XH-A1 TrueColor Preset from Paolo C.

Interesting preset, I'll have to give it a shot. But it seems like this one isn't designed for maximum dynamic range as it heavily crushes the black and lower the setup level.

Black, Knee, Gamma and Detail are four areas that you could tweak to your liking without messing with the color performance too much. There is likely room for a stop of so in tweaking, but from reading Paolo's site (HD100 and HD250 color tuning) he's been adding these in depending on the situation.

Cheers Dennis. Bit of work in getting this right so appreciate the link. Ive been looking for someone to do same on HPX.

I played with it and I noticed too that the blacks are heavily crushed.

Guys, I made a typo in one of the matrix settings...the preset is fixed, same link. I haven't had a chance to tweak the black levels using the DSC chart but if you check Paolo's site, he does discuss tweaks on the HD100 to tweak gamma and black a bit: http://paolociccone.com/hd100-calibration-3.html

I'd suggest reading all three parts of that post. Paolo prefers even distribution of luminance on the waveform monitor and this preset is tuned in that matter....you may wish to stretch the blacks in the preset and do some test shooting. If I get a chance, I'll suplement Paolo's post with the effects of those tweaks.

Cheers,
Dennis.

Thanks, Dennis. I'm looking forward to testing this preset when I get some free time. As I was tuning the preset I did notice that a lot of light was "saying good by".

i gave this preset a shot. Looks even further from the "film look" than the stock preset.

Interesting though, thanks!

Papa, it's not really designed for a film look per se. It's designed for color accuracy and range on captured footage to make CC work in post easier to deal with. If you're going for a particular look and don't plan on using CC later, this preset may not be the best choice. Paplo's site and the posts on colour tuning the HD100 are an excellent read on the process, and tweaks after the fact to get a bit more range from that particular preset. I'd look at this one as a starting point, and experiment with gamma, black, and sharpness a bit.

i understand completely, it's just from tests i have done, i find the closer i get to the image i want in camera, the cleaner the final result, leaving less processing in grading and not tweaking the already compressed footage as heavily.

But i could see it working very well for documentary! Very natural.

looks like im back due to reem's beautiful shot using this preset. Perhaps there is room for ridding this magenta cast and getting natural skin tones. Let's give it another shot.

I really think grading is a must these days. It just takes your footage to another level in terms of production value.
