Good Bye?

A lot of this could be mitigated if we went to a real names rule like reduser.

People say a lot of things behind the anonymity of the internet that they would never say to your face.

It helps the anger, but it doesn't stop the stupid though. :) People still will act like they know what they are talking about. Welcome to the interwebs!

Interesting. But how is it enforced? Wouldn't they go from YazzyJazzy1974 to Doctor John Smithy-Jones?

Or is a verified system, as in twitter?

I think the *ignore* function is whats often missing. Being able to ignore trolls and even abusive lingo is the key IMO. Call it layers of body fat-elephant skin, whatever. Its something one can try to learn and it comes with age but some people just have it and I admire them like my wife, who after being screamed at with obscene lingo (while I was getting ready to jump on the guy), quietly said " these words you should reserve for your mother dear sir" and it stopped me dead frozen on the stairs right there! Others call it class.....

This site is better than most when it comes down to antagonizing rudeness. The mods are usually on it from the incidents I've seen. I think if I were to shy away from every site on the internet that had an occasional jerk, I'd probably need to cancel my Time Warner account.

need to get a plugin customized, but coming eventually, we'll have a post rating system. up or down. you have to earn the right to use it... only those with the right to use it can bring other people in. will auto-collapse negatively rated posts, allow you to view threads/sub-forums/the whole board by only viewing top rated posts, etc, etc...

personally, i agree... we have our share of problems, and I don't want to downplay them... so, don't get me wrong... but, man... the internet is a shitty place when it comes to people's attitudes. We can do a lot better still, but in a larger context, I think our members are like the almost grown-ups of the internet :)

Exactly. I know for a fact that many of the users on the real names forums use pseudonyms.

With the Internet, just like with cars, people reveal their true selves. Shrouded behind that anonymity. For an example of one of the Internet's biggest collection of hatred and as well as an example of what anonymity does to people: YouTube.

couldn't agree more, Youtube has proven that racism is alive as ever. Seems like every other comment is based on race, religion, or just plain meanness.
It's to bad the Op feels this way because he's a good helpful member. Sometimes a good break from a forum can make you realize it's not all that bad, and that other forums are way worse.

It's the loss of storytelling/artistry basics that has led us to this point IMO (yes, on the board; but in filmmaking in general as well.)

For example: Whatever happened to the idea of a cinematographer being a painter who "paints with light"?

Every crew department has become so goddamn technical...so left brain.*

No matter your production role, we are all storytellers first and foremost (or should strive to be anyway).

May I please put forth these four lines of wisdom as my nomination for the post of the year?

It seems that this forum has degenerated to a place where a few bullies run rough shod over the place and are allowed to do so?

There are a few who consistently try to provide useful information and constructive criticism to others but they are over shadowed by the ones fighting about what camera, editing system or codec is best. Then there are the posters who seem to have "issues" and will attack people, viciously, without provocation.

Come on DVX you have been so good for so long. Please straighten out these problems or risk becoming something no one enjoys except snipers and bullies.

I think this started awhile ago. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing, but I noticed the community wasn't as fun and cool anymore. What I mean is people simply don't participate as much, unless I'm missing something. For me it started with the user films section. I figured everyone is using a DSLR now and instead of popping up in userfilms, they're going there, which I've always thought giving the DSLR section it's own screening room was a bad choice and took away from the userfilm section. That used to be a great place on DVX, then suddenly it just stopped jumping. But the same could be said for the Cafe in my opinion. I have a few ideas why, but they're nothing I know to be true. But something's different.

It's the same thing that happened to Youtube and even before it went commercial. The community bond started snapping. Some old schoolers left, new people took their place but wasn't as community centered. It's like the same thing has happened here. Maybe because when this first started we all rallied around one thing, the DVX. Now that it's mainly an indy filmmaking site I don't know. It seems to happen after a few people get big and then things change for some reason. Then there's the fact that people who've been here for a long time are probably out trying to perfect their craft or get a project together so they don't come on here as often, leaving only certain people. Plus trolls exist on all forums.

Some guy said he got a bigger lens than I did. I felt offended. I may not be able to zoom in but I'm extremely well under low light. ;)

ps: best thing to do is to ignore these people. They'll stop when they get no attention.

MAH - was the show in question "Jersey Shore?" bawwhahahaha, don't watch it, afraid to lose brain cells. I use to moderator forums like this one, MSNBC, TalkCity.com, DoneDealPro and I found people say what they want to because as stated earlier in this thread, "they hide behind the monitors."

Of course, we got their ip address and banned them. We also then qualified users in time to see if they got kicked out of other forums.

This forum it's about your equipment, how you film, etc. You think it's any different in car forums? Fashion forums? Same thing everywhere you go. Just report the mess and move on.
