Good Bye?

I've already been *****-smacked once by a studio over something posted on an internet site (that, by the way, did not divulge privileged information, or anything like that). Since I don't particularly enjoy wasting time palavering with Labor Relations, why invite that kind of crap, again?

Yeah, I'd prefer to not have my opinions easily accessible to anyone with my name and a google search bar. Anyone who cared to really investigate could probably figure out my real name, but why make it so easy for an employer or anyone else doing a cursory search. Somebody once said character is what you do in the dark, and I appreciate the people who treat others respectfully even when they could easily do otherwise.

I've been a member of other boards where real names are required and the truth is, there is no way to know if a real name is real or not since no verification is done. It just needs to look real. But even besides that, people post the same way, I find those places no different in terms of what people will put online and probably wouldn't say in person.

I changed to my real name because I do want people to come across what I write here and elsewhere. It makes me think about what I write. So far, it's been all positive for me. I think it all depends on what you do, and what kind of things you post about. ANYTIME I want to talk about a production, I get permission first from the producer/director/etc. But that said, I don't air out dirty laundry here. If it's not something I would say to them, I don't say it here. To me, that's just bad practice.

In a sense as well, if you use your real name, and you are doing positive things here, you are advertising yourself. I've had people come to me for professional help based on what I've posted here. But again, it really depends on what you write and what you use DVXUser for.

BTW I took it on myself to change my name to my actual name. I wish everyone would do this.

you can change your name all you want, but in my mind i still think of you as that guy that sort of looks like the lead actor from the television series "hack". i remember some names but a lot of the times i make associations based on the avatar.

I don't really use my actual name very much. Anywhere. If I started, I think it would confuse people.

Well Uga you look like a Georgia fan and as I am an LSU alum I feel we do have the uneasy kinship of the SEC going for us but... you are a Georgia fan so I must keep you at arms length. BTW what the heck is going on with Georgia football?

DVXuser has evolved, much like the number of high quality cameras in consumers hands. It used to be a different place, but yeah, it's changing, becoming more divided, but such is life. The one thing that did bother me a while ago was the rudeness and attitude that became present, which seems to be getting better. At least I've noticed such a change. But let's get it back to the way it was in 2005!! :) Let's just think before we post, remember to be kind, remember that points of view and opinions are not absolute and should be treated with respect and that everyone is allowed to have one. And most importantly, let's be supportive of everyones quest to become a better filmmaker in a positive and constructive way.

Real names is useless without some way to actually confirm identities. The bullies will still bully, only they'll hide behind a fake name, which is just another alias. There's only so much moderators can do to steer the direction of a site. It is damn cliche, but the site reflects the users. If people want it to be a film site, make it so. Post work and stir up discussion that is more than just pixels. I think it's futile to pine for what this site once was though. It's changed and evolved and it can never be what it was without killing the majority of the membership and axing most of the forums. It is too big to go back to being small.

I do think that people can choose to change that focus, but I think people are mostly interested in a place to spend some time to unwind in between renders or shoots to socialize and blow off some steam. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I think the poor state of the film economy has seriously cut into people's film-making endeavors. It is not cheap to make a film, and the dwindling turnout for dvxfests is probably partially due to lack of funds.

Another reason might be that the fests are less a measure of quality work, and more a measure of popularity. Any competition that's judged solely by the number of 'votes' someone can generate is not really a competition at all, in my opinion. Okay, I know the fest winners are based on what is essentially a 1-10 voting scale, but it still amounts to the same thing. A good many folks tend to watch/read -- and vote on -- only entries by people they know, like or respect. Sure, there are some who view every single entry and judge accordingly, but it's still a flawed system. I would be much more likely to enter if the winners were chosen by an impartial panel of qualified judges.

@David - getting "qualified" judges to watch a dozen or so films and vote on them for "free" isn't an easy feat. I would like to see that as well, a panel and not a star system, but free is free, unless people will pay entry to get judged by professionals.

About HorseFilms, that avatar looks normal in his world! I'm not sure the world Horsefilms lives in, but I bet it's crazzzy. I like the names of film companies as user names.

True about people using "fake real names" won't make a difference that a bully is a bully no matter what, however it does legitimize a site more so if you use real names or film company names than if you have a plethora of bizarre nicks. I'm just saying. In the screenwriting forum people would try to double up on nicks not knowing we can see their ip addresses. It's tiring being a moderator so my hats off to all you guys because I've been there, done that and it's not easy.

Charli, I totally understand that. I'm just saying that it's hard to put forth the time, effort and money on something for a fest, knowing that there's no truly fair system of judging involved.

I see your point David, that is something I have thought of before. In the end with it being free, it will be hard to ever get around the popluarity vote, but I think there should be a way to implement that you cannot vote unless you have watched all the films. This would of course mean streaming only (which I wouldn't like) but in an ideal world......

But it's never been cheaper and the prizes are great!? And as someone who's entered a bunch of them, I rarely spent a dime on them aside from food and the odd prop.

This might be an issue. It would be cool if DVXuser hooked up with an Independent Film Review site for these festivals. They could still keep the current system for some sort of 'Audience Choice' award.

I don't think it would mean streaming only. Just eliminate voters who only vote for a few entries.

Just some thoughts from the sidelines.

Rarely does the cream not rise to the top.

Yeah, it's happened on occasion but usually the good entries are near the top of the list. Besides, it gets you off the couch and making a short film! That's the best reason to enter. You can do it for nothing if you're creative.

Piggybacking on a side not, I too wish the User Film section was more active, and would gladly give up the DSLR user films and every other subcategory for other cameras (if there are UF sections within those) to bring it back. Uf section used to be a place to get immense amounts of help, and was one of the sections that I checked almost daily to maybe offer advice, mostly see what people were doing, or if I had my own project going, to get feedback on cuts, etc. Now though it seems that I rarely check it as there is a lack of discussion for most films. Sure there are some that get plenty of comments, critiques, etc but most of the posts just fall deeper and deeper into the thread without any attention :(

Yes, I believe it was a poor choice to seperate the sections like that in the first place. There's nothing so special about HDSLR filmmaking that it needs it's own screening room. Putting all the user films in one place would be fast way to help that place get jumping again. HDSLRs are so popular, they have, in some ways, eclipsed HD video cameras for indy films. I was going to get one, but I'm waiting on the Sony VG20 and Canon's big deal.
