Winter, a Fairy Tale

Great news today and an interesting observation....
I was in contact with the horticulturist at UT today and he is all for our using their greenhouse to film one of our scenes. He seems very interested and enthusiastic about the story and is willing to help any way he can.
The responses to the casting call continue to come in. Hopefully three of these people are exactly what we are looking for.
The crew for the film signed on today. I'm excited to get to work with a couple of them again and this time with all the gear you could want.
And here is the strange observation. Several of the people I have had express great enthusiasm for this project are the same guys who love making zombie films and splatter films. They are the last people I thought would be interested in the project. Everyone who has heard the story line has gotten really excited and wants to work on it. I've had a couple of the actors who are auditioning tell me they want to work on the film even if they aren't on screen. Ideas keep getting thrown at me for little touches here and there and they work! It's as though this story really wants to get made and everything is aligning itself to make it happen.
So, other than the auditions later this week, we lack only an old skin on frame kayak (I think I can get one from a fellow kayaker). The odd props and set dressings we will need have all been found locally and inexpensively.
I'm extremely excited and happy about the way this project is coming together. I am convinced you will all be very impressed and delighted by the end result. I can safely say it will be unlike anything we have seen before on DVXUser.

Bad news Will, I couldn't get the fake alien head. Still working on the saucer mock up.

Well, I would have had Chuck E cheese, but uh, turns out it's illegal to buy a small Indian child.

Might be off the boards for a while.

See what happens when you tell one guy about your plan?!?!?!?!
John, I told you to find out where Angelina and Brad got theirs. Way to go!
Morgue? Chuck E Cheese? I thought we decided the McDonald's Play land outside the mall, and I don't care what the judge said about 100 yards.

Ever so slightly frustrated right now. I can't seem to get the photo attachment function to function. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm just getting nowhere. HELP.

Is that what you're having trouble with?

Auditions start today. Picked up some props over the weekend. Location scouting went really well and we've got all of them pretty much figured out. While most of this film is going to be shot "Hollywood style" I am going to shoot parts of it guerrilla style. Screw the man!

My least favorite part of the audition process is over. I hate giving good people bad news. But I saved the best for last and gave two of my actors early Christmas presents. This turned out to be far more difficult than I had originally anticipated. However, the two actors I went with really brought their enthusiasm with them when they walked in the door. I'm still looking for the third one, I hope he shows up soon.

Will,

You might want to think about using that camera as a B-camera, at best. I'm not sure it's up to a short film like you're planning. At least use a DVX or something.

:D

We're doing some camera tests tomorrow. Various jib shots, some adapter stuff. I'll let you know how it turns out. Should be some interesting photos by mid day.

Here's the camera we're using for the film.

Hey, that's cool, man. I thought about using an old camera myself, but to be honest putting the camera in kinda ended up being an afterthought. I had written the script and was ready to film, and was like, "oh, yeah... I have to have a camera in this thing somewhere". :)

Looking good man. Your actress has an interesting look.

Keep us posted.

Later,
Jason

The camera was in from the beginning. The story was so easily adapted to have it work, we never even thought about another. The actress walked in and everyone said, "there she is."

Latest of the latest. I got an e-mail from a guy who has a wooden Kayak and told me to come pick it up for as long as we need it for the film. Once again, this project keeps making things happen.
We did an intensive survey of the site for part of the film yesterday. It's an outdoor area and pretty harsh terrain. It's going to be interesting to see how we get our gear to the location and then get the equipment set up and stabilized.
This is really starting to get fun.

Sounds great, man.... A kayak? In the film, or filming from it?

Sounds like you are really getting into the project. Glad to hear it.

Later,
Jason.

Both. This project has a bit of everything in it. I'm just finishing up with some lighting tests. Footage is downloading to my laptop right now. My Day-Flo lights are working really well and it's like 40 degrees outside right now. I'll post a clip from the lighting test in a bit.
