Black magic new camera @NAB?

There are a lot of ways for them to go. It seems like the bloom is off their rose, as major manufacturers have their own 4K cameras in roughly the same price range. So, they can go for the ergonomics but they can also go for specs - 6K and so on.

For them to keep selling anything, they need to beat the majors on the value and, with a slew of 4K cameras soon to be released, their answer is (probably) 6K.

Yeah, put it on your shoulder like the old days. Like when people put Arri BL's on their shoulder.

You mean the old days when cameraman were real cameraMAN? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
DP keiko nakahara look like a small stature person but she shot entire film with alexa handheld like a boss. But dudes here whine F5 is too heavy.

I preordered the BMCC the day it was announced. In my opinion it will give you the best image you can buy up until you run into Scarlet territory, and even then it gives that camera a run for its money in pure image quality. It's in the same league and only costs $2k. For the next camera, all they have to do is fill in the obvious gaps and not screw up the image.

-KEEP THE IMAGE THE SAME AS THE 2.5k BMCC
-keep the DR 13 stops or go higher
-better ergonomics
-active m43 mount
-better screen and possibly an EVF
-at least 48 fps
-faster sensor readout to minimize rolling shutter*
-custom picture profiles
-better light sensitivity (at least 6400 ISO clean)
-OLPF (removable is better)
-affordable media (read: not CFast. SSD is great.)
-waveform
-HDMI in addition to the SDI
-ability to record in log and send a picture profile out through sdi/hdmi

*I know a global shutter would be better, but if you look at the 4k cameras they took a serious hit in light sensitivity and a less serious, but noticeable hit to DR. For those reasons I'd rather just have a faster sensor readout to compensate. It's why I prefer the 2.5k to the 4k.

i like your thinking.

Heck, all I want from Blackmagic is a 4K Hyperdeck Shuttle that records in ProRes 4:2:2 HQ at Cinema 4K resolution to go with my GH4.

16k?. Call it "Special k".
How bout a lower cost URSA style cam with smaller screen? That thing is a sail.

Why not raw -- compressed Cinema DNG or, better yet, CineForm RAW -- as well?
Because the GH4 only outputs 4:2:2 10-bit at best from the HDMI port. Cinema DNG or Cineform RAW would be wasted on cameras that don't output in RAW. And most cameras don't output RAW, so why record to larger files than necessary?

I'm a hair from pulling the trigger on a BMCC, just waiting to see what nab brings. And if any new camera is announced that can match Blackmagic's image to price ratio, I expect it will only come from BM anyway.

Keep in mind that whatever they announce won't be shipping for some time, and you can expect the firmware to be lacking for the first 6 months you have it in hand (judging from all past BMD performance). The BMCC and the BMPCC are both great cams when you toss on a speedbooster. We have a 4k and a pocket, and I think the 4k has a much narrower scope of use. I'd seriously considered swapping the 4k for a BMCC.

True on the delayed release (though BM has been better with recent releases), and if I needed a cam now it may be an issue. I just shoot ob-docs, so a nice stabilised canon mount cam on smaller sensor is my cup of tea. Different strokes for different folks of course...

One thing I don't like are BM's tight lips...I'm only human and I like to be teased! :)

if only bm comes out with a 4k in a smaller form factor than the ursa with the same dynamic range as the bmcc, with the same price tag, I would be content for a while. the image of bmcc is timeless. I need the same image with an option of 4k.

I love BMC, but would rather find a metabones with a universal mount at NAB. Make it only three metabones, one for Pocket, one for 2.5 K MFT and One for APS-C sized imagers. Thing is though, it would have to be individual to popular camera mounts, and on this level EF, MFT and Sony E, also I think Black Magic could offer different RAW compressions, along with prores and that would completely seal the deal for me.

BM needs to capatilize on what they got working for them, which is the image. And now they should focus totally on making a shooters camera. The image quality is not their problem, usability and workflow is whats keeping them from becoming primetime. They should just sell out to the idea of making the most user friendly camera.

My Dream Ursa mini with bmcc sensor would have:

ND filterwheel
replaceable creative filter wheel (lowcon, soft fx, etc.)
XLR inputs
built in useable EVF (like the good ole days).
Perfect shoulder balance
SSD and CF 2.0 (record to CF, offload to SSD in cam)
High Framerate shooting

I would really love the ability to set a look quickly on set and be able to view it in on the camera, external monitors and external recorders. If they could add wifi to all the cameras then you could set a look by laptop or tablet with a lite version of resolve and send the look to all cameras. In a corporate and commercial enviorment the ability to set a look on set and hand it over to the editor with minimal color correction is priceless.
