Barry. No. This does not sound reasonable:

"great. no 24p. worthless.
toss this one if the garbage bin. way to go you god damn morons. "

Neither does building in every shooting permutation that can be conceived because someone might like it.

What is the difference between what he said and what you said?

The way I see it, you're clamoring for us to have less options. And we're happy with the options we have. You'd take away something we like. So how is that reasonable?

At some point you may want to move this discussion but for now:

What I'm clamoring for is an end to the pervasive myth of 24 f/s as some kind of aesthetic standard and to expose it for what it really is: misguided film-making snobbery. An antiquated artificial distraction that only impedes the development of video technology for the rest of us.

I think I see a bit of a difference here.

Well, it's pretty safe to say you're in the wrong place. You might have better luck singing Mike Krzyzewski's praises in a UNC bar.

We here at DVXUser hold that 24p is exactly an aesthetic standard, and we celebrated in the 24p revolution, and if you don't like 24p, this isn't the place for you.

Yeah! I'm starting a new Revolution in motion pictures! I want to shoot something at 1 FPM! 1 Frame Per Minute! All this antiquated 24FPS Stuff, PSHAW! Just because some dudes started shooting their bourgeoisie little movies at 24fps DOESN'T MEAN I HAVE TO CONFORM TO THEIR STANDARDS TO BE WIDELY ACCEPTED AS NARRATIVE MATERIAL! Down with these standards and all other standards! In fact, why even use a camera! I'm going to be so far ahead of the curve I'm going to tell stories by actually chiseling them into a rock! In a Cave no less!

Oh boy another one of those...the lone 30P artist raging against convention. Enjoy your PD150. :violent5:

give me 24p or give me death.

Man we need to get some new DVXuser shirts made with that slogan.

Friendly reminder: This is the "GH2" rumor thread, not the "God's one true frame-rate" thread, etc. ;-)

In other news, there's not any real new info in it, but this recent interview with Panasonic's Michiharu Uematsu is semi-interesting:

Classic coy:

"... Q: You have all the elements to create a camcorder micro 4/3. Can we expect an expert model with interchangeable lenses fast enough or is it a dream?

A: In Panasonic, we have 2 divisions: photo and video. I can not answer for another department on this subject, sorry. ..."

On a similar note, I think all this push for "progressive" video is simply a scheme by "Big Progressive" to get everyone on that format.

Interlaced rules.

60i or die! :cheesy:

Not even 30 fps. At least 30 fps. Even more to help avoid artifact crapola. It's kinda like vision itself. Now there's a convention.

Back to the "GH2, 3, 4:" technology will force this issue exactly as it did for the b&w aesthetic.

But I understand somewhere more robust is needed to enlighten on such a sensitive subject.

Meanwhile, Sony continues its move toward releasing their first "EVIL" mirror-less, large-sensor consumer camera, possibly shipping by this Summer:
http://sonyalpharumors.com/

It'll be interesting to see what if any influence this Sony cam (and the expected HD video-capable a7xx replacement) may have on Panasonic's "GH2" plans.

Given manufacturing lead times, Panasonic's hardware design for the GH2 may by now be mostly set in stone, assuming it's announced at Photokina in Sept. & starts shipping by the end of 2010. But perhaps (?) they'll still have time to adjust the GH2 firmware design well after NAB (April) if necessary for competitive reasons or otherwise.

We shall see. In any event, I'm looking forward to my GH1 arriving by next Tues! :-)

As noted on 43rumors.com, the Imaging Resource website has published an interesting interview with Yoshiyuki Inoue, a senior camera planner from Panasonic Corporation:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1268405016.html

In the interview Mr. Inoue discusses us video-centric users, and mentions possible future cams such as the "GH3", and hints about what Panasonic's video products division _might_ do, and more. Nothing too surprising, but obviously the wheels are turning, however slowly.

Excerpt: "... Inoue: Yes. In Micro Four Thirds cameras, we still have the mechanical shutter mechanism. But if we can develop a sensor that has an absolutely electronic shutter, then we won't need the mechanical shutter. But it is so far still a dream. If we could develop such a camera, I think that's what the next generation camera will become. ..."

See the interview for more.

Very interesting, good find! This really does confirm a lot of what some other people have been saying. The qualities of the GH1 will slowly be placed inside Panasonic's camcorders. It only makes sense, if they make the GH series to damn good, then what would be the purpose of buying a camcorder at 3-5x the price. Most professionals record separate audio anyways, so XLRs are not really a deal breaker. I wonder if Panasonic will continue to cripple GH series (ie. no native 24p, no monitoring, AGC, etc.) to keep their profit margins. It is good to hear from someone at Panasonic that they even think the GH1 is made for video use and not just put in as an extra bonus!

I am quoting from another forum:
"A new patent published today (March 11th) has come to my attention. In it are various technical drawings and a figure which looks very much like the GH1. The patent was filed in September 2009 - later than the original GH1's release. But this camera is not the G10 or G2 as it does not have a touch screen.
...
The main claim of this patent is the 'heat radiators and heat conductors' inside a 'metal body' which remove heat from around the image processing unit and the CMOS sensor itself.
...
It seems Panasonic are going to be pushing the image processor and CMOS speed a great deal which would explain this patent for heat ejection and control."

Interesting!

I've written about the prospect of Panasonic putting 1080 60p in a new GH1 like camera and we all know that with the T2i and the 7D when you shoot in 720 60p, you increase the chances of having heating issues. I know from shooting on the GH1 720 60p mode for many month, I have never dealt with a heating issue. Perhaps doing 1080 60p would be even more stress for the camera and Panasonic is taking extra precautions. Most-likely their increasing the scanning which would make the picture quality a lot better but that would definitely cause extra heating.

What would be incredible is to have the chip output higher than 60 frames per second at 1080 resolution and record to H.264 at 24p for excellent in camera slow motion.

Interview with senior camera planner Yoshiyuki Inoue at imaging resource (via 43rumors.)

http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1268405016.html

"For the GH1, the main people buying it are enthusiasts and some pro movie editors. They find its movie quality very high, so are buying it because of the movie quality, even though its connectivity with other movie equipment isn't so good."

IR:
Okay. So there are really two different markets: For the G1 / GF1, it's really average users (consumers), and for the GH1 video enthusiasts, who are focused on high video quality.

Inoue:
Yes.

IR:
Interesting.

Inoue:
Very interesting! <laughs> This is - for us - is very interesting!

IR:
Given that interest from the higher-end videographers is so strong, do you see developing further in that direction, with other models like the GH1 that really have a very strong video focus?

Inoue:
I think some people are interested in this, but not so many people.

IR: So it's a small part of the market?

Inoue:
Yes. So I think maybe our video cameras will be improving in this direction.

IR:
Ah: So your professional video recorders will go in that direction, not the G-series.

Inoue:
Yes. Our G-series is aimed at more the average customer. I think the GH1 will continue, but specifications will improve.

IR:
So the GH1 is really aimed at consumers, even though many pros are using it...

Inoue:
Yes, yes.

.

Ok so he implies maybe the video camera people are working on large sensor cameras or interchangeable lens cameras...maybe m4/3?

He also notes that us video people like the GH1.

He also says spec improvements are coming (with the GH2....there was another rumor about that today involving a metal body and other features to disapate heat from a higher speed sensor...from other rumors I believe the camera is due to be announced in September.)

He mentions the lack of connectivity with other movie equipment, so they're aware that we want monitor out and better audio control...the question is will they give it to us? When he reminds us the G-Series is aimed at consumers it doesn't seem totally likely.

But certainly it doesn't seem that they're abandoning the GH line...he mentions features he'd like to see in a GH3 and GF3. Furthermore, even him saying that the video specs will likely improve is good news.

When you combine the patent rumor and the two guys distaste for the mechanical shutter, I am willing to bet the GH2 will incorporate a CMOS sensor with an incredibly fast rolling shutter to allow the camera to take pictures without a physical shutter, and with the added bonus of reducing rolling shutter skew, flash-banding, etc, in video. I think it seems probable that the camera will have no physical shutter.

Maybe removing the mechanical shutter also gives Panasonic some room inside the camera to fit additional electronics, or maybe cooling components -- it might be fun if the "GH2" was liquid cooled. ;-)

But seriously, Panasonic & the other major players seem posed to ship another wave of super-useful cameras in the next 6-9 months, in addition to the pretty fab ones they're already selling.

When the full specs of the current GH1 were first published early last year, many of us noted the GH1 was _so close_ to perfection in terms of circa 2009 bang for the buck. It still is, of course.

Personally I'd be happy if in the "GH2" Panasonic only implements the feature requests we proposed in the firmware petition last Summer. Anything beyond these would be pure gravy: Fantastic if it happens, but not absolutely required to insure the cam's usefulness.
