dude this looked great. you did a good job. was that a real gun shooting blanks? how were you able to have the shells pop out of the chamber?

Just if you're interested, this site has a lot of diferent "film guns": www.modelguns.co.uk - They sell totally safe guns which fire (low noise), throw out shells and operates like the real thing. They have all from machineguns to shotguns. I have a glock model myself and it works great, and you don't need a permit for it since it is as harmful as a toy cracker gun.

It's still good practice to let the local police know that you're going to be using film-realistic guns in the neighborhood. Even though you might not need a permit, I've heard stories where they got shut down just because the police were annoyed that they hadn't been told about the presence of simulated weapons.

Yes, of course. If you wave around a black toy gun in a store, you will get into trouble. I know someone who filmed a store robbery in a closed shop, but they hadn't called the cops first to let them know. Some old lady saw the "robbery" from her window and called the cops, and the cops showed up armed and the director got a hefty fine.

Nathan, Great work man I must say (you really got your web compression down to an art). Which Carl Zeiss lenses were you you using exactly? There are soo many, I'd like to assume you are using Cine primes?

I was the DP on a short directed by Michael Fisher 2 weeks ago and just received the finished edit which I posted here.

http://www.urbanrhinovisual.com/presents/fisher/shell.html

We got a full set of Zeiss f mount primes donated and they were amazing, and so was the support from Redrock! Heading out the door now and will post more later. Just wanted to share!

Thanks Tim!

dante - as far as the lenses go... Zeiss makes f-mount primes fro SLRs. We got a set of these on loan from Zeiss and used them on my Redrock with the Nikon mount.

Check them out here

They are absolutely gorgeous, and fast - and resonably priced. We did alot of testing with the redrock, nikons and Zeiss. I'm working on doing a full right up of the results for my blog (as soon as I get some time!)

Nathan thanks, it's funny because I went to their site before I read your post. I just thought you had a higher grade. SO these lenses worked with your Nikon redrock mount? If that's the case then that's really good... Did you use any additional lights with that last production or was that just reflectors and natural sunlight?

Thanks Tim!

nathan,
i want to ask you if when you have used the Travato Jib you have used a remote FF.
if not what are your tips for using and controlling focus of a 35mm lens with a jib/crane??
best

holy cow, I kept waiting for Death to come out and challenge her to a game of chess!!! :)

The photography on this is very nice. Any chance of us getting a full res QT or something?

I was actually just asked a similar question on the redrock forums.

I have not used a remote FF on the travato, actually I haven't tested a remote FF with the HVX at all. Once redrock releases their remote FF though I'm sure that will change. The 6ft version of the Jimmy Jib has remote controls though, which are very nice.

I have used a long whip in some situations where the job moves are small. The Travato we were using is only 6ft, so if you have an assist on an apple box with an 18" whip it usually works ot okay (as long as the ac has a gentle touch!)

For the Jib moves on SHELL, I stopped down as much as I could to increase the DOF, and have things be a little more forgiving on exact marks. We also used wider lenses so that helped there as well. Normally, and whenever possible I would have someone pull focus - but when thats not possible I set for the closer end of the focus because the more forgiving part of the COC is beyond your focus mark.

COC = Circle of Confusion
is an optical spot caused by a cone of light rays from a lens not coming to a perfect focus when imaging a point source.

I think I may have technically used the term slightly improperly - I was meaning to say that with Depth of Field there is more beyond your focus mark that seems to be in focus than there is infront of that mark.

Great stuff Nathan thanks for sharing! Aside from the cinematography being killer,.. I love the location, with the wind in the grass, and the birds landing in the tree,.. lots of very fortunate shots mixed with tons of talent.

I've used that same Red Rock / Ziess set up, but it was in the middle of the night, and well below freezing so I didn't really enjoy that experience.

I really like your style. I also just did a WWII short on the HDX-900 and some flashbacks on HVX-200 with a ghetto 35mm lens kit. But since we live out west and collect WWII guns we shot real ammo like idiots.

Anyway great work! What are your plans for the short? I think it's a great festival piece, I'd be stoked to see it in a festival.

I'm not really sure what the plans for it are. I just shot the piece and it's been out of my hands completely since we wrapped 2 weeks ago. Im sure the director Michael Fisher, will do something with it.

Thanks, Shadow. Glad to hear you're digging the b&w. I fell in love with it and have done six shorts in a row b&w. Gearing up now for a short in color at the peak of foliage in Vermont. Can't wait to see HVX and M2 with the fall colors.

Best,

Michael Fisher
