First DSLR Wedding & 24p

how was it like keeping focus while on the merlin?

well all the shots used, actually majority of what was shot needed no focus keeping, its a wide lens (11-16/2.8) and the f/ stop was always as high as possible therefore everything was sharp. (small aperture)

That was great! From a film pov, it actually made shooting weddings look like fun! lol

thanks!! and really thats our goal. what really got me into this whole wedding business, is the pain of watching my family/friends/relatives wedding videos. so boring, so bad. it really did hurt sitting through hours of nothing fun. i personally think all wedding videos, especially traditional documentary-style ones, should be transformed into films and fun to watch where couples could actually share them with family and friends and not torture them, but enjoy :)

Did you combat the loss of light with a higher iso?

i guess, even though its wrong in theory, but for the merlin we brought up the iso when light was needed rather than stepping up. church indoor shots were @ 1250 ISO on merlin 7D while only 400 - 800 on t2i's.

I've been doing this for almost 10 years and I've never seen a better "first wedding video". Congrats and great work! If I have any issues with the video, it's the handheld stuff. A little too shaky but it's not up long enough to ruin the video or the flow. I wish my first wedding video was as accomplished. You have a very bright future in this industry!

Thank you!! that really means a lot to hear from a professional (I just visited your website and watched some videos = AWESOME!!) my problem was during the reception, i left the tripod and went out surfing handheld. what a mistake, i could've gotten the same shots but on a tripod, very stupid of me. but thanks very helpful tips in general from you and everyone, definitely will be implemented in my future shoots. got some more weddings coming up this summer, 2 this month actually. again thanks!!

aituv, great job. the editing is definitely awesome.

what did you use for the low light situation like at night? did you find the t2i did the it's job? settings?

thanks!! low light we used LED china lights as you could probably catch some glimpses of them here and there, but thats thanks to our photographer for photos benefited more, but even shots without the light, hands down these canon dslr's blew away any experience i had with sony z1u, or z5u out of the waters. 1080/24p, 1/50 shutter at all times, and obviously stepping up as much as possible. the merlin was the hardest since it has the 11-16 f/2.8 lens on it, but hence i was still impressed by the results. the 50mm f/1.8 was more than enough for any lighting conditions we shot at, 30mm f/1.4 was even better. i absolutely have nothing bad to say about shooting in low light conditions with DSLR''s. so to your answer your question, yes the t2i definitely did its job however lenses played a big role. also, with the 7D its VERY important to have ISO only set by increments, 160, 320, 640, 1250, etc because 1250 actually has A LOT LESS noise than anything in between from over 640-1250. so if 320 is not enough, gotta step up to 640, if thats not enough then jump to 1250.

Thanks, I should have more to come, I just have to find time to film!

Nice!! I really enjoyed watching the work you did with the 7D especially the 24p tests and the skating video shooting flat...nice job!!

Yeah, this puts my "first wedding video" garbage to shame 100X over.

Really nice work. I see a lot of these surfing the net, yours stands out.

EDIT: I don't shoot a ton of weddings, but when I do, I have been using an XHA1. Having played around a bit with my 550d at the reception, it PAINS ME to think about using the A1 going forward. The writing is on the walls, these DSLRs stomp the competition in low light situations.

I'm shooting one this weekend for a friend getting married. No pressure, just a chance to really play around with the camera. I wish I had one of those glidecams. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

well first off thank you!! regarding low light, yes no doubt the DSLRs stand tall there, but of course they lack lots of features in comparison to an actual video camera like the XHA1 - audio for example. XHA1's got the XLR and quality while the DSLR's lack both, however in general to me those "cons" that DSLRs have are nothing. we run audio completely separately therefore the video guys are only worrying about the image, while there is a dedicated person doing audio. while im still new to this whole DSLR world, im learning all i can to step in. like this wedding that we did for example, we shot everything in 24p - in post cant slow motion anything nor speedup, thats a problem. these cameras dont shoot 60p in 1080 resolution, and when a client wants a 1080p on blu-ray - im stuck with 24p. however im researching more of this whole 720p, shooting in 60 then slowing down or whatever, steadicam could benefit a lot in that especially in post, and i can already imagine what kind of crazy shots would be made possible. but thats virtually impossible if the finals ought to be 1080p on blu-ray. anyways thanks again!!

Excellent video and peace. I usually get bored watching such video but your's is very entertaining :) Congratulations, very well done. How did you realized the shot/edit at 2:54-3:00 ? :)

thanks!! the shot/edit at 2:54-3:00 was actually the steadicam guys' idea, he basically asked everyone to freeze and ran through with the merlin. it would look so much better if it was shot @ 60p / too bad we were stuck in 1080/24p
