so it's not hackable....the same 2 options exist...USE it, because it's still awesome in "unhackable" mode....or, return it, and try again, maybe used. there's so much hope.

Chris Light is so right. The camera is awesome even in stock firmware. Really, I worry that this whole question of unlocking the secret power of the machine has distracted us from the power of a good set of lenses and some creative lighting. Yes, the camera is capable of more, but what it is capable of, now is still very impressive and worth experimenting with before we write it off.
I just shot some interviews in San Francisco last weekend with only a air of CFL's to light with and I was surprised how much better I like the image off of my unhacked GH1 than that of the HVX I used to shoot on, before.

I HAVE NO CONNECTION/RELATIONSHIP TO J&R or ANYONE WHO WORKS THERE--I'M MERELY DEDICATED TO THIS SITE AND THE WELL BEING OF THIS WONDERFUL COMMUNITY!
IF MODS HERE ARE NOT HAPPY W/ ME DIVULGING THIS INFO- I WILL REMOVE IMMEDIATELY- JUST WANT TO HELP OUR COMMUNITY HERE W/ SOME INSIDE INFO ON THE INFAMOUS HACKABLE BATCH GH1's....
ok here's the deal-- Yesterday (Friday 6th), I spoke with sales dudes from Adorama, B&H and J&R, the only company that successfully researched and answered my inquiries was J&R ( BTW- I've purchased from all three, and they've all been good to me--no bashing here just factual) . 'Kenny' at EXT. 1013 was extremely helpful, he went out of his way to get in touch with the warehouse manager to look into the batch of serial numbered GH1's they had in stock.
I explained to him about the 'born on date' encrypted into the serial number- and within a couple hours came back to me and said that they had approx 20 GH1's all with serial numbers that started with 'WE0A...' BINGO!!! Jan 2010- primo batch-- so get em' while their hot.
Coincidentally, I currently have a 'WE0AXXXXXXX' GH13 that is being repaired at a proshop in my area (shutter button assembly being replaced--possible damage from the beach-family vaca
)-- anyhow, my worries were that at some point they would have to reinstall firmware from panny which would obviously lock me out of the hack-WHICH I DON'T WANT-- so I decided to go on the hunt for yet another GH-1--whilst mine being repaired- and made a purchase--so I will probably be in the market to sell one soon-- the wife doesn't like too many GH1's lying around:huh:--
anyhow- hope this helps--also if you call J&R dial up Kenny @ ext.1013, only because he went way out of his way for me(us), and I kind of bugged him all day, to the point of agitation I'm sure...

Excellent news. I called just a few minutes ago and was told by the rep (not sure who it was) that he couldn't look up the serial number or firmware version, however he did show the stock arrived in their warehouse on June 28th.

will definitely keep you updated--
I was able to hand deliver cam-and coerced the receptionist (after being told repeatedly that I couldn't speak w/ a tech guy), to get someone who 'knows' the camera- to come out and speak with me.
Although he wasn't aware of the Tester13 'hack' he was right on my wavelength of what the deal was-and the importance of not allowing the technicians to mess with the firmware. He was very understanding of the entire scenario, i.e. limited GH1(3)'s, panny's new firmware, etc. After some techy-nerd bonding conversation- he assured me that he would actually hand deliver to techs and mark my work order with SPECIFIC guidlines and instructions as to what to do and NOT to do. And/if the point comes that they have to re-install firmware- that they would contact me first before moving forward.....
so--we'll see, hopefully just a simple replacement of the shutter button assembly--and home she comes ready to shoot more pristine GH13 imagery

Just talked to J and R and they confirmed the same info. Also looked at the website there's a new price drop:
GH1 is now $999
I definitely am trying to get my hands on a hackable one so went ahead and ordered one from both J & R and B & H. Hoping I'll get lucky by improving my odds.
If i wind up with 2 hackable GH1's will be looking to sell one, cameras arrive this friday so my fingers are crossed.

Yeah- I saw that too - made my purchase yesterday, but called back today and they happily adjusted the price for me-- woohoo saved a couple hundred bucks!!
The last one I got in the end of May/Begin of June was from B&H - it was a 'WE0A' -Jan 2010- lovely batch- I did comparison with my first GH-1(1st gen sensor - June of 09') all factory settings - there is a considerable difference for sure- less FPN/banding.
So that being said- If in fact J&R is shipping those 'WE0A's then we're getting a good cam for sure!:thumbsup:
If they do want to reinstall firmware do insist on having them save it to disk or flash, so you can reinstall it yourself
BTW, yours is a great example that customers should exercise their buying power when an occasion clearly calls for it. With some people reporting that sales staff at another NYC retailer don't have "any way of telling the warehouse to ship a GH1 with a serial number from a specific serial range)", it should be known there is another retailer that wants or cares about business enough to honor that request. Also, sometimes a little bit of "pushing" is required -- these are NYC retailers we are taking about
