GH2 Rumors Thread

Warranty.. yes. But stabilty? The original GH1 codec broke apart, whenever you moved the cam too quickly. NOW with the patch its fixed.... :)
Not quite stable yet. That's why they are continually testing the new...data rates etc. to find the optimal one for us to shoot with.

There has been no announcement from Panasonic as to the existence of anything called a "GH2". So anything you read about any introduction is speculation.

I'm sure everyone's sick of me posting in this thread, and I don't mean to be getting anyones hopes up but Andrew Reid from EOSHD tweeted panasonic regarding the GH2 and they had this response

PanasonicDirect
@EOSHD Aww, wish we could share more with you but you're just going to have to wait until it comes out! ;) (RE: #LUMIX #GH2) #panasonic

surely this mean's it's at least semi-official, as I'm pretty sure you have to make a product before it can come out

Hi Ian: I think I know what you mean -- using Vitaliy Kiselev's PTool software inappropriately can cause a GH1 to freeze & require a restart -- but just to be clear, PTool itself has so far proven to be very solid with no stability issues at all.

PTool users aren't required to experiment in search of "optimal" settings. Instead they can use one of the well-documented, known-to-work-in-most-all-cases settings and realize improved GH1 video with no hassles.

Concerning the GH1 warranty, my understanding is that the current version of PTool allows a GH1 to accept any firmware update, including "reverting" to the current version from Panasonic. As a result, I don't believe there is a warranty issue. I guess we might imagine some low-probability scenarios which might result in Panasonic not honoring the warranty on a GH1 that has been "touched" by a PTool version of the firmware. Maybe. But I might be wrong about this.

In my experience, it's easy to use PTool to set data-rates which noticeably improve the GH1's video quality _and_ which work reliably on quality SDHC cards Class 6 or higher. For example, the so-called "jobless C" native 1080p24 AVCHD settings (40... 46... 50...) w. no pulldown [only; no other changes] work perfectly for me in every shooting scenario I've tried (and I've tried many, and with multiple lenses) on all the Fuji 4GB Class 6 cards I own. And the video quality is definitely better than without these changes. YMMV.

When the Panasonic Class 10 card I ordered arrives I'll also try higher data-rate settings, such as PTool's own "C" settings (50... 52... 60...).

Bottom line is that PTool makes it easy & quick to improve a GH1's video quality, as long as you don't get carried away and "crank it up to 11" and then try to use it with a cheap SDHC card. And realistically I have strong doubts there are going to be warranty issues going forward. Unless Panasonic wants to go out of their way to piss off a whole lot of people by being a "strictly by the book" *ss about it. :-)

P.S.: Attached are some compressed frame grabs from GH1 "jobless C" AVCHD native 1080p24 footage I'm shooting of a friend's restored 1972 'cuda ... sweet car! After we're done shooting in a few weeks I hope to be able to upload the edited version.

A follow-up to my previous post: Unfortunately, the ~20 megabytes/sec Panasonic Class 10 SDHC card I bought doesn't seem to be fast enough to record "static high-detail scenes"* with PTool v3.36 settings A, B, or C in 1080p24 AVCHD with no pulldown and especially when using a Lumix 20mm pancake or the kit 14-140mm zoom lens. This all works fine when I use an old "soft" manual Nikon lens on my GH1.

After reading more of the posts in these GH1 threads I see now that other folks have reported this same result.

So until I get a SanDisk Extreme Class 10 (~30 MB/sec) or some other super-fast card to try, I've set my cam using PTool to the C settings (50... 52... 60...) and -- as much as I hate to do it -- allow my GH1 to add pulldown to 24p. :(

* I've attached 2 example digital stills of "static scenes of death" which cause my GH1 to stop recording 24pN every time I try.

I just picked up a set of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/SanDisk-Extreme...gital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item335e5538d8

I’ve been shooting (with the 14-140mm kit lens) at those settings you mentioned and it works fine with no errors recording the video. But in the last couple of days it shows an error when trying to download the footage. So…what I’ve been doing is downloading manually (dragging and dropping)…which works out fine for now.

eBay is notorious for fake SD cards and the SD cards you got on eBay are shipped from Hong Kong even though the eBay seller is located in Canada.

 OMG I have an affinity for early 70s Cudas. That thing looks amazing. Definitely looking forward to the final edit.

EDIT: I posted a rough edit of some of these video clips online; I supposed we should take this off-topic discussion about the '72 'Cuda over here. :-)

Here's an uncorrected digital still from today's shoot. I rigged up my Zaza slider in the driver's seat. The car is functional, but doesn't have a battery in it, so we couldn't use the dashboard's built-in lighting. So I set up 3 lights on C-stand arms poking into the car (with snoots & tiny scraps of black-wrap foil in front as cookies to cast shadows) to get some light on the gauges.

Today I threw caution to the wind and used Vitaliy Kiselev's PTool (gotta give him credit!) to set my GH1 with his AVCHD "C" settings and 24pN, even though I was shooting with the Lumix 20mm lens. Worked perfectly since there's no intense detail in these scenes. Today I shot with ISO 200, f1.7, 1/50th, WB = Tungsten preset, Fillm Mode = Smooth (-2 -2 -2 0) & iExposure = High. I hope to post at least a brief video clip on Vimeo soon. Fun stuff.

Seriously. I just sold out again and had to place another order for restocking DVX Book/DVD sets. You'd think after 7 years it would have run its course, but it's totally the Energizer Bunny of the camcorder world. It keeps going... and going... and going...

With the second market price for a DVX at $400-$800 I'm not surprised.
