GH-1 GH-13 Fixed Pattern Noise: Breakthrough?

I tried this out myself, but maybe I'm missing something -- is there a way to do a direct comparison against a manual mode? It seems that this method means auto ISO as well as no control over shutter speed?
I'm tried to figure out what situations I would use this in -- only very very low light?

When legacy lens is used, it seems the camera tries to use 100 ISO. Unless there's enough light, it would underexpose. So most likely you'd get the SS and ISO values in red color on the display. I guess the body tries to use the min SS at 30 and try to find an appropriate ISO value. If min SS at 30 and max ISO at 1600 can't meet the desired EV, it will just underexpose. Vice versa for overexposure. max SS at 4000 and min ISO at 100.

I've made numerous tests, and in low light situations I've always found it to be better than manual mode in regard to FPN, often far better.

Yes, it is auto ISO, which is a bit disconcerting at first, but using the EVF with the diopter adjusted properly, you can see the subtlest changes in FPN. No unpleasant surprises when you view it on a TV screen or PC monitor.

As I pointed out in my first posting, you can control shutter speeds down to 1/30. Below that, the camera appears to record movies at 1/30 even if the finder indicates, say, 1/2". I prefer 1/30 for FHD because movements appear smoother. For SH, it's not advisable to go below 1/50 because, as lpowell and others have pointed out, bitrates drop dramatically. So basically I would not use my settings with SH, just FHD.

While the setting is intended primarily to reduce FPN in low light situations, I've grown so accustomed to it that I now use it almost exclusively.

Hope this helps.

And I'm still hoping for some more feedback. Thanks.

WOW! It really works great with my GH1 no banding using Pmode and I like that I can lock the AEL. What a difference. Thanks

Ahha.... i'm thinking not many people are giving this a serious look. The more i play with this the better it gets.

One bonus that i hadn't realized, was that in FHD mode the bitrate is unusually high, in very low light shots. I'm talking 30mbps + for the lpowell 40Mbps reliable patch. That is almost the same as i get in full daylight. (btw i'm using the 20mm pancake)

Here's the kicker, i recon this high bitrate is what is helping clean up the FPN.

There is something happening here that is forcing the high bitrate.

lpowell, i think you need to take a look at this. I'm using the settings posted by the original poster.

This is screenshot taken off the video in media player with the snipping tool. It's an almost completely black room, my naked eye can barely make out the shape of the photo frame let alone the subject or color in the photo. Off to one side is a door slightly open and it is dark outside. The data rate of this clip is average 23Mbps. Honestly, my naked eye cannot see the contents of the photo. The zigzag of light under the table is from night light come under the bottom of vertical blinds.

If i had a 5D mk2 i would take a comparison shot but i don't.

This is bleeding awesome.

With the exact same shot taken in Creative movie mode, with manual everything and ISO set to Max (1600) i can't even see the picture frame at all.

The first shot is original
The second shot is with a 2x gain applied in Sony Vegas to reveal noise etc.
The third shot is with 2x Gamma applied
in Sony Vegas to reveal noise etc.

The little diagonal flare is from a tiny gap between one of the vertical blinds.

It's even better with my FD 50mm 1.4

Oh and it's not the shutter speed causing the result. I've estimated the shutter speed to be 25fps (in PAL mode) judging by the motion when i move the camera while shooting and comparing it to other 25fps footage. I'm sure that is the lowest the camera will default to in top dial M Mode when you press the MOVIE record button.

I also believe this mode is enabling ISO 3200 some how and this extra brightness/gain must be what is lifting the data rate.

It also looks like the NR works better in P mode at +2 as well. Plus I use the IR on high and get good results when I use the AEL to lock exposure and SS with a smooth film mode setting at -2,-2,0,+2. I also use a 24p 55Mbps 2 goop patch to raise the codec higher bit rates. The images are indeed FPN free, but you will get some added noise from the higher iso settings. Which still look really good in the lowest of light scenes. IMOP its much better sollution then what manual movie mode at 1600 could ever produce.

ok, so i gave it another try and... low and behold... i got almost fpn-free results:) i mean, i can see it crawling here and there but it's so much better than what i used to get using creative movie. the thing is i gotta use A mode, which works best when i want to lock the exposure. using manual and P gives me worse results. don't know why but there you go:) i think i'll start using it exclusively. thank you again mate! :]

FRAKIN SWEET!!!!! I haven't tried this yet, but I'm all over this. This is MY NUMBER ONE HATRED of the GH1!!!! If this fixes it, I will officially take it out of the penalty box. :) Can't wait to try it! Thanks for posting!!! lpowell where are you???? Join the party and bring your genius while you are at it!!!! :)

I am so pleased with the performance of this technique. Ability to film almost in the dark with fairly clean results is awesome. I tested with three lenses: Minolta 50mm F1.4, 20mm pancake, and the panny 14-45 which surprised me in reasonable results. Best results were the 50 and 20 of course... Al

Hello there!
I´ve been playing arround with those settings sugedted by you guys for second chance (first time wasn,t so good....) with some AMAZING RESULTS so THANKS ALOT fellows for this!!!
The noise in low light scenes, mainly in dark areas like shadows etc... is simply impressively clear and noise free!
The best resulst I,ve beengetting so far is with "S" mode.
I´ll post some video test soon.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR EFFORT!
Cheers...
Asier.
