C200: CFast compatability - Cards that support VPG-130

EgoDisk is supposed to announce price and availability on their new 512GB Elite CF2 card today, but seeing as it's already past 4pm in New York I guess we'll have to keep waiting.....

Ego Disk just made their announcement: 512GB on sale for $729 and then price goes up to $799 in 12 days.........ouch.

If it wasn't for the potential for filming long interviews in raw, there'd be no reason to not just by 2 of their 256gb cards for less money...... but it only takes one interview where you have to inconveniently stop to swap cards to make you wish you just paid the $729

Wish they had just priced it at $600.... sorta makes more sense to stick with the 256s

Hopefully this isn't a precursor to them raising prices on the 256GB model...

It looks like the new "Elite" models are slightly faster than their normal models. Not sure if the extra speed that you're paying for with the Elite is necessary for the C200 though. Kinda wish they had a "normal" model of the 512GB card.

Bummer for sure that I'd need to buy at least $1500 of cards to get through a day of interviews. The only saving grace is looking at how much the 256GB cards are by the bigger companies.

I'm sure you already have, but you might want to do some tests with MP4 for longer form interviews. Not sure you're going to see that big an improvement shooting RAW for something like interviews where you're not doing serious grading, right?

Mush cheaper media...

I can't believe I just spent almost $1,500 for 2 hours worth of recording time - LOL. But... would have been 2-3 times as much for other brands if they existed. Such is the price of RAW recording on a camcorder. I do wish they just came out with a 'standard, non-elite' version for less though... seems like they may be capitalizing on their newfound popularity... They can call it the 'proletariat' version of the card...

if you want a slightly cheaper card perhaps its best to wait for angelbird to be in stock?

i've been meaning to ask you guys who are currently shooting RAW on the C200, how's the highlight roll off when you are doing 12bit raw? also is it possible for you to test for overexposure? like say if its overexposed 2-3 stops over, can you still rescue the footage in raw? and what about underexposure? if its underexposed, how much noise is present if you bring it back to normal? Also after grading the raw file does it look cinematic to you in any way?

They replied to me today that their engineers are starting to work on a regular version of the 512 GB card, but I don't think it will be out for another six months or so.

Wow, that's disappointing, I was hoping to buy a few of the 512 GB EgoDisk cards and was hoping for $650.00. Can't say I blame them, they are still priced way under the competition, it's smart business. I have three of the 256 GB cards, guess I will just keep buying them. Maybe pick up one 512 mainly for interviews?

So what happens if you don't use a VPG-130 card?
Recording stops?
Recording won't start?
Can't format card?
Dropped frames?
Corrupt data?
I have several Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD and a 2TB SSD that I use in my BMPC. They shoot a terabyte an hour. No dropped frames.
If I test them using BMC's speed tester software they show 493MBS. If I run a Transcend CFX600 256 card I get 266. Which is more half the speed of the Samsung SSDs.
Since the C200 records raw at half the speed of my BMPC I'm wondering why the CFX600 card wouldn't work.
I had it with me at cinegear, but wasn't allowed to put in a camera and shoot with it since all the cameras were pre production.

Hey guys, just wanted to give you heads up. I got 2 of the New EgoDisk 512 Cfast cards and sometimes when booting up my C200 the cards fail to initialize. So basically I have to reboot the camera, and then they work fine. I've asked EgoDisk about this issue and their exact quote to me was: "Sorry to hear that , but we would like to inform you that it's C200 issue with any 512GB CFast 2.0 Cards". Not sure what to do now... They record fine but I wonder if it's really a Canon problem or if it's still them.

Ok, I'm in. Just bought two of them. Hopefully my C200 will arrive during the next 14 days so I can test the cards and return them if necessary.

I have been using them with my c200 for a month now... no issues! Its amazing to find "cheap" and reliable cfast cards. I use the G tech card reader per Ego Disk Recommendation.
