Canon EOS 1D Mark IV: It's here!

They shouldn't be disillusioned, they should be informed and aware. The 7D and GH1 are capable of greatness, and they're capable of suckritude, and at $1500-$1700, they're still better than they have any right to be.

Eh, now we're just splitting hairs over vocabulary. The 7D hype made most people think that it was better than it really is, and you just brought them back to reality. Hence, "disillusioned."

And after all, you did say that part of the image quality is illusion, i.e. "smoke and mirrors."

Jim will announce the next gen Reds on the 30th, and he said something about further delays- which could mean a month or two, or maybe more- I'm thinking March 2010- for the S35 Scarlet, which could very well be FF Scarlet now :)

Seeing that I'm on the other side of the globe, it will probably not be easy for me to get one of the first batches of cameras, which could take me further to about Summer 2010. By then, I'm sure we will have heard of a Canon Pro Video camera, a Panasonic sucessor and a Sony one. So there will be much more options to consider.

My guess for Scarlet is probably mid 2010. I used to sell ASICs, and it would be a miracle if Red had gotten it right on the first try, especially since this is their first one. The respin should take a couple of months. But then, I think they said they will release the Epic first. Maybe if they can't get the ASIC to work at full speed, they might release the Scarlet first. Just guessing. Of course everything subject to change.

I agree with you that we will see another round of releases from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Panasonic before we see Scarlet. It's amazing that no one has been able to beat Scarlet's target specs yet. Red just gained more credibility by doing nothing. And they might gain a lot of market share if they can actually deliver. It's a fun race to follow.

 So true...

But you have to remember that the big camera companies have seldom liked to make grandiose promises. They're ultra-conservative by nature, and this "conservative" (in the video department) 1D update just drives the point home.

While everybody's wrapped up in the news rush of the new 1D and upcoming announcements from Sony and RED, I just thought I should mention that a little bit of info. just slipped through the cracks that might be of some interest to 5D users.

...the 5DmkII will finally get a 24p update....

...that's right, Canon has acknowledged a 24p/25p update for the 5DmkII.

again, just so this doesn't slip by totally unnoticed...

the 5DmkII will be getting 24p/25p updates.

Congratulations to everybody who got involved to help bring this about.

oh, and the 1DmkIV is pretty cool too.

IMO this 1dmkIV looks like an incremental change

Personally Im only going above $2k for something designed for the job..

Black Box

The black box has a decent monitor, XLRs, headphone monitor, and a raw recorder, with no 'time limit'

Ergonomically the blackbox could stay on ones Rails and the DSLR could be removed for shooting stills

This is a nice addition to the canon for it's target market. For me? I'll stick to the 7D and just rent one of these if I need super duper low light.

Looks like a great rental to me, all of my lenses will work as well if not better on it than on my 7D.

A very cool new tool!

Initial thoughts... D3S beater.

Whilst the 5D (especially now it has 24p/25p confirmed for 2010) will be fine for my needs for another year yet, these new ultra sensitive HD-SLRS are incredibly exciting.

It'll open up night shoots never before possible. I am very excited, as you can probably tell :)

"Another reason not to put too much stock (or hope) into rumors..."

LOL....made me chuckle a bit....especially with the announcement that the 5d2 will get a F/W update. If I had a buck for everyone on this forum that was so sure that NO F/W was forthcoming... just in the last couple of weeks....
Unreal. These forums are great places to learn and shoot the sh... But take it all with a grain of salt. So many of those that I figured knew what they were talking about....

I guess I can just leave it at that;)

It is a VERY exciting time to be into BOTH still and motion photography/videography. To many cool and exciting features....and brand new ways of these MONSTER companies doing business (F/W updates with REAL features!!!!). To Cool!

i do both, and this camera is on my buy list, despite its costs. now that I am done for the season, there is a good chance ALL OF MY GEAR will be going up for sale as I transition to DSLRs for photo and video.

Wasn't this thing supposed to have Digic V processors?

Yup. I'm quite surprised that it has the same post-processing hardware as the 7d. I guess the spiffy new sensor is the big win for the intended audience , though. I think the 7d is the right price/performance combo for me, but it's great to see the trend towards more and more low-light flexibility.

Doesn't the 1D MKIV actually have less pixels than the 7D? It would make sense to use existing tech. It would also explain the better lowlight performance (larger chip, larger photosites....).
