Ask Sci-fest Voting And Viewing Questions Here

As there have been several problems in getting the films online, re-encoded, etc, etc... I wonder if it was a good idea to put the "individual threads" up already.

I haven't read most of them yet, as I don't want any comments/spoilers to influence my initial viewing of the films. However, I worry that the "buzz" created in the threads for films available will have tapered off before all the films are fully available in the proper encoding.

I know if I had entered and my film was one of the last uploaded I would be concerned that people would be sci-fi'd out before they got to mine and I wouldn't get a fair shake in terms of how many review/comment on the film.

I understand that at this point they probably can't be removed because of all the discussion that has occurred, but perhaps this is something to think about for future DVX-Fests. I would like to see the movies, and their individual response threads, only available after they are all confirmed good (even if we had to wait an extra week to see them . . . I know, I know... I was impatient too :) ).

Just my $0.01 9/10 ... like I said, I haven't read most of them yet, so maybe my concerns are unfounded and if I had read the posts I would know that...if that's the case then I'm sorry and you can disregard this :)

Peace,
Larry

I can see that concern, myself, and it does seem to give some advantage to those uploaded first, but I know I, anyway, plan on commenting on every film once I manage to see them all, and several others have expressed the same sentiment. And with the level of anticipation this weekend and earlier this week it seems like the masses might have revolted if they hadn't gotten to see and talk about a few of them.

Jarred said the absolute final stuff should be sorted out today/tomorrow, right? So that still leaves a good week for viewing and discussing. I think everyone'll get their shake, but no matter what, we're not all gonna be able to watch 57 films in the first 24 hours.

Ideally, everyone will watch/comment on all the films, but for those who haven't uploaded 'till today or later, it has GOT to be agonizing to see all the heat that a couple of films are getting, seamingly already wrapping up the contest before everything has had a chance to get posted.

Aside from being at least 24 hours behind others with regards to viewing/comments, seeing what looks like others have alread crossed the finish line/won, would be disconcerting, to say the least.

Yea, I guess my concern is primarily a fairness one. I realize we can't watch all 57 (or however many) films in the first 24 hours, but if they had all been available at once their would more than likely have been a fair distribution of views/reviews across ALL the films. Instead of a large concentration on the handful available and then some of those people getting sci-fi'd out with all the problems and requests to re-watch/re-review (I'm assuming this happened as, again, I haven't read the comments yet) and then dropping out after having only reviewed/scored those handful.

Guys, this isn't a race. There's plenty of time for people to watch all the films and you've got to think about how we're doing this. No one votes for a winner, the films get rated. So a weak film is going to have lower scores and a strong film is going to have high scores, regardless of when they're watched. I know as filmmakers, you're all (rightly) concerned that you get judged fairly, but I think we have a very robust system that's going to rank the films fairly.

I agree.

Far from it. For me some of the last ones I watched were the best. I've basically rated everything. Now, it's time to go back, watch them again, and refine my ratings further.

I'm a little concerned. I haven't been able to get through all the threads that might answer this because I have been watching and posting on the shorts I've downloaded, but it seems to me that I'm missing:
Eight Bits of Evil
Home Invasion
Mi, Robot
and I've got no sound on The Dream Cube.

Have they not been uploaded?

Barry, I've tried to download the 3rd, 4th and 5th zip files many times now. It always stops around 33 or 34%. I even tried the Mirror files.

Not Barry's fault.. dont get mad at him :) I did all the compression, posting, organizing and file pushing to the servers, so im to blame if something goes wrong :)

that said.. i just tested the DL and im at 45% already.. you sure your not running out of disk space to wherever your saving to?

I'll check it. I'm pretty stupid, so I wouldn't be surprised. :)

6 gigs sounds like a lot...certainly enough for the files, but if the drive is fragmented badly enough, it may not like it. (OSes treat sizes funny. There may be enough actual space available, but not enough blocks.)

Doubt that's it, though. You'd get a "not enough room" error message.

Slim, you on a Mac? I've had Safari give me that problem a lot lately. If you are on a Mac, use FireFox as a web browser - more stable.

Jack, there's at least one or two that are simply not in the individual section, and can only be found in the .zip folders.
