GH1 and GF1 valid serial range

Well this confuses things a bit. Are we sure that those that are not able to hack their GH1 are just not doing it correctly? Just something you might want to look into in case it is just a missed step in the hack.
Nitsuj, we don't know; none of the posters with "unupgradeable" cameras posted youtube videos of them doing upgrades or sent in their camera to VK for inspection.

However, in marky's case GH1 has WE9L prefix which numerically is less than WEA0* (which I purchased in February from amazon.com). What that means to me is that cameras can spend quite some time sitting on the back shelves of some retail shops.

I wonder if any of the GH1's sold in the US are unhackable. It seems like most people that can't hack their GH1 are in Europe and Asia. Looks like people buying from retailers such as B&H in the US are able to hack theirs.

OK, I have a Brand New one from panasonic that I just got, this was backordered...so it has to be the newest one out there. I am planning on selling it though. It won't mess it up if it doesn't work , right?

GH1 serial WE0BDxxxxxx bought from France 20th June, 2010 (pixmania.com). Hack works. I would like to thank everyboby who made GH13 hack possible.

Correct, after loading modified firmware on SD card (make sure to check off "prevent version compare" to allow going back to factory firmware) pronounce the following chant You take the blue pill and the story ends before putting SD card into the cam and pushing Playback button.

I just hacked my new GH1.
Serial : FS0AD90XXXX (Japanese version)
Bought yesterday (28.07.10) in Taipei after having asked several shops for a "not so new" camera.
It was the last one in a shop, the seller told me it arrived in their company end of May 2010 (but he seemed not very sure). He agreed to turn on the cam (which is not always the case) which showed version 1.2.
Maybe there are still some other GH1 waiting to be hacked in the shops. There is a second-hand one on Yahoo auctions Taiwan which was bought in the US in June, serial starting with WE9. But it might be much more difficult to find GF1 here since the shopkeepers told me that this one sells a lot and very fast.

Mine was bought on Amazon (UK) on 6th of July. As far as I remember it displayed firmware version 1.3. I hacked it without problems. It is made in Xiamen, China.
S/N: WE0FD0010XX

Ok,
I just tried to hack my brand new one with WE0GD*****. will not hack. My older one does. Pretty sad. well gonna throw this up on eBay soon.

I suspect the "9" and "0" in WE9 and WE0 mean the year they were manufactured -- 2009 or 2010.

Look at this list, which is compiled from the previous posts:

WE9JB001184 - YES
We9kb00236 - YES
WE9LC001*** - YES
WE9SB001620 - YES
WE0AD00xxxx -YES
WE0BDxxxxxx - YES
WE0FD0010XX - YES
WE0FDxxxxxx - YES
WE0GD***** - NO

FV0BB102012 - YES
FV0FC001046 - YES
FV0FC1015XX - NO
FV0FC103350 - NO
FV0GC1020XX - NO

FS0AD001050 - YES
FS0AD001145, 1147 - YES
FS0AD90XXXX - YES

Here it's easy to see that the last digits aren't the only ones that matter.

If I were looking for a hackable camera, I wouldn't buy one with a SN that began later than WE0FD, or with FV0FC0.

Did the people with these serial numbers

WE0FD0010XX - YES
WE0FDxxxxxx - YES
WE0GD***** - NO

Check via the temp service menu whther they had 1.34 installed before they did the hack?

I will attempt the hack sometime soon and do it systematic to both my new and old cameras, so as to be sure its not the user at fault

Interesting... If there would be no "WE9SB001620", somebody would think that the letter after 9 or 0 means month:

A = January
B = February
C = March
D = April
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = August
I = September
J = October
K = November
L= December

But maybe that "S" means "Special edition" like Christmas edition? :)
Joke, of course.

Yes, both of my hackable Chinese GH1 cameras have serial numbers starting with WE9. One was bought in Nov 2009 and the other in Mar 2010.

Date of purchase does not always correspond to production date. Just curious... what are the characters after digit 9?

Received my GH1 yesterday. Ordered from the J&R $950 special they were running several days ago. Bought in US, live in US.

Firmware version 1.2. Hacked with no problem.

Serial is has WE0AD as the first five.

Loving the hacked camera!
