GH2 official discussion thread

I should clarify my question: Assuming the firmware does get decrypted, what is the chance that 1080p60 or 1080p30 can be made possible?

Assuming the firmware does get decrypted, these questions may at one point be answered. GH2 already does 1080p30 (w/out sound) with variable frame rate at 80% I think..?

Almost exactly what I was going to ask about - in 1080/24p "Cinema mode", can the "variable video mode" at 80% be used to shoot at 30 frames / sec? Can someone with the camera confirm this?

Does this disable sound recording as Perder suggests?

If yes to the former and no to the latter, I'm putting one of these on order :) ... otherwise I'll have to think about it ... thanks.

Your question is answered here http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?235478-GH2-80-slow-motion-mode-30p-for-Europeans

EDIT: hopefully..

Thanks Perder - I tried searching but didn't have the right keywords, evidently.

So, 1 of 2 there - 30fps but no sound :o( *&T^!@# crippled firmware! That's (just) enough to justify getting a GH2 over a T2i, though, I think :o/ worst case is if I need to shoot NTSC and there's no hack by then, I'll have to use separate sound and a clapperboard... not a terrible big deal.

OK, here's a crazy suggestion for the hack suggestion box - 1080/48p for motion on high-speed DCI projectors. Could this possibly be more achievable than 1080/60p?

This is exactly what I suggested a few months back. I hope this is achievable.

Follow focus also in video mode via touchscreen:
Well, did not work in most models and nobody could make it work . But in the end I did find 2 models where it worked and it looked good to me. The GH2s on the Photokina were of course all pre series models and not all of them had all features working already. The product managers said, that this will definitively be working in the final GH2.

Focus Questions:

My GH2 follow focus via touchscreen doesn't work. What does that mean?

Plus, have you seen the "GH2 Light Speed AF Demo" video. If you notice, the guy is video taping the camera, not showing the GH2 video footage doing that. I'm assuming that's because the focus isn't that fast in video record mode. As lease, that's the case with my camera (and I don't know if that's a problem with my camera or not). My camera will do it that fast in still mode, but not video mode. It can take 3 or 4 sec. to focus in video mode. Do you know anything about that?

Thanks for all your help!

Update:

I called panasonic and they confirmed that the slow focus in video recording is NORMAL and touchscreen fallow focus is NOT available in video recording mode.

So for me, if it wasn't for the improvement of that patterned noise and banding (BIG issue), there might not have been any reason to upgrade. My GH13 was good enough - except for the patterned noise and banding :( which is more than enough to move up.

Things I don't like about the GH2:
- Lowest IOS is 160 (GH1 has two below that - 100 and 125)
- When HDMI is connected for live monitor viewing, it gets in the way of the flip out few finder. Kinda only useful in a lockdown setup, not handheld. Plus, if in handheld, I'd be afraid of damaging the HDMI connection - the video flickers on and off if the connection is off center a tad.
- New battery - can't use my GH1 batteries.

I'm not going to on. It's just my immediate reaction to my GH2.

Hi everyone here,
I am a new GH2 user and my GH2 is only two weeks old. It seems that my Electronic Viewfinder is faulty. It is producing a reddish and a blueish hue. Tried to do setting on the Monitor/Viewfinder but to no avail. All settings are set to '0' for contrast, tint, color & brightness but still have the 'sickly' blue/red tint. Does anyone have this problem? It could be a setting/ software situation . Also resetted the system twice. The LCD screen and the pictures/videos are fine.

Thanks.

One gets easy trapped in slightly wrong terminology.
Follow focus does work in video mode.
What does not work is the AF-Tracking in the video mode.

Not quite.
GH1 ISDO was much higher that it should be.
ISO 100 GH1 = 137
ISO 200 GH1 = 269

ISO 160 GH2 = 167
ISO 200 GH2 = 209

GH1 beats Gh2 overall score.

Vitaliy, can you please explain a little about this subject?

i saw you wrote on the GH2 firmware improvement list: a 4:3 aspect for AVCHD.
is this possible at all?
i mean, if it wasn't possible on the GH13 mjpeg, how come it could be done on AVCHD GH2 ?
and if the GH2 get hacked, could this be done? (on AVCHD)
i am basically wondering why it wasn't possible on GH13 and it is possible with GH2.

thanks

Yawn. Y'know, I really don't care - we can't shoot "raw" video, and the GH2 has much more powerful processing than the GH1.

when you say 'we', are you referring to GH1 or GH2 community ? (I still don't know where we landed with the whole GH2 uncompressed thing)

We're seriously considering rebuying a GH1 to hack (or a hacked one) for the high bitrate 720p. Finding the stock 720 on the GH2 falls apart fairly quickly with a lot of motion. LOVE the GH2's 1080 though.

I have changed the [LVF DISP.STYLE] playing with [CUSTOM] menu (when in a Movie mode on a dial) and could not revert it back without resetting (lost all my settings). Seems to be a firmware bug...

I love this little camera, but i´m still a bit disappointed of my unit, because there is this yellowish area in the centre of the view finder. I don´t know anybody, who has the same problem, so I think, this is not a normal behaviour of the GH2.
At least the touch screen works fine, which is more important to me, in terms of film-making.

HI all
I'm new here, just got the GH2 but a WE0K pre prod series I believe. Beside asking about firmware upgrade (on another thread), I would like to know if someone can help me with understanding why Fn1 button has to be set on iA to be able to use the crop feature? Also when releasing the function to normal full frame, my setting switch to iA settings (automatic), which means that I loose my speed and aperture manual settings when I switch from 1:1 to 16:9.
Hope I'm making sense.
Thank you
