GH2 Tests (with a gh13 perspective)

Ditto +10 lol

@grimepooch ...the reason for the higher slant in the GH-2's image vs the GH-1 is because of the zoom lens (kit lens) used on the GH-2 vs a wide angle (20mm) on the GH-1 (IMO...but I could be wrong). Also, I find my 20mm lens is less contrast(y) than my 14-140mm kit lens. Remember this is just a casual test...not scientific.

I agree in why they are different, although I believe the original poster set the aperture to the same and set the focal length to the same (although aperture has nothing to do with rolling shutter). Although you can see that the focal length isn't the same. If they both were identical, then we could measure the skew difference pretty easily. I'll be honest in saying even with the FoV difference, I was not expecting that large a difference between them, here is what I calculated:

GH1: 3.43 degrees
GH2: 6.48 degrees

So the GH2 line is 88% more slanted than the GH1

GH1: 25 pixels wider FoV in the reduced sizes I made (46%) , or 2.9% wider than the GH1.

What's this all mean? It means we really still don't know. But I really don't feel that the GH2 has any massive improvement on rolling shutter from this example EVEN with the differences in the shot. It's probably the same or a little worse looking at this. Given the margin of error on measuring the slant of the line, it's still A LOT more slanted.

Personal opinion here - I agree with Hunter that this camera is a beast. I have viewed almost all the GH2 videos - and all the really high quality ones made me go wow and hmmm. Even the stills show more resolved detail. So stoppa-tha-nitta-tha-picking. The GH13 stuff and ( I own one ) never made me react the same way. Good yes but not wow. Just for clarity - I have recorded HDMI captures for years so I do not often spend too much time on the low megabits/sec end of the pond. I normally capture to Cineform at 24 Megabytes/sec or a nanoflash so big difference. IMHO opinion once this baby gets shooting more in the wild it will be obvious that it is an advancement on the GH1 in every respect. Personal conjecture again. I have a Japanese version coming next week and will do some definitive HDMI captures. If that feature works as I hope - and I optimistically believe it will work just fine as we have not had a single confirmation about whether it can't be captured at 24p yet - then the feature of LIVE HDMI means any argument over image quality will be an unfair comparison. The GH13 won't come close.

people are saying they're gonna seriously test the HDMI for a week now but no footage.
anyway, i'm almost sure that IF 24p output is possible, you'll first have to record on camera for 24p to start outputting. besides, all first obscure tests of output recordings till now show less res than the avchd codec..

Yup I suspect that is the way forward. Funnily enough - that is how I record now anyway - record on camera and then on the Nanoflash. It is strange that no-one has done the test yet - by that I mean more than just a few seconds of spinning glass. I should get mine mid-week next week and then put this to bed in my own mind. If 24p is possible I think this will be a great companion to the the Af100.

Are there any pulsing problems with the GH1 native 24p?

Can't wait to see some footage, and hopefully some testing done to see if it's an easy pulldown process from that captured footage to remove any interlacing artifacts.

Great news! My Japanese GH2 is now an ENGLISH GH2! (thanks to the help of Vitaliy)

Pretty sure he will post details about it soon. Man! That guy is crazy smart!

Why do I have a feeling DVXuser is about to explode?

I haven't even tried to sell my GH1 yet! Calm down with the hacking already. I mean wait until I sell it for crying out loud. The value is already diminishing. Joking aside, I want more details until I jump to conclusions about him messing with the bit rate as well.

You can remain calm for a while.
Bitrate and other things requires access to firmware.

As for publication.
No details will be published for a while (as we need Panasonic to run at full production speed making it harder to make fast firmware change ala 1.34).
After some time i'll try to make small utility and instructions.

At least you popped up right away before this news spreads all over the place.
I do see what you mean about not publishing stuff right away.

This will rock if it happens.

Truly, Vitaliy. Already an unmodified GH-2 is a pretty impressive upgrade. But imagine some high bitrate AVCHD. That will really be nice. I have a friend who works in TV who is testing the 1D replacement right now. So canon is right at panasonics tails.

Vitaliy - man you are a genius dude!!!! What can I say - keep up the good work. I will be sending you a pm when my Japanese GH2 arrives. best wishes.

After years, Canon will update their high end cameras. I'd be interested if they raise the bar, and what features they intend. Example, we have live recordable HDMI. 1:1 crop mode. Variable aspect ratio sensors. Touch screen focus. But limited top 24p @24mbs. So will they have much higher Mbs, and more robust codec? How much better in low light? What great features will they add that we would want?

If what they did with HDV was any indication then I bet they would end up with the best 24MBps AVCHD implementation ever. Of course it will be late in the game as usual.
