Firmware update Comments

3) April 2nd there will be a major announcement that will be of interest to FS100 users, but it is not directly related to the FS100. He could not say anything else more about this so I have no clue what this means AT ALL.

Well, since this firmware is pushed back, let speculate on this...........Massive Sony lens mount refurbs? All the A mount glass now comes configured as an E Mount also? LOL
(So I just spent $800 on LA-EA2s and $1500 for A mount glass for nothin......Ha, the way my luck goes, probably true...)

And, unrelated to the firmware update:

mini slog :)! Im thinking of getting this camera ....hope they do the pal update to though.

I know you can't speak on this since you have no information, however should I be saving money...
or should I expect something amazing as a present from Sony I wonder.

Thanks for the work and follow up Rick.

On another side note "at or around" makes me less than happy. Hopefully Sony's April 2nd announcement for us
is something good...

I doubt there will be any new lenses, certainly not alpha modified amounts. (That's what the adapters are for anyway). There is a G level e mount zoom on the various roadmaps but the e mount market is much more skewed towards the stills side (as are the alpha lenses). There's an opportunity for someone like Samyang to do a cine style zoom for APS-C, i can't see Sony doing it as they have their pro offerings too.

I hope it's not a new FS model!

If it is 'of interest' to FS users, perhaps some kind of accessory, maybe an external recorder? or monitor?

The delay is a bit annoying, the LA-EA2 adapter support is pretty important. I do also have the LA-EA1 in the short term though, the EA2 works better though

cheers

Maybe they've produced an updated version or something similar to the FMU that is capable of 4:4:4 at 1080p 60fps and not live off expensive SSD drives... that would be fun. Then we wouldn't have to worry about wether to use this and that recorder.

Paul it's possibly however, they do have a current offering.
The Sony CLM-V55 and while it isn't exactly the best monitor out there, I suppose it accomplishes what it wants at the price range.

The camera takes 4:2:2 and outputs it in a 4:4:4 'wrapper'. So a 4:4:4 compatible anything is really overkill
and just flushing money. I wouldn't be surprised to see a FMU upgrade or a drastic price cut perhaps....

128gb SD cards are under $200...has it's drawbacks for some but that's a good offering in terms of bang
for buck. If you had two be prepared to shoot for over half a day, which for me is way more than a regular
production day. More than likely the second becomes a 'backup' at that point.

Definitely sounds like some kind of accessory offering...let's hope Sony shares what we think would possibly
be a huge item or deal for our FS100.

Maybe they will give all of us who spent $400.00 on the LA-E2 paper weight with a fancy mirror some kind of rebate. Maybe we should all ask? If not they should, because if I had known I was going to have to wait four months to be able to use the one I have I would not have bought it. The used LA-EA1 I got for a hundred bucks from B&H at least though noisy works to some degree. And though I like the 24 to 70 Sony Zeiss, it is sorta like owning a detuned Ferrari. Canon glass and a Metabones adapter add to my 20/20 hind sight.

+1

Although if it's any consolation the metabones + canon seems fraught with issues. I'm still fighting over a refund.

I hope the FS allows for micro adjustment though (like the NEX cameras). I also have a 1635Z to go with the 2470Z and that 1635 seems to need a slight adjustment when using on a NEX. The idea of the micro adjustment is that it gets remembered for each lens, this would be important to carry over onto the FS too.

cheers

That's weird timing, coming as it does on the LAST day of the National Assn of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas. If they're going to be demoing the upgrade - and you'd think they would - why not release it on the FIRST day of NAB? Strange!

Agreed, neither of those things interest me at the moment. I really have no clue what they possibly could be showing us.

Is announcing a release date and then extending it without notice a normal thing for Sony? I mean I would expect it from RED, but Sony? I for one didn't expect this. Kinda lame IMO. Hope this other announcement is neato though. Prob just more lenses though.

On the begining it should be "at the end of January 2012" .. :) than, it was changed to "March 22", now it's on "April 19" ... pity.. but (!!) If they IMPROVE autofocusing algorithm by way in my request - I'm more than happy to wait as much as needed!

I just shoot today, using my Kessler K-Pod on FlexTrack .. -->

and belive me: AUTOFOCUS in FS-100 is ALMOST USELESS in this situation! ....

HOW SONY CAN EVEN NAME IT "AUTOFOCUSING" ... when camera FOCUSED to BACKGROUND, instead to OBJECT at front of it ?? :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

I've got THIS camera to HAVE good, proper autofocus... and if I don't get it in this firmware upgrade - I will start thinking about OTHER CAMERA BRAND...

I wondering - WHY so many people bought this adapter and Sony lenses IN ADVANCE ?? .. instead to WAIT when Sony MAKE firmware with REAL IMPROVEMENT for autofocusing algorithm and LET THEM KNOW about how we all WAIT it WITH A LOT OF MONEY ??

Don't you think, that if we all do that, and Sony will know HOW MUCH MONEY we are READY to SPEND for this adapter and a lot of Sony A-lenses - they will think twice, before relise it !!! ?? :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

yon know.. I'm so angry about Sony.. when I talk to them about my suggestion of this firmware update, I was trying to explain to the guy -how IMPORTANT will be to have ASPECT RATIO GUIDELINES ALWAYS ON (!!!) on camera Display AND on External Monitor !!! .. EVEN when we puch the knob "DISPLAY" to OFF position !!! - to have all data invisible... and .. this so HARD to explain it ...

How I can tell them, that, AS AN ARTIST, when I shoot in aspect ratios different from 16:9, - I want to be ABLE to see clear space of my COMPOSITION.. like that:

Sony_FS100-LCD_Markers_8.jpg

....to be able to CREATE AN ART with it..

-------

NOT with all this "garbage" on display, like it's NOW:

Sony_FS100-LCD_Markers_3.jpg

.. but Sony guy told me: " -No, if "Display" is OFF - there will be NO ASPECT RATIO GUIDELINES on it " ... Oh, my God !! ..Why they are so dumb ?? :Drogar-Mad(DBG):

Serge,

How do you like that kpod set up as a makeshift dolly? Seems like a potential solution for me as I've been wracking my brain between an indie dolly (an absolute nightmare to set up and break down) and a slider type system which makes compromises on what I want to shoot.

Serge, good point and you prob do this anyway, but a good work around is just to tape of the monitor to the aspect you need with the frame line up and then kill display.

No.. this is not as good as I want it to be !!
Mainly even now, when we cange Aspect Ratio (4:3 ) camera DO NOT RECORD what is NOT in frame :

( "Exmor" Super35 CMOS Sensor / Gross pixels Approx. 3,530,000 pixels / Effective pixels of moving pictures in 16:9 Approx. 3,370,000 pixels / Effective pixels of moving pictures in 4:3 Approx. 2,530,000 pixels )

wich is much better as we do not need to COVER unnecessary parts with BLACK bands on top and bottom for 2:35, as I did in one of my music video:

This blank bands use resourses and we don't need them ..

so, better if Sony make all NEW ASPECT RATIOS ( wich Sony promice to give us in new firmware ) THE SAME WAY - When we choose it - camera will record ONLY what we want to be recorderd! This will even emprove rolling shutter issue in 2:35 aspect ratio - less way from top to buttom

Don't you think so ? :)

Oh,, FORGET indie dolly !!

This set with FlexTrack is much better IF you have even surface to use it!! It work perfect, a specially when you need to have CURVED way to shoot .... with enough time to set the FlexTrack in needed way - you will don't even need to PAN camera on K-Pod when you shoot - it will turn itself.. ! :)

and.. I planing to get Shuttle Pod also.. -->

...as soon as I make enough money for it ... :)
