I have literally spent 20 years nearly sacking off nikon and my lenses (14 2.8 through to 600/f4) to go canon but just at the last momoent nikon caught up big style

Yes, the 5DII is on the right track. Best choice at the moment imo. I had some high hopes in panas gh1 - as an interims solution
if nikon isn´t able to offer a solid video mode this summer. But it turns out now that definitely isn´t the case.

There has been some drawbacks from the very start => mud in 1080p, no live view out, only 17mbps...etc.
But the real dealbreaker is banding + streaks. Take a look:

I couldn´t live with that. The worst thing is there seems to be no workaround to eliminate it. You don´t even know exactly when it happens.
I just don´t like to be always worried if i can shoot this scene properly or not (streaks, mud...). - Some guys have high hopes for the next canon 60d with 1080p/24+30.
With manual control it could really be the best choise in the near future, if nikon will disappoint us in 2 weeks.
But it would be a real change of system and i don´t like this idea ;-).

Haha... yes of course, raw format would be the non plus ultra. But i suspect the next couple of years (maybe 2-3) we will see h264 in vdslr´s - unfortunately.

Hopefully soon :-)

banding is an issue with the MKII too...

But it isn´t visible in such severe degree, is it? I for one didn´t see it in any footage of the 5DII so far. Is there a thread/sample footage about this topic somewhere? Concerning "properly exposure": in lowlight situations will be always parts of the scene underexposed most likely. I suppose the streaks flaw becomes much more obvious in gh1 footage than in 5DII stuff...

Wait what? Sorry, I have been suuuuuuper busy planning a short and at this point I don't even know what we are shooting on anymore, but yeah this is interesting. I didn't know about this press release.

Here is the thing, I have a feeling that nikon is not going to make you/us happy just from tid bits I have read here and there. What is the consensus as far as the speculation? Where do these nikonrumors come from anyways? I am stressing out. I needed to have my 5dmkii already. I am shooting early august and I am equipmentless. Damnit. Damnit damnit damnit.

My problems are more money related though. But maybe nikon could save me some money if they come out with something cheaper and better.

Not having used a GH1 I can't really say but I've only seen it once on my MKII footage and the shot was underexposed.

Even if Nikon announces a new DSLR in august it might not be available immediately.
At this point I think which camera you choose is less important than knowing how to use it and what it is capable of. They all have flaws, this is bleeding edge stuff we are playing with here but they are all capable of making films.

I believe Nikon will come through with something really good and probably start putting it in all their cameras. I'll continue to wait and save money

I think the streaks in the gh1-footage are not really "banding" in conventionally sense. They stay put, no movement: http://www.vimeo.com/5287454. Probably caused by "electromagnetic interference". On page 104 it says:

•The screen may be blacked out momentarily, or the unit may record noise due to static electricity or electromagnetic waves etc. depending on the environment of the motion picture recording. "
Nobody has any details, all speculations - transmitter masts... etc.
