C300: C70. When is this bad boy going to start shipping?

I might be pumping the brakes on this camera until they get this sorted. Smooth AF is a must for me.

If this is true, Canon is drunk on the cripple hammer. The mini xlr and hdmi placement is a bad enough design to warrant a future upgrade. I just don’t get Canon’s printer ink cartridge style business model in their cameras. They almost had me back.

At the end of the day, i am not an autofocus shooter, but it would feel a little too much like the Fuji firmware update issue.

*i did not watch the video

The thing is that it may not be a cripple hammer but, now that Canon is infamous for using the 900 lb one on R5, any screw up, any minor defect will always be interpreted as such. And this AF may not even be a defect, just a programming choice, easily adjusted with a firmware update.

Hopefully it gets adjusted.

The C70 has a lot of potential. I’m hoping for the best with that one. Hope it isn’t like the abandoned like the 1DC, or have to get to the third iteration to be good like the C300. Life is short.

Picked mine up tonight. Feels really nice handheld with the EF 35mm F2 IS. I picked up the 24-105 RF to go with it.

The CP menu has really been crippled. Did they simplify it a ton on the C300 Mkiii as well? The only gamut available when shooting in C-Log 2 is C.Gamut. I always liked BT.709... BT.709 is however, is still available when shooting in C-Log 3.

More concerning, C-Log 2 clips at 85 IRE at native 800 ISO. Seems strange... On the C300 Mk2, I am pretty sure it clips at 105 or 106. It goes beyond 100 from my recollection. Am I missing something here?

My brand new v90 300 mbps 128gb Sandisk is showing a "the memory card is not compatible with the camera." Not sure what that's about...

IIRC, it seemed like you were waiting and searching and hoping the III would be the one.

What happened? Why the quick jump to the C70?

As I recall, CRL on the C200 does the same thing. It was/is an odd workflow: expose with the waveform and if your highlights are hitting 100, you can still open up another stop and retain that highlight detail in your raw file even though they are clipped on the waveform. But push them any further than one stop, and you'll see on your NLE waveforms that the raw files clip (at around 85 IRE, I think).

I was kind of hoping that the C70 handled this differently, since the waveform should be representative of CLOG2 and not CLOG3 like on the C200.

The small and portable form factor really attracted me. I like the option for the speed booster and the RF mount also interests me. I may end up selling and buying a C300 Mkiii later in the year when shoots pick back up.

Interesting. Is there any official documentation of this from Canon? I noticed it looks similar in the tests done by cined with the C300 Mkiii. The highlights are clipping at around 85-90 IRE. Any C300 Mkiii users that can weigh in?

The skin tone and color look seen to have that normal balanced Canon look, definitely a nice starting point. I'm not sure why half of the examples on YouTube look either very orange or extremely dull. Seems like a workflow / LUT issue.

Just talked to Terry today and my C70 has finally shipped. I think it's going to be a great camera. Kind of the spiritual successor to the C100 in a lot of ways. It does bug me that the DPAF may actually be inferior to the C200's. Hopefully it's just because he was using Sigma lenses.

Funnily enough, Sigma's older 18-50mm f2.8 lens was my most-used lens when I was rocking the C100. The DPAF functioned almost as well on that camera as the Canon STM lenses did. But the same lens on the C200 was useless when it came to tracking focus; loud and choppy.

Just got my C70 last week. So far I’m really happy with it, nice run and gun camera especially after adding a Zacuto Gratical with it. One small issue, is that I can’t seem to put a lut on the hdmi output. Anyone else seen this? Not a big deal of course. Also, as far as autofocus goes, manual focus has worked fine for me for years, but this is really a useful tool, especially combined with manual focus. Time to get with the times and use it. Being able to jump to tracking a face is amazing. Wish the iris was quieter though and smoother on ef glass. RF is fine but EF (24-105) is noisy and steps when you change it.

I’m using the canon 24-105 f4 and hearing the iris change each click. I might visit a camera store and see if the same result happens on a canon 24-105 f4 II. It does not happen on my rf lenses or my 70-200 ef series I. Wish canon would eliminate the physical clicks on all these dials though, yes I know know we can send the rf lens in to have those done, which I’ll do sometime. For my run and gun work, which is mainly what I do, a 24-105 2.8 (using adapter) is about perfect range so I want to make it work if I can.

A lot of older EF lenses are just designed that way and there’s nothing you can do. They were never designed or intended for video work where smooth and silent aperture movement is a necessity.

Not only the iris but also the stabilizer is making noise. What’s the problem with that? You won’t use in the audio of the in camera anyway?

I wonder if Netflix is more to thank for better codecs in 4K cameras than anyone else? haha

Marketing swings the product line ... and Netflix is crushing the studios ... and most others presently.

All good for the buyer ... and not just i/o ... no time constraints ... decent 10 bit Codec ...

Still prefer the image from my 1DX Mk III ... should Canon CPS decide to repair or replace it.

I've been shooting a bit on the C70 over the weekend. The image on even the 1DX Mkii is better IMO.

The DGO sensor doesn't seem much cleaner. There's a plenty of noise and artifacts in the LOG modes and it clips way quicker and harder than the C300 Mkii. To top it off the color is way different than any Canon camera I have ever used. There are very limited color profiles and tweaks that can be done to the CPs. Color has never been an issue with any of my past canon cameras. I've shot on a ton of their cameras; t2i, 60d, 5d2, 5d3, C100ii, 1DX ii, C300ii. I don't get it.
