Good Bye?

It seems that this forum has degenerated to a place where a few bullies run rough shod over the place and are allowed to do so?

There are a few who consistently try to provide useful information and constructive criticism to others but they are over shadowed by the ones fighting about what camera, editing system or codec is best. Then there are the posters who seem to have "issues" and will attack people, viciously, without provocation.

Come on DVX you have been so good for so long. Please straighten out these problems or risk becoming something no one enjoys except snipers and bullies.

We're with you, Paul, but we can't be everywhere at once. Be sure to report offending posts, especially from habitual bullies.

Hope you stick around Paul.

Things change, get better, get worse, get better, get worse – like life I suppose.

I feel your pain.

I reported a thread the other day where a member came in to completely derail it. They had not even seen the TV show we were all enjoyably discussing.
The post still stands and some even wait to hear more from said individual.

The post should have been removed, the member should have been suspended. Maybe he was, we haven't heard back from him.
But why not clean up his garbage.? It certainly derailed the thread and was obviously just posted to entice an argument.

I love this place. But lately, it seems to be heading downhill as Paul suggested.

I remember the consternation Hendrix got with his interpretation of the Star Spangled Banner and Abie (sp?) Hoffman with his shirt made of the flag. It's like religion...oil and water. They just don't mix.

It's the loss of storytelling/artistry basics that has led us to this point IMO (yes, on the board; but in filmmaking in general as well.)

For example: Whatever happened to the idea of a cinematographer being a painter who "paints with light"?

Every crew department has become so goddamn technical...so left brain.*

No matter your production role, we are all storytellers first and foremost (or should strive to be anyway).

*yes, exceptions to every rule yada yada yada

Most likely, judging by the rant, they were probably drunk. The post still stands and some even wait to hear more from said individual.

Don't let one bad appletini spoil the whole whisky barrel. There are still a few of us respectable drunk-posters about.

I agree with the distinguished drunk from the upper midwest

Seriously, can we ban the next person who pixel peeps and thinks it really means anything?

Best not to air this stuff in public. We saw the report but didn't agree it was a problem. He was only stating his opinion, strong though it was, and wasn't directing it at anyone on the board. We don't have a problem with strong opinions -- but if someone's being abusive to other members, trying to shut down debate, actually trolling threads -- then we have a problem.

The catch-22 we're often in is that with so many disparate members with so many points of view, not everyone's measure of offense is the same. While we try to respond to members' concerns, we also run the risk of being too draconian, which we're also often accused of.

So, we have members who think we're letting stuff go too much, while at the same time, we have others who think we're too strict, all for the same level of moderation.

If people are stifling discussion, bullying other members, being abusive, then tell us about it. But if people are just stating their opinions and not hurling insults at anyone else, really, do you want us to police that?

It was pretty obvious to all involved that the guy had not even seen the show, and he started bringing up real life comparisons like "Escobar" into it. Bordering on political.

Opinions should never be policed, but this was trolling, plain and simple. I see his post has been removed and the thread cleaned up.

No worries. I know your job is tough, I'm a mod myself. It's tough walking the line sometimes. In my eyes though (and others in that thread) he had clearly crossed it.
That's why I reported it.

Again, this forum isn't terrible. Nobody is saying that. I love this place. It's very well run.
But let's leave the cafe for the rambling and drunk posting. :D

The rest of the forum should appear more professional. I think that's where the complaints are aimed at.

Again, this should not be aired in public. However, think about what you're saying -- should we delete any comment made by anyone who hasn't actually seen a show, if they post about it? (Are you absolutely sure you have never done the same?) Or should we have the confidence in our membership that as adults, they can filter for something like that? If you're going to say "well, not every case, but if . . . " can you actually draw a bright-line rule where everyone would agree? A lot of this is a judgment call, and even though some people won't believe it, our presumption is usually against interference without a clear rule violation -- we find that the facilitation of conversation is preferable to the suppression of it.

Not to pick on you about it, but those are the issues which go into these things.

In the case we're speaking of, it was glaringly obvious to all involved. And yes, if people are talking about a movie/show and someone comes in rambling an almost incoherent paragraph and says this show sucks when they obviously haven't even seen it! 'That guy' should be dealt with, yes. Every time.

But yes, I'm aware that's not always the case. That's what makes your job a tough one.

I'm done though. It's been cleaned up so obviously someone thought so.
I just brought it up here because it wasn't being dealt with even after being reported and this thread felt like the right place at the time.

Sorry.

Have a good one.

Let's please remember that DVXUser, like the rest of the Interwebs, is an international community. There are folks around here for whom English is not the first language. For some of them, English is still a very unfamiliar language. They aren't drunk. They aren't rambling. They're communicating the best they can in a language with which they aren't terribly comfortable.

Absolutely! Couldn't agree more. It was the accusations within the post that were so far fetched that made it seem like something else. I'm also VERY aware who the Member is and their previous posts are completely coherent. This one was... off in comparison. Way off.

Regardless, let's move on to the original topic if this thread is to continue. I don't want to keep discussing dirty laundry here.

PM me if there are any further issues.

Thx

Not that I don't know what it means, but a good friend of mine wants to know what "pixel peeps" means. He's not very bright.

It's when people obsess over some tiny insignificant image difference, and usually then go on to fight to the death about it.

i must have thicker skin than most people because these types of threads always surprise me. or maybe i have average skin, but it covers layers upon layers of impenetrable body fat. either way, i try not to take what is said on here too personal. it's unfortunate if you feel bullied to the point of leaving, but it is sort of hard for me to relate to getting that upset about the writings of some random dudes on the internet. if i don't agree with someone i just move on. you have to separate the wheat from the chaff. if the chafe is especially bad, apply cream after separating.
