Mark of the Unicorn, Inc., Cambridge MA based renown music software/hardware company has announced V3HD, the ultimate firewire video/audio interface unit.

http://www.v3hd.com/

For video production, it works with Mac/Final Cut Pro and Windows/Premiere Pro and supports DVCPRO HD/DVCPRO 50/DVCPRO format. For audio production, it works with any coreaudio compatible apps for Mac,

The highlights are that it comes with all of the video ins and outs along with MOTU’s renown digital/analog audio ins and outs, synchronization features and some stand along routing features for video and audio with bundled console software applications.

I will give more reports as soon as I’m allowed to, along with some usage reports on HPX555 and HVX200.

definitely looks sweet, but from experience some of Motu's firewire systems have wreaked havoc on PC's and in addition Motu's customer service is very hard to get in touch with. You can search out some of the Motu forums and they will back my statement up. The number they post on their site answers with "this number is disconnected". Just a word to the wise.

Will, that is bad, I know I don't do that in Japan (I'm the Japanese distributor), but I will suggest them for better service. I personally think MOTU should hire someone from this forum for the support.

Rodrigo,
It does uncompressed SD upto 10-bit with every frame format.
I will check on the cineform and HDV compatibility.

I'm hoping to be good source for this piece of equipment since I inspired MOTU to develop this unit.

So this thing can be used in the field by: plugging it into a laptop, and using it to capture DVCPRO HD footage from the uncompressed analog output of hdv cameras like the Canon XHA1 and Sony Z1?

Have I got that right Kaku? Is it 4:2:2?

Grug,

Right, you can input the HDSDI form XHG1 and XL H1's HDSDI or analog component out from A1 and Z1 then through V3HD the record with DVCPRO HD format.
I wished they put video power jack, but it doesn't have that at this point.
So, you would have to improvise on the power source.

It is 4:2:2.

Thanks Kaku, sounds very interesting. How much does the V3HD cost? I like the sound of capturing 4:2:2 DVCPRO HD at a 1440x1080!

Hi Kaku, since your the Japanese distributor, any chance you can give me a run through one day, show me the ins and outs. Then I will happily report a non biased review.

Best
Noel

ncje,

I haven't received it myself but as soon as I'm allowed to show you one, you can come in and check it out thoroughly.

Kaku- I'm just curious, but are you an engineer? You said that you encouraged Motu to make this, did you help in the design as well?

Looks like it could be expensive. Not in the grand scheme of things (esp, when it come to this kind of I/O), but it isn't going to be dirt cheap at all. Looks really nice though.

I'm not an engineer of the products, but I'm their distributor in Japan and my interests and business related to video (if you remember me as the early adaptor of many cameras and providing clips online) inspired them, I think.

I would say the price of the I/O should be a lot cheaper than I/O HD.

Man, you doing the shokotan phrasing?

Why don't we get together this weekend. Others living around Tokyo area are welcome to come over, too.
