GH-1 GH-13 Fixed Pattern Noise: Breakthrough?

I don't see a difference in mine, but I'm using 24p. I'm wondering if the 24p patch removes some of the noise anyway.
It seems to access 3200 ISO no problem, so that is useful.

The main difference is the banishing of the FPN at intermediate and maximum ISO, the general noise also appears to be much finer/lighter. Plus it seems to enable 3200 ISO in video mode by switching to auto ISO when you hit the video record button (i have no actually proof of this other than it's all i can think of that will increase that much gain and make that much difference)

Yes, I think I understand, but my cam doesn't have much noise, I can't see a difference. It does seem to kick into 3200 because I need to click the aperture to match the 1600, but the 3200 or whatever it is is much noisier than the 1600.

Just imagine what a Voitlander .95 would be like if swapped out for the 20mm pancake. The camera may then select a slightly lower ISO and be very usable beyond 1600.

Good to see some more people taking this serious finally. Shall we call this the Emory/Rambo setting ... hahaha. I'm sure this was revealed way back early last year in one of the threads.

Still waiting for Mr Powell to have a crack at it. All you need is a GH13 with FPN.

ramboc: there is a setting that limits the max auto ISO in the menus.

emory: what is the point of creating CUSTOM settings? do you mainly do this for the aspect ratio difference when shooting stills vs video? i just shoot in S mode the whole time. if i want to take a 3:2 still, i just hit the down arrow (Fn) and select it. just wondering what the advantage is over using the other modes.

everyone: i've been shooting this way (in S mode) for some time now and have to say it is the fastest workflow. point the camera at the brightest part of your subject, lock exposure and focus, and roll camera. this is the first camera that allows me to work faster by actually using the auto features! of course i almost never leave the camera in auto while recording, i always lock off the settings.

Alright now I have to try this. I have the GH13. Man if this works I'm going to be amazed at how my GH1 just keeps growing new wings.

averan, play w/ custom settings. each setting can remember film mode settings and a lot more settings. very nice.

from my tests, this doesn't eliminate FPN. all it does it produce a brighter image than you otherwise could make in Creative Movie mode.

stonebat: i can see how the Custom settings could be useful for quickly switching between 1080_24p and 720_60p. i very rarely need to do that on my shoots, but its nice to have an easier option. i think i may set my camera up with C1 as 720_60p, but shoot most stuff in S at 1080_24p. i never change film modes or any other settings.

C3 - A priority, auto iso, (.), multiple metering, standard film mode, all film modes at 0's <== for photo
C2 - S priority, 1/30s, auto iso, spot metering, smooth film mode, all film modes at -2's, FHD <== for low light video.

To make auto iso go over 400, iso limit setting needs to be set.

By the way we need E mode. E mode is similar to M mode except auto iso is available. Aperture and shutter speed are manually set. E mode allows a user to select desired exposure level in numeric number. Also it displays the current exposure metering. It will select appropriate iso if possible. The iso limit option sets the max allowable iso. If the max iso can't meet the desired exposure setting, it should give some warning by flashing the desired exposure level number. This will help me tremendously.

Actually we don't need a new mode. Creative M mode could be modified to do that. Press a wheel to set aperture, then shutter speed, then exposure level ONLY IF auto-iso is selected.

interesting....so you like the extra contast of Standard film mode for stills. makes sense.

i was noticing the 400 ISO limit! weird. counterintuitive that you have to set a limit to get it to go higher than 400?

ISO limit does not seem to affect video. When set to 'Off', if you lock exposure it'll tell me ISO 400. When set to '1600', the same dark scene locks at ISO 1600. HOWEVER, the videos have identical exposure! The only place that this has an effect is for still photos. I just checked this myself.

I'm shooting in S mode here with ISO set to AUTO.

This makes me believe that the camera isn't being honest about the ISO, at least when shooting in S mode. What the heck?

Yes it's hard to judge what the camera is doing but the brighter image is also forcing higher bitrates.

However whatever is happening the results speak for themselves.
