Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 Just Released

Apple has just released FCP 5.1.2 via software update control panel.

As had been discussed in IBC coverage of the impending release of the update, the entire P2 workflow has undergone a major revision.

If anyone manages to get it installed and working before I have the chance, I'm certain that all FCP users would love to hear a first use report.

OK... just downloaded and installed on the Powerbook. Have not updated my G5 yet.

WOW! All new P2 capture interface. It is a log and capture window with a transport, jog and shuttle wheels and ability to mark in/out points just like in a tape l&c window (buttons or keyboard). Preview the clip and mark i/o. Drag into cue and it imports in background while you work on the next clip. AND AND AND... you have the same clip naming capabilities as in tape l&c. Apple did this right!

Now, it is still rewrapping in QuickTime rather than working native with the MXF files. That can still be a topic for discussion.

I am really anxious to hear reports from JVC and Canon users with its new 24p support.

I only have FCP 5.04 I didn't realise that 5.1 wasn't a free upgrade, how do i upgrade from my version to 5.1.2 i don't see it on the apple site ?
Or will the P2 update come to 5.04 users also ??
cheers-

does the new version of FCP rectify the Cinema Tools work-around relative to having to reverse telecine 1080/24pA clips. In other words, is there an Easy setting for it that removes advance pulldown CORRECTLY, so you don't have to reverse telecine in Cinema Tools? or is the update just interface efficiency related relative to P2 media?

Thank you Lord!, about time. This thing is better than P2 Log. At my first glance it appears to renames the files and covert them to QT. No more 000RGT.mov files. It also lets you cut the clip on the spot and delete the footage you don't need saving tons of drive space.

The Duel systems PCMCIA adapter for the Macbook is coming very soon (I may be Beta testing one in a week or two). With this upgrade and the adapter the workflow is going to fly through.

I believe this upgrade will make using a laptop the preferred workflow.

So can you import multiple folders? I have 25 P2 folders (100gigs) from ONE shoot, and it sucks to import each P2 folder.

FCP now supports every format from the HVX - no more reversing the telecine - yes there is an easy setup. Be sure to check out the release notes.

Early info.

thanks soarprod. i just downloaded it last night, and WOW, it's a major revision. great interface, and SO MUCH EASIER and efficient now that I can avoid batch reversing tons of clips in cinema tools to avoid clips red-lining in my time-line! YES!

I have some screen captures, but I have no idea how to attach photos to my posts. If anyone wants to PM me and fill me in, I'd really appreciate it.

You can cancle P2 imports while they are importing in case you change your mind before it's done. Won't leave a half-file on your drive, deletes it, but not from the P2 card or FS-100.

You can adjust the size of the info in both the list section and import que setion seperately.

You can chose to import audio and/or video. And which audio tracks you want, if any. And tracks 1 & 2, and tracks 3 & 4 can be stereo linked or not.

You can set in and out points to ingest, play back clips, right there, etc.

You can right there put in all the logging data you'd normally use with live capture: Reel, Name, Scene, Shot/Take, Angle, Log Note.

While in that window, I turned off my HVX, turned it back on into 1394 Device mode, and the P2 cards dissapeared and reappeared in the P2 Import window right away. No glitches, nothing. Very nice!

While it is importing, you can pause the import at any time, or just flat out cancel it!

The window is also scalable, so you can fill the screen! Not to mention the list of data you can display by right clicking the heading bar! Super nice!

There's a few more little tid bits, but basically, I don't have any need for P2 Log anymore. I know some folks will still want P2 Log, but this does everything I need.

Download this zip file for a set of 8 screen captures that show all the new features of the new P2 Import.

This is totally awesome! I "think" I'm actually seeing a somewhat faster import time, also!
