C200: CFast compatability - Cards that support VPG-130

I've been watching Cfast 2.0 cards this spring and summer and I have not noticed any downwards pressure on prices. In fact, the opposite. Anybody else noticed it?

well you are right sandisk and lexar did not drop their prices this year, and a month or so ago, sandisk had a 512GB card for $999, but its no longer listed which is a little odd!

my guess is that in a year's time, as bigger cards come out, the smaller card prices will drop...

UPDATE: I contacted Lexar via chat and spoke to one of their techs. Basically the 3500x cards are VPG-130, but the 3600x cards are not, despite having higher rated speeds and being certified for Arri. The tech couldn't explain why they don't have that designation and thinks they'll work anyway, but would not guarantee they would when pressed. Worth noting that Canon UK specifically does not have the 3600x card on their recommended card list; whether that's because they haven't tested them, or they cant sustain the speed you need for RAW is anyone's guess.

Right now I have one 256GB EgoDisk card and one Lexar 256GB 3500x card on order. Hopefully I'll have my camera within a week and will report back with tests.

hey fhammond, may i ask if the lexar CR1 cfast reader is able to transfer and read what you record on the egodisk? unless you are using a totally different card reader?

I was looking up some 1DC stuff, and saw that Shane Hurlbut said in an old article that he loved Hoodman's CF cards for the camera. Looks like they make CFast cards, too. I've contacted them to ask if they're VPG-130 or not. Will updat the list when I hear back.

I figure I'll throw this in here, since it relates to the CFast to an extent.

.... after assessing various discussions about memory chips at last week’s Flash Memory Summit conference in Santa Clara, California .... The overall takeaway from the event ... is that memory chips are taking over from microprocessors as the most important part in server computers ... about the continued shortage of NAND chips: the primary message from NAND Flash producers was each company's efforts toward increasing Gb/area of silicon ... in transitioning its 512Gb device from 64-layers to 96-layers the die size shrinks by 35%. Meanwhile, Samsung mentioned its plans for a 1Tb device in 2018 and the ability to stack up to 32 in a package. These packages can be used to build 128TB 2.5 inch SSDs or M.2 cards with 16TB. Despite these technology advances, the many hallway conversations were around the continued shortage of NAND Flash despite the increased CapEx spending. With the spending focused on increasing layers per wafer and not on wafer capacity, we expect that the NAND Flash shortage can continue well into 2018...

I edited this a little. Here's the page in full -

Has any of the new C200 owners tried contacting the accessory manufacturers about their potential CFast-to-SSD adapters?

Those cards have been out of stock since I knew they existed about a month ago, not sure if any Aussie retailers have them in stock but Angelbird's website has not had them to try out.
I wrote them and ask about VPG-130 since they are from Austria and close by. You can get them in Europe, but I can imagine they don't have much US distributors.
But I'm actually considering those Komputerbay cards now, Amazon has them where I live and I will test them once the C200 arrives.

Edit: Angelbird answered. They are not certified but their cards have a "Sustained Write Speed Up to 350 MB/s" which "should be enough for most needs".
From what I've read about the problems with CFast (high spec cards dropping frames), this unfortunately doesn't say much...

With the EgoDisk cards being the cheapest and seeming, so far, in my testing, to work fine, I see no reason to buy the Angelbird cards. They are smaller capacity for more money (256GB for the Egodisk versus 240GB for the Angelbird?) With the EgoDisk cards, I've recorded strings of small :30 to 3 minute clips until the card was full, a full 34 minute clip until the card was full. No dropped frames, underwrite/buffer warnings, no problems on ingest to Canon Raw Development. Not saying they are bulletproof yet but in small batch testing, so far, they are working perfectly, very impressed at the value equation. Can't wait for Egodisk to ship their 512GB cards soon.

I'm curious about record times, are you saying you got 34 minutes on a 256gb card? I do a lot of corporate interviews and just got my C200 yesterday so I'm trying to figure out how many Cfast cards I need to buy...The interviews range from 30 minutes to an hour and we run two cameras so I would assume 3 cards per camera just to be safe if I can only expect 30 minutes of record time on a 256....

Yes, it's 34 minutes for a 256 GB card. I just checked my camera with a freshly formatted CF card.

I concur, nice little 4 minute bonus over what we thought we would get. So 68 minutes per 512 GB card as soon as EgoDisk ships them. So far, pretty stoked about the EgoDisk cards, not a single glitch, dropped frame or issue with them. How about you fhammond, any issues yet? EgoDisk weren't BSing when they said the cards are VP-130. Thank goodness for choice and competition, I'd be bummed if I was invested deep in the $700.00 Sandisk cards.

No, no problems so far. They even gave me a 25% discount code after USPS had a delivery problem because of a damaged shipping label! I'm saving that for when they ship their 512 GB card.

I also had an issue where Amazon sent me a card that was used (had footage on it from an XC10 in Costa Rica). Since their offices are in NYC, they actually came to my house in Brooklyn and hand delivered me a new card. They even offered to wait for me to test it out. They've also answered every email I've sent to them within an hour (I never heard back from Hoodman at all). Now that's service...
