Canon 4K/60p+ prototype

That's the ugliest freaking thing I've seen in a while. But I digress...

How far out do you think this would be? If I'm seeing this correctly, it's compatible with (at least) the L lenses. That would be amazing, as it would help people not have to reinvest in ANOTHER set, you know?

I think what we see here is a fixed-lens model, much like the original 2/3" Scarlet was intended to be. The lens in those photos does not look interchangeable, and though it "looks" like an L lens, all of this is just prototyping at the moment.

My guess would be 16-24 months to bring this to market, based on absolutely nothing. :D

Ha! I'll hold you to your word there, Stephen!

How many people do you think would be using the AF on that? Maybe I'm just different, but I only use MF even on cheap stuff. I can't imaging what that will cost, so it's not going to be for "everyone," but rather a more serious market.

That thing looks like a hair dryer. And a 2/3 sensor?

And what is this?

Looks like Canon just poked a big hole in the RED balloon.

Jannard had better come up with something more than 2/3" if he doesn't want to see a slow draining away of his Scarlet customers.

Kinda makes you wonder what they learn in Japan's design schools... Although I admit I'm really curious about the specs of that 4k cam's lens.

Seriously, this thing has to be a total prototype box and months away. There seems to be all of two buttons on the thing, and no inputs or outputs, no audio inputs, with a speaker or fan on the side. I'm guessing they took a hair dryer, ran a video cable into it, and put that monitor on top. Not that they won't release a camera with these specs, they will, but this thing just can't be it. It looks downright silly.

Do I see an autofocus button on that hair dryer?

This concept of a 4k camera inside of a fixed lens "Barbie goes to the movies" body design is just crazy.

Who needs this type of resolution in such a consumer offering? Is the megapixel myth spreading to video?

I seriously doubt that prototype will result in any form of a shipping product for at least 18 months, probably more. Canon is not known for moving quickly. How long have they known about the DSLR revolution that they helped create? How strongly have they addressed it? Not nearly as much as we need/want.

Scarlet is still alone, without any real competitors in the product pipeline published by all the major players. If it ships in 6 months, Jannard will do just fine.

Only problem is that six months. It's been delayed for what, two years? I'll believe it when I see it.

Other problem is even many of the folks on Scarletuser will admit the $2500 "brain" means a $8,000+ camera when fully rigged. So even if it makes the EOY release, and isn't beta, and isn't back ordered, it could essentially compete against the Panny AF100 and potentially the Sony cam with 35mm chip announced at NAB and due before NAB 2011 rumored to be in the $10-$15k range.

Meanwhile, DVInfo is reporting this camera is working, but not built as is for video production. Though the guts are applicable to future development.

Who cares how it looks

Who cares how it looks

Really, who cares if it looks like a hair dryer or a big a*s. If it can shoot 4k video, that is really exciting for me as a short film maker.

As I noted, that AF100 looks more like your dad's RCA Selectavision VHS camcorder than anything new and modern.

All true, until something ships from any vendor the rule is "take it with a grain of salt".

I'm not a rabid-Red-Maniac like so many redusers are, but to be fair, footage from a working prototype of Scarlet has been seen on Reduser.

Also, that Panny AF100 and Sony 35mm cam -ALSO- will need to be fully kitted out with accessories. So where a potential Scarlet body is $4.5k, and kitted out is double that. The Panny and Sony will also end up kitted out at 50%-100% of the cost of the body. Which puts them significantly higher cost than the Scarlet.

Sorry for hijaking the thread. moving on...
