DIY IndieSlider...

Great info zaza, thanks for the thread. i have a stupid question though. How the hell do you order from those guys? I submitted something I thought was an order request and I got cad files. I see know where to order and when i search the part # nothing comes up. I was able to find the parts and make the 1000mm length but like I said just got an email with cad files. Any help would be great and Im sure Im just an idiot missing something very simple. Thanks in advance.

No worries... I found the parts I needed and called the order in.
Phone order number: 1-800-521-2747

Being in Long Island, this should only take a day to get to you! Call it in, it's the easiest way.

Yeah I couldn't figure out where the parts were on their site, I just followed the info on Zaza's first post. And got exactly what I needed.

BTW, Zaza!!!!

My slider worked excellent for the wedding!! And I looked so pro with that thing. I have a lot of equipment, including a homemade steadicam merlin type of contraption. But the bottom line of looking extremely pro was running my xh-a1 on the slider. I even booked another wedding before the reception started from someone that was impressed with my equipment! I have to thank you for this thread, and your commitment to it!

Thanks Kdawg! I'm here to help.

Glad to hear these success stories. I just happened to come across the parts and thought I'd build one of these to add movement to shots....once I used it for the first time, I was hooked...can't see shooting without it. It's a very flexible piece of gear.

Funny thing, I just won a slider as a door prize from QuestFest!

Slightly OT . I have two rails, a 4' and 2'. For what it's worth, I just located a nice On-Stage brand padded carry bag for taking the rails on location. When it arrives, I'll review it and post pics. But since I mention it... how are you all transporting your rails without scuffing them all up? Anyone try to check rails in on a flight ??

I was looking around at sports stores for bags that might protect, and fit the darn thing. The only thing I could come up with was maybe a bag for water skis... I almost bought a bag for a wakeboard for $50, cuz they were out of ski bags. But it just looked too wide and too much room in it. So I decided against it. I know they have bags on B&H photo that are 41" but they are expensive.... if there is a good solution I'd love to hear about it.

Mine fits in a baseball "bat bag"... check them out at the sports store. They have a zipper pocket on the bottom where the rail goes, the carriage and head fit in the top part of the bag as well as my smaller tripod for low and angled slides.

has anybody successfully ordered these Igus parts into Australia? The local distributor here has none in stock and is charging ripoff prices to get them in from interstate and germany.

Ordered my parts Monday morning, they were at my doorstep Wednesday afternoon when I got home from work. I tapped the middle hole on the rails, drilled a hole and tapped it on the carriage, all within about 15 minutes of getting it out. If you buy end-stop parts beforehand and/or plan a little you can literally have this thing done in a matter of minutes (just don't rush the tapping).
Zaza, I know you've heard this tons in the previous 70+ pages, but really what an amazing find you've got here (and to think I was days away from buying an Indieslider, bwahaha). It truly amazes me what resourceful people can get done with some time and effort. Best of luck to everyone in taking part in this invaluable DIY! :)

Hey I bought a baseball bat bag already, and its a few inches shy.... :( it also has the zipper on the bottom. I was thinking about cutting and sewing an extension to the bag... we'll see.

I'm confused... you tapped a 3/8"-16 thread hole in the carriage, but the head you're trying to put on it is a different size/thread? The head only needs to screw on a few turns (checkout the nub of a bolt that's on a tripod). Make sure a 3/8"-16 bolt screws into the head and make note of how many turns it will go in. It should be the right size as that ie the standard. Then, think about getting a shorter bolt that goes through the bottom of the carriage. You do have space under the carriage, mine sticks out a bit too (I think you can see it in the pictures in the first post).

An Update for any UK based DIY'ers. The problem I was having is that if you go and buy 3/8" bolts from a standard hardware shop, they will be M10 bolts which will not fit your tripod head. (they are a metric size and the thread is different). You need to specifically find 3/8" BSW (British Standard Whitworth) - 16 tpi bolts. I got mine from Stig Fastners.

Yeah... now that I added the end stops to my rail, it doesn't fit in mine anymore either. :(:(

So, now I'm thinking of getting a light/speaker stand bag...you know like Ultimate Support makes. I'll use the bat bag for the boom pole and other goodies.

Everything is here, including my Libec tripod head now. I devised a plan to make it all work...and then my brother-in-law came up with a better plan. I have to wash my car, so I guess this turns into a monday project. No worries...I don't have a camera yet anyway.
