Good Bye?

I think it is and should be. Cinema is not auto or fashion. You can tell how seriously I take the distinction, by my willingness to go all pretentious and use the word 'cinema.'

@Sad - I knew I had gotten it wrong. I say theater, you say cinema, potato, tomato...

I would love for all "public" places (forums, Youtube, etc.) to optionally allow users to have their identities verified. Then you could filter and interact only with "identity verified" users...should you choose to do so.

The percentage of poo-poo would likely magically drop to a pretty low level.

I believe it would help but some people will not care. BTW I took it on myself to change my name to my actual name. I wish everyone would do this.

Why? Do you seriously believe that the quality of my participation would improve if I didn't use the 'Sad Max' handle? In fact, it would more-or-less disappear, so far as substantive discussion goes: the last thing I need is for my name to be attached to my undiluted opinions on certain professional matters, should any of my employers happen across them.

No, no not at all Sad Max. You are certainly a valued contributor and could call yourself anything. It just seems on some forums that require actual names the trolling and attacks are less. I in no way believe this would stop because no one can actually see behind the screen but maybe it would slow down and make newbies think and reason before posting.

i'm torn on real names, honestly...

it has some usefulness... but, not sure it outweighs the added work. ultimately, the trouble makers will still be the trouble makers (just under more, real sounding names)... there is a small group in the middle that it does help though. and, there are people who are so f'ing smart and reasonable, it doesn't matter what they call their self, and there may well be good reason for them not to want to be called by their real name.

That group in the middle, who it can and does sometimes help with.... well.... I'm happy to continue to encourage real names. we do encourage real names... and generally, that group in the middle, tends to come around on their own with time, and decide they'd like to go real name.

The difference is, someone who just uses the boards for talking, has no real motivation to use their real name. someone who uses it to enter fests, or show their work, and as a networking opportunity to start to make inroads in the business.... they begin to see a clear benefit to using their real name... but, they also aren't a problem member either :)

The most insightful post on this thread yet. Thanks Jason.

Wait...someone here got big?!

And they didn't take the rest of us with them?

Exactly. It seems that's how some people feel. On Youtube it started with Lonelygirl and Lisa Nova and a few others who got their 15 minutes and then it made a lot of people think, "If they could do it, why not me." Youtube suddenly became a place where people came to get famous. But if you're there to get famous, the interaction stops, because it was never your intent to interact. The people who get the big view are usually young cute girls or people who actually are putting on productions like "Key of Awesome"/"Barely Political" so it's not like you just do something and become famous. A lot of the people who became famous had been on Youtube for awhile and stuck with it.

It seems like some people on here got big (made a feature, the film got bought person went on to make money), some egos were bruised and it seems things starting changing then. When DVXU first started it attracted people to one camera. This piece of equipment that changed the market and bought attention to the prosumer filmmaker. Now everyone has something for us. And even then there was argument over whether it looked like film and all that insanity, but people were participating and almost every board on DVXUser was jumping with info, questions or just video shot the DVX100. So what are we doing different now? I mean there should be all kinds of stuff happening with all the hardware we have now. DVXU hasn't been about the DVX100 for sometime now. I mean they don't even make the thing anymore.

Today we rally around indy filmmaking and love of the visual media, but what exactly does that mean? And I think if there are people causing problems on the forums, they need to be pointed out. One of the big issue in the UF section became people not knowing how to give and receive criticism. They had to actually post a stickie about it. I think a lot of people got real heated over small matters and it became a big issue. And I doubt most newbies even read the stickies unless they seem interesting. In the user film section you can post something and if it's not hot, no one cares, but back in the day, someone would say something. I don't know how it is in the DSLR forum, but in UF nothing's hot anymore. The energy is gone.

There is a forum, two I believe for screenwriters in which on the first you MUST use your real name, they have professional screenwriters who post there and on the other forum you must qualify with the owner of the boards who has connections to agents, etc. in the industry.

I more than understand why you may not want to use your full real name, however, you can use your first name like I do, use your filmmaking company name, use a partial of either of the two, use your "nickname" (if it's not embarrassing) - the thing is this, this is a filmmaker's forum.

Why hide under such user names like bzot or robotdp (just examples)? I get not wanting to use your full name but why the insane nicknames if you want to be taken seriously?

Seems to me that being taken seriously has more to do with the content of one's posts than the handle under which the posts are made.

Sad - I do believe there is a correlation between hiding behind the monitor with a user nickname and posting, not to say all who use aliases hide, but it sure makes it easier to hide that way, doesn't it? It's easier to bully, to be confrontational IF people don't know who you really are, that's what I'm saying.

Yes there are exceptions. Yes the post and threads speaks volumes of someone. But think about some of the problem posters in the past. Did they use their real names or crazy nicknames?

I have always had my first name and my company name in my signature. It hasn't seemed to hurt me...or has it? Hahaha

I've already been *****-smacked once by a studio over something posted on an internet site (that, by the way, did not divulge privileged information, or anything like that). Since I don't particularly enjoy wasting time palavering with Labor Relations, why invite that kind of crap, again?

Sad - I get where you are coming from, but not all dudes here are as cool as you, babe.

Piggybacking on a side not, I too wish the User Film section was more active, and would gladly give up the DSLR user films and every other subcategory for other cameras (if there are UF sections within those) to bring it back. Uf section used to be a place to get immense amounts of help, and was one of the sections that I checked almost daily to maybe offer advice, mostly see what people were doing, or if I had my own project going, to get feedback on cuts, etc. Now though it seems that I rarely check it as there is a lack of discussion for most films. Sure there are some that get plenty of comments, critiques, etc but most of the posts just fall deeper and deeper into the thread without any attention :(
