Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 Just Released

Are you sure, I seem to remember that it's missing the last three digits....Or is that Photoshop:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Wow I feel stupid... So i downloaded the update from FCS but now it says that 5.1 has to be in the application folder to update it, what does that mean? I feel like a real newby now!

I am sure of that, I have the programm on my desktop but I can't find it in my programm folder, is that maybe the problem. I just updated all the other programs that where on the Apple update of Final Cut Studio and that worked well, but Final Cut has to be in the application folder or something...

Yes, Final Cut _has to be_ in the Applications folder and named "Final Cut Pro", otherwise it won't upgrade it.

APPLICATIONS GO IN THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER!!!!!!!

You put apps directly on your Desktop? Are you mad? Are you MAD, I say?

Put Aliases of apps on your Desktop. Or better yet, use the DOCK!

Yeah, the app has to be where the system is expecting to find it!

Ok, go buy this book ASAP, please.
Apple Pro Training Series, Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System

You'll be VERY glad you did, trust me!

In fact, anyone who makes a living with FCP, or uses FCP more than twice a week, should have this book. Trust me, it's gold!

hmm ok, I am new to the macs and other people have put the programms on the comp so I didn't know that. I have two Apple Pro Training series books. So just to be sure. I drag the programms (because I think I have all the Final Cut Studio programms just in the desktop) in the programms folder and delete the pictures on the desktop?

Oh, no, don't even get me started...
PM me if you want some help.
Peace and Love,

Neils...

Sounds like you're working with people who are likely to get you into technical trouble down the road.

The way Apple sets up the Mac by default is probably the ideal way to work with it. Updates and other processes will look for necessary elements in specific locations and, if they're not there, you'll get a hangup.

Unfortunately you seem to have gotten into it after someone already misconfigured the system.

All the applications need to be in the application folder. My own habit is to keep the desktop clear of anything. Some people turn their desktops into storage vaults.

While it's arguably convenient the big problem is finding hard drive volumes when they mount: They'll place themselves in the most convenient open space and, if your desktop is cluttered, that open space can be anywhere. When I was the chief photographer at a newspaper I ended up providing tech support and occasionally I'd get questions such as "I can't get the server to connect," and so forth. Well, the server did connect but it was camoflaged by all the other junk on the desktop.

For easy access to your applications, use the dock feature. You can position the dock on the bottom or either side of the monitor window, and you can set it up so that it slides out of the way when it's not actively being used.

You can move files and documents at will, but anything having to do with the operating system or software should be left where they're installed.

For other documents, create folders. I have folders for files, video clips, downloads, letters, and so on.

It's often best to consider your workflow before moving anything around. Take a good look at how Apple has its default organization set up, then make changes only if necessary. By keeping things consistent your entire office will be better off in the event someone else has to jump onto a different Mac.

Thank you DCSensui, I made a copy of the all the Final Cut Studio programms from the desktop to the programme folder and deleted the ones on the desktop... I dragged the new files in de dock, so they are all the updated versions. Thanks a lot for the help guys. i didn't have problems with projects I did yet, but I feel better now that I maybe avoided future problems. Thanks again!

Just got my crossgrade wooohooo.
Anyhows was just woundering if I should install over my current 5.0.4 installation or not.
Anybody know whats the best plan of action ?

FYI, there's a fantastic "Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System" book I'd strongly recommend you get. You'll love it, trust me.

Here's some observations by a fellow FCP trainer about the 5.1.2 update:

1. The caps lock key. Before RT effects came to FCP, the key would trigger the "rendering is disabled" warning. But in FCP 4 and 5, if the key was on, the warning in the Viewer and Canvas usually didn't display- and it affected a lot of updating. If you rippled or rolled, no 2-up window would show in the Canvas. Lots of other update issues as well when the key was on. Now the warning comes up bright and bold every time the key is on- we know if its on or not. Nice.

2. Garbage mattes no longer "disappear". For example, if you applied a garbage matte, then a color correction filter, the matte would stop working. It would only re-appear if it was the last (bottom) filter down in the Viewer. The mattes now still work no matter what order the filters are in. Nice.

3. A mask feather filter would fail to show at all in the Canvas if the RT pop-up menu was set to Unlimited RT. You could only see the feather in the Viewer or after rendering (or switching to Safe RT). Now you see the feathering in Unlimited RT or Safe RT.

Some of the new effects are great. I like the new clouds generator a lot. And that Soft Focus filter rocks!

5.1.2 tip of the day:

To change between All Pixels and Select Pixels in the Video Scopes without having to dig into the RT pop up: In the Button list, call up "pixel". Drag one of the two "scope" buttons into Scopes window- doesn't seem to want to go into other windows. It creates a 3-button button with all 3 choices. All Pixels and Select Pixels can also be mapped to keys for quick toggling between the two views.

Don't know if anyone's noticed, but there are a TON of new filters (check out the Time folder), and several very cool new generators (look for clouds and membrane in the Generator's Render folder).

There's a lot more to this update than meets the eye!
